PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 20, 2018
In John's Gospel, Jesus came into the midst of the disciples. They were trembling with fear and in hiding because having seen what happened to Jesus, they thought the same might happen to them. Jesus said, “Peace be with you” and he brought peace to them. In addition, though, He also offered them forgiveness because they had failed him so dramatically. They betrayed him, denied him, and ran away and hid. But then, He gave them the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit entered them, they were changed. Just like the disciples, the spirit will also enter into our hearts in a powerful way and transform and change us. We must try to open ourselves to hear the word of God and to be empowered by the Holy Spirit.
In the Gospel, John also shows us a meaning of Pentecost that we might let slip by if we don't listen carefully. John says that Jesus breathed on the disciples. There is only one other time in the scriptures where God breathed upon something. It's the story of creation. God breathed upon Adam and Adam became a living being. The Spirit gives life, but now not just physical life but spiritual life. That is what happens through the gift of the Spirit at Pentecost. It is a tremendous feast in our church, and it should be a very important feast in the life of each one of us, a time when we renew our commitment to being filled with the Spirit of Jesus, becoming the community of Jesus' disciples, and helping to make the whole human family one family through Jesus.
This is the challenge then, presented to all of us: To open ourselves to the Holy Spirit in this great feast of Pentecost. Let us pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon all of us so that we really can be open to the spirit of Jesus, and that we can accept His call to carry out His mission, "As God sends me so I send you." Each of us are called to go out into the world and change everything by carrying on His work." We do this by choosing to follow Jesus as faithfully as we can in the midst of a world that so often tries to take us away from the way of Jesus.
Deacon Dan

Diacono Dan
