Sunday Readings September 6, 2020 Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading 2 Rom 13:8–10 Brothers and sisters: Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not covet,” and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law.

READING 1 Ez 33:7–8

Thus says the LORD: You, son of man, I have appointed watchman for the house of Israel; when you hear me say anything, you shall warn them for me. If I tell the wicked, “O wicked one, you shall surely die,” and you do not speak out to dissuade the wicked from his way, the wicked shall die for his guilt, but I will hold you responsible for his death. But if you warn the wicked, trying to turn him from his way, and he refuses to turn from his way, he shall die for his guilt, but you shall save yourself.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 95:1–2, 6–7, 8–9

GOSPEL Mt 18:15–20

Jesus said to his disciples: “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that ‘every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If he refus-es to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to lis-ten even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and what-ever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

PRAYER

Dear Jesus, Help us to spread Your fragrance everywhere we go. Flood our souls with Your spirit and life. Penetrate and possess our whole being so utterly that our lives may only be a radiance of Yours. Shine through us, and be so in us that every soul we come in contact with may feel Your presence in our soul. Let them look up and see no longer us, but only Jesus. Stay with us and then we shall begin to shine as You shine, so to shine as to be a light to others. The light, O Jesus, will be all from You; none of it will be ours. It will be You, shining on others through us. Let us thus praise You in the way You love best — by shining on those around us. Let us preach You without preaching; not by words but by our example; by the catching force, the sympathetic influence of what we do, the evident fullness of the love our hearts bear to You. Amen.

A HIGHER STANDARD Our culture tempts us to think that any action is allowed as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else. Today’s readings show us how sadly narrow-minded that thinking is. They call us to a much higher standard, one that recognizes the majestic dignity of each human person. Ezekiel reminds us that the wicked acts of one person always affect the whole human community. Even if the sin is a private one, we are all responsible for shining light into the darkness. Matthew’s Gospel echoes this idea, providing practical tips for bringing healing and reconciliation to sinful or broken relationships. Today’s reading also show us the deep implica-tions of sin: a failure to love. Saint Paul urges us to avoid sin and obey the law. The best way to do this, he professes, is to love. Love leads us form mere coexistence to genuine companionship. THE WAY OF LOVE Although today’s reading might seem drearily preoccupied with sin, Saint Paul explains why sin is important to discuss: because every sin reduces the amount of love in the world. Paul turns the focus from sin to love when he writes, “Love is the fulfillment of the law” (Romans 13:10). What power that verse contains! If we begin each day by reciting that verse, we would be well on our way to a more generous life - not only avoiding sin as much as possible, but also actively seeking out ways to make life sweeter for our neigh-bors. Memorized verses inspire us when we face difficulties during the day, when we are irritated with someone, for example, or we need to make a decision. Remembering that “love is the fulfilment of the law” might truly help us avoid sin and do good in daily life. THE WAY OF PRAYER Learning a scripture verse by heart is, of course, a way of praying. In today’s Gospel, Jesus encourages us to pray. Jesus firmly believes in the power of prayer, going so far as to guarantee results: “I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father.” Jesus promises something else, too, something vitally important. More than a game of Go Fish in which we hope we “got what we asked for,” prayer is a living encounter with Jesus himself: “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Today’s readings move us beyond the bare minimum and open an enormous world to us. We shun the pettiness of sin not because we fear punishment, but because we want to love others deeply. We pray to our great God not because we want to get favors from a divine vending machine, but because we want to spend time with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

LA CRUZ DE JESÚS La percepción de una cruz cambió dramáticamente

después de la crucifixión de Jesús. Antes de ese suceso, la muerte en una cruz no era tan solo horrible, sino que era degradante. Era un castigo reservado únicamente

para los más horrendos criminales. La palabra “gloria” no habría hallado su lugar en una oración que contuviera la palabra “cruz”. Mas todo esto cambió con Jesús. Con el pasar del tiempo, los creyentes comenzaron a venerar y

a honrar la Cruz. La pintaron, esculpieron, y tallaron imágenes de la misma. Muchos perdieron su vida por

asociarse con ella. Hoy nuestra reverencia y relación con la cruz poco recuerda el desprecio al que originalmente estuvo asociada. Con el curso de los años, es nuestra

percepción de la Cruz la que determina cómo seguimos a Jesús.
