Luther League Update . . .
The Luther League is continuing to prepare for Youth Gathering this summer in Houston! We have been talking about all the different types of relationships we have within the Church. Focusing on love, we are thinking on how we as Christians can better spread GOD’s love to everyone we encounter. Along with this, we are looking at different denominations within the Christian church, and how we relate and differ from our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.
New Ministry Beginning . . . Bridget Lovejoy, Ministry Leader
I'm starting a new ministry and I need your help. I am collecting new and gently-used coats that will be distributed to all ages, this fall. There are people in Archbold who go without warm coats during our very cold winters and with your help, we can change that. As you're shopping and you find great deals or as you clean out your closet, please
consider donating to this new ministry. I need coats for all ages and in all sizes for babies, boys, girls, men and women. There is a table in the fellowship hall. Please put your donations there. Thank you for being a part of this new ministry! If you have questions, see Bridget Lovejoy.
From Pastor Paul . . . “…teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20 Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. As we move through the season of Lent this year, we are looking at covenants, specifically, we are looking at the covenants made by God with creation, nations, and individuals. And it is a covenant with individuals that I would like to focus on.
Jesus was on his own Lenten journey to Jerusalem; fighting the disciples trying to dissuade him from what he promised would happen: that he would be betrayed, suffer, be crucified, and on the third day rise. It would have been so easy to quit, so many times. But Jesus wouldn’t turn aside from God’s promise to redeem the world. And finally, the road ended in Jerusalem exactly as he had said: with his betrayal, suffering, and death on a cross.
But just as Lent isn’t the final word, death did not have the final word over Jesus, and he arose on Easter morning. Jesus, meeting the women at the tomb, told them to tell the apostles that he would meet them in Galilee. Jesus asked the disciples to come see him on a mountain-top in Galilee. They did, and he was there, just as he had promised. But Jesus wasn’t done. He commissions them to go out and make more disciples through baptism and teaching, and then he makes a lasting covenant with them and also with us. That he will be with us always. No matter what we face. No matter how dark our own journey – Lenten or otherwise. Jesus promises to be there through to the very end. If we, like the disciples, actually believe in Jesus’ promise, how much more vibrant would our witnessing to share God’s love with everyone be?! Knowing that Jesus is with us, no matter the road; how much more would we be willing to risk for the sake of responding to Christ’s great love for us?! What will our journey look like? Will we be like Peter before the journey to Jerusalem, worried and afraid what will happen? Or will we believe Jesus’ promise to be with us always, and be like Peter transformed by Christ’s resurrection love. Will we risk is all to share the love we have already received in Jesus? Christ is with you! Peace, Pastor Paul

Lent: Growing Light
This is one of those years when Lent refuses to share any part of March with another season. The Epiphany season has ended and we began our Lenten journey in February and all of March belongs to Lent. That is pretty good timing if one takes the origin of the word “Lent” seriously. The word “Lent” often stirs up images of self-denial and somberness; but the word itself has nothing to do with darkness or despair; it is about the lengthening of days. The origin of the word “Lent” comes from “lengthening” as in the lengthening of days that occurs in the spring of the year; especially around the time of the spring. As days marked by increasing sunshine move from Ash Wednesday toward Holy Week and Easter, there is a spiritual lengthening of days also. Lent, like spring, is a pilgrimage; not just one day following the next, but a path, a journey, taking us somewhere. In the natural world, the journey moves us toward planting, growing, and greening. In the spiritual world, we are moved to repentance, forgiveness, hope, joy, and new life. In cultures that lived closer to the soil and the natural world than most Americans do, the seasons of the church year and the cycle of life in creation could be seen in conversation with each other. Ancient believers were not hesitant to identify a church season by what was going on in the natural world around them. It was one of many ways that God’s people have been helped to think theologically by paying attention to God’s world. For singers of hymns and anthems this cooperation is not new territory. The church has always invited people to sing WITH all creation; and long before the church, the Psalms were doing the same. On the Third Sunday in Lent this year, the Psalm for the day is Psalm 19: “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky proclaims its maker’s handiwork. Although they have no words or language, and their voices are not heard, their sound has gone out into all the lands.” As the earth moves toward renewal of life, so does the human spirit this Lenten season. Those who sing know better than most how to welcome and observe such a season…let our songs grow along with the daylight to the glorious brightness of Christ’s resurrection! As we look towards Holy Week and Easter, make plans in your schedules now for your participation in each of these worship opportunities: Palm Sunday, March 25; Maundy Thursday, March 29; and Good Friday, March 30.

Sundays & Wednesdays in Lent Covenant and the Cross
Sunday worship will focus on the Old Testament readings in Lent. These readings take us on a journey through God’s plan to save us, from its beginnings in Genesis to the coming of Jesus. They focus on our covenant relationship with God: how it began, how it progressed, and how it led to our new covenant in Christ.
Wednesday worship will follow the Gospel readings of Lent. They stand in contrast but complement the Old Testament readings.

Women of St. Martin’s News . . . President, Kris Jemmott As women, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, we mourn with those in Florida at the loss of 17 precious teen-agers at Parkland High School. In light of that tragic event, I wondered what the church, and especially the Women of the ELCA would say to help us deal with an issue that seems to divide the nation. Below is information from the WELCA website with Biblical references for us to reflect on. “Did you know that every 30 minutes a child or teen dies or is injured from a gun? Take a look at our updated Rachel’s Day resource that offers information on how you can work within your community and congregation to combat gun violence.” “Rachel’s Day is observed by Women of the ELCA annually on the first Sunday in May, though it can be observed any time of the year. It is a time set aside to mourn the loss of our children and to renounce the forces of violence and fear.” Begin with God’s word “Many may be reluctant to observe Rachel’s Day because guns are a polarizing issue. Politics, personal views and societal attitudes make it so. Perhaps, Scripture can help you find common ground.” In Matthew 2:16–18, we see that children have been objects of violence for thousands of years. Read verse 18. Rachel’s actions can become the resolve we need to say, “Enough is enough.” Rachel refused to be comforted, and Scripture implies that her weeping went on for a long time. Yes, many may believe that gun violence is part of our culture, and we can do nothing about it. But Rachel was not deterred. Her actions bore witness to the urgency and gravity of the situation and the need to take action. Read Exodus 1:15–22, Jeremiah 31:15–17 and Mark 10:13–16. Pay attention to why and how the adults took violent actions while others (usually women and Jesus) found hope and solution.

Joy is prayer. Joy is strength. Joy is love. Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls. God loves a cheerful giver. One gives most who gives with joy. The best way to show our gratitude to God and people is to accept everything with joy. A joyful heart is the inevitable result of a heart burning with love. Never let anything so fill you with sorrow as to make you forget the joy of the Christ risen. —Mother Teresa

People, Places, Projects of local Outreach . . . by Cecily Rohrs
Your Grandma might have looked at people with limited funds and said, “Well they might be poor, but they don’t have to be dirty!” Sadly, Grandma was wrong. People living in poverty may have to be dirty because detergent is expensive and laundromats are even more expensive!
The 20+ member adult Sunday School class that meets regularly in the Fellowship Hall has created a plan to help meet the needs of families in poverty who need to use the laundromat. The new ministry will be called Laundry Buddies. It for sure won’t solve all the laundry problems, but it gives us a chance to share our resources and build relationships.
Pre-selected families from town will be handed an invitation to participate in the program which will begin on March 13th and continue as a ministry on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month from 4-7 at the laundromat on Stryker Street in Archbold. At the top of the invitation they will be handed it says, “God loves all people. He brings hope to all people. The Christians in this community are very sure of that. We want to pass that love and hope along by helping with your laundry expenses.”
Because it may cost anywhere from $12 - $20 a week for families to do their wash, other church groups were asked to participate. The response has been excellent. So a Sunday School Class, or an adult study group, or whatever, throughout the community has agreed to join the effort. On “their day” those partners will provide quarters for the washers and dryers and will have 2 adults at the laundry during the appointed times to chat, feed the machines the quarters and work at caring. No Bible thumping. No scripture verses to learn. It’s a community-wide effort to let our lights of faith shine to meet people where they are as Jesus did on the hillside and the fishing villages.
We’ll start by inviting 6 families per session, hoping to be able to serve 10 families per session when we get the kinks worked out. The Black Swamp Arts Council is even assisting in the program by providing activities there for the children starting in April.
It all happened because the Fellowship Hall class just completed a study of a book, Beyond Church Walls by ELCA pastor Rick Rouse. The laundry idea blossomed from within the class and hopefully even more needs can be considered in the future. When you support the spring and fall BBQ’s that the class sponsors, you’re helping us fund outreach mission efforts like the Laundry Buddies. House Mom Wanted: Do you know someone who is faith-based, very compassionate and full of common sense? We’re needing a live-in House Mom across the street at the Friendship House since Sandra, the interim “Mom” will be leaving at the end of the
month to move to Fayette in a home she just purchased and where she’ll make a home with her husband Alabama Bill who will join her very soon. The House Mom could work a first-shift job and still be a good candidate. Contact Cecily proto if you have an idea. Phone 419-267-5502 and leave a message or [email protected]

Our True Power Source . . .
The story is told of someone who plugged a power strip into itself and then couldn’t understand why the system wouldn’t turn on! We get a kick out of such tales, yet how often do we try to “power” our own lives? We frequently think we need to be the source of our own strength, joy, peace, energy and wisdom. Jesus doesn’t teach us to find life within ourselves — or in any human being or earthly circumstance, object or philosophy. Rather, calling himself the good shepherd, Jesus says, “I have come that [my sheep] may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). We don’t access that abundant life by “plugging into” ourselves. Instead, Jesus invites us to plug into his power — and joy, peace, hope, truth — through prayer and Scripture, worship and service, fellowship with other Christians and the beauty of God’s world.
“Faith is permitting ourselves to be seized by the things we do not see.” —Martin Luther
