Please keep the Abdallah and Sakr Families in your thoughts and prayers during this
incredibly sad and difficult time after Antony, Angelina, Sienna and Veronique were
tragically killed in Oatlands last weekend.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord; and let light perpetual shine upon them. May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Monday Morning Prayer Group will commence on 10th February St Martha’s Community Prayer Mornings – Did you know that people are praying for you? Yes- every
Monday morning 10:30 am to 11:30 am (during school terms, not the holidays) a group of your fellow
parishioners gather at St. Martha’s Church to pray for our community and the special needs of the people in our
world.
The prayer group time includes:
The morning prayer of the Church
(Including the hymns and psalms of the Diving Office played on CD)
Time for prayerful intercession
Time for quiet reflection in front of the Blessed Sacrament
Time for reflection on the following Sunday’s gospel
Why don’t you come along and pray with us? For those who cannot attend there will be
a book of special intentions (at the back of the church). The book will be placed on our
prayer table each week so these private intentions can be offered up at this time.
What do we do when the Prayer Intention books are filled?
(Remembering prayers to God are never forgotten or wasted)
We burn completed books and the ashes of those prayers are placed in the garden surrounding the Church.

Background on the Gospel Reading (Loyola Press)
5th Sunday in Ordinary Time Following upon the teaching of the Beatitudes, Jesus uses the now familiar metaphors of salt and light to describe the life of discipleship. We take salt and light for granted in our society, but these commodities were more precious in ancient cultures. Just as now, salt was used in Jesus’ time for flavouring, as a preservative, and as a healing agent. Similarly, the widespread use of electricity in the modern world makes us less aware of the value and importance of light in our lives. Still, our familiarity with this passage from Matthew’s Gospel speaks well to the abiding power of the imagery that Jesus presented. Jesus’ call to be salt for the earth and light for the world powerfully states our mission as
Church and as Christians. Our commitment to social justice flows from the exhortation that Jesus gives us in today’s Gospel. Some of the activities that this commitment leads us to are given more concrete expression as the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. When we feed the hungry, clothe the naked, console those who mourn, and so on, we show ourselves to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. When we do these things with the community of faith, the Church, we are indeed acting as “a city set on a mountain” that cannot be hidden!

The emotional, physical and spiritual safety, well-being and dignity of children is an integral part of the teachings and values
of the Catholic Church. The Archdiocese is wholly committed to ensuring the safety, well-being and dignity of all children,
and we acknowledge that we have a moral and spiritual responsibility to create a safe and nurturing environment for children
within our parish community.
We have a dedicated team of people who visit the sick and vulnerable in the nursing
homes within ort parish to offer spiritual support, comfort, Holy Communion or just a
chat. One of our regular ladies is taking 2020 to look after her grandchild. We would
welcome someone who would like to join our team and visit the residents in one of our
local nursing homes. The day for ministry is Wednesday after 9.10am Mass. The usual working with children
compliance applies. Please contact Helen Williamson 0408 970 120 if you would like more information.

Visit Of The Relics Of St Therese Of Lisieux and Her Parents The National Pilgrimage of the Relics of Saints Thérèse, and her parents, Louis and
Zélie, will visit the Archdiocese of Sydney in February and March. The Church Noticeboard has the full itinerary so that parishioners are aware of where and when they can take this opportunity to venerate the relics of one of the Catholic
Church’s most popular saints and her parents who helped nurture her faith.
The relics of “The Little Flower”- St. Therese of Lisieux – are coming to Australia.
The Church requested to hear any story of how St. Therese helped you in your life.
Cathy Milgate forwarded the statement below to the Catholic Weekly,
who printed it in full in the 19th
January 2020 edition in the “Editorial & Letters” section on page 17.
