Food Pantry News

Our shelves are starting to look bare. If everyone coming to Mass each week could bring ONE can or box of food it would make such a difference for the needy of our community. Just ONE can or box dropped off in the baskets at the entrances to the Church or brought right to the Food Pantry. Thank you!

NEW SCHEDULE FOR VIGIL MASS

As I shared with the congregation gathered for the Mass of Anticipation on Saturday, June 3rd for the Solemnity of Pentecost, I decided to change the scheduled Mass time for the Vigil Mass and return it to 4:00 pm. The reason, although simple, requires some explanation and liturgical instruction. I hope you will take the time to read.

The main reason for the change to a later time in the first place was simply due to an attempt to restore the Mass of Anticipation to a later time of day that is more proper for the celebration for a Vigil. It should be noted that the Church does not allow a Vigil Mass on Easter Saturday before sunset, which typically falls after 7:30pm DST. And the Mass at Midnight was always celebrated as the first Mass of Christmas.

As part of the many reforms of the Second Vatican Council, the Church gave permission for Mass to be celebrated at night that was formally celebrated only in the morning. The real problem over the years to this present day however, is what time actually constitutes night or evening? In the Diocese of Rome, for instance, the Vigil Mass is offered at 5 pm since this time can more easily be conceived as a time of twilight or more closely aligned to evening. It is also typically the earliest hour when Vespers (Evening Prayer) of the Church is prayed, although this too has sadly become more subjective and relative. Thus my desire was to restore the proper liturgical dignity to the Vigil Mass and eventually move-it back to 5 pm in keeping with the Diocese of Rome. However, over the years a pattern soon developed whereby many people would leave Church immediately upon receiving Holy Communion. This became more apparent at the Vigil Mass and especially during season, when as many as a quarter to a third of the Church would walk-out of Mass, Jesus barely consumed. Evidently, my efforts to quell this irreverent practice, from articles in the bulletin to imploring time and again from the pulpit, have been unsuccessful.

And so, after much reflection, I decided it is more important to keep souls in the pews than to schedule a Vigil Mass time that is more in keeping with Tradition (at least for now). As I noted 3 weeks ago on the Vigil of Pentecost, the earlier time should allow those who like to frequent local establishments on Saturday evening to arrive in plenty of time for “early bird” menus and before the typical long-line develops. But I also asked, and I hereby ask again, that those who attend the Vigil Mass will return to your pew and offer your Thanksgiving to God upon receiving Jesus in Holy Communion and not leave Church until the Priest/Celebrant has recessed to the vestibule. Spend these precious few minutes while Jesus remains “under your roof” to thank Our Dear Lord for His Love and Mercy and for His faithful promise “to be with us always.” Many graces are indeed received at this very intimate and personal time with Our Triune God. PLEASE do not waste it!

Sincerely in Jesus and Mary! Fr. James
