AFTERWORD….Fr. Dave Howell

CHANGES... The pandemic has brought about many changes to the way we live our lives. We refrain from touching one another, we distance ourselves from others and we live in isolation. All these changes I truly hope will end in the near future. But there are some changes that have occurred as a result of this pandemic that I hope will become a permanent part of the way we think and act. It is amazing that as a society that is enthralled with celebrities and stars, we now recognized the great work done by those in health care and those who support their efforts. Nurses, doctors, physician assistants, aides & technicians, housekeepers and hospital workers have become heroes. Grocery clerks and those who restock the market’s shelves receive our deep gratitude. Those who deliver to those who are isolated, the bus driver, those who pick up the trash and those who are part of our service economy are now recognized for the important work they do for so many. People who were often overlooked or ignored are now seen as crucial parts of our society. Parents struggling to do home schooling have a greater respect for those who teach and guide our children. There is a greater appreciation for those who make our schools clean and safe, who fix the lunches (and sometimes breakfasts) for our young people and the many people who assist, volunteer and coach our youth. All these and many more have become people, who we often overlooked, and now are folks that are essential to our communities. I remember after 9\11 there was a fundamental shift in the way we saw the men and women who are first responders. There was a greater recognition of their service and sacrifice and a deeper appreciation for all that they do. I truly hope and pray that when things “get back to normal”, the new respect we have for those people listed above and all those who serve others will remain a fixture of our society. A GOOD REASON TO ISOLATE ...Wearing a mask is uncomfortable and isolating ourselves can create loneliness. It is difficult to keep distant from those we love who don’t live with us. But a small article in last Sunday’s newspaper helped me to appreciate the reasons for all the measures we are asked to take to protect ourselves and others. The entire crew of over 5,500 of the USS Theodore Roosevelt has been tested for the coronavirus. Over 850 tested positive for Covid 19. Of those who tested positive, 60% had shown no symptoms of the virus! It made it obvious to me that I\we need to take all those uncomfortable precautions not necessarily for our own sake, but to protect others.

Ron’s Thoughts…

From the beginning of time GOD has continually tried to call people together to share in his life. GOD has tried to communicate in simple ways that HE IS ALWAYS HERE to draw upon for strength and guidance if we just let him into our lives. Through Abraham, he called people to be his own. Through Moses, he freed them and formed them into a nation of their own. Through David, he brought leadership and stability. And finally through Jesus, GOD humbled himself and became one of us so that we could come to know GOD as OUR FATHER. Psalm 100 tells us, “We are GOD’S PEOPLE, the flock of the Lord.” But, like sheep, we can wander off in our own direction and find ourselves in difficult times. John 10:1-10 gives us the story of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. One who will lead us where we need to go if we just put our trust in him. There will be times when we struggle and will be led astray, but Jesus, like a good shepherd, will always bring us back. Our challenge today is about trust in GOD. It is not always easy because we want to have all the control in our own hands. It isn’t like he is telling us to throw our hands off the steering wheel and to close our eyes. We still have to do our part and trust that as we look forward we will see that he is leading us where we need to go. GOD is calling you, me and all of us to share in his life, are you ready? Our Easter journey continues … Walk the talk. Be Peace! Hope in a box The May need for Catholic Charities’ Hope in a box is bar and hand soap. You may place these items in the containers in the foyer of the church. Thank you for contributing to help the marginalized of our community. Family Promise Mission Team Family Promise Mission Team would like to send a big Thank You to all who donated to the Family Promise COVID19 fund. Donations from St. Mark and GUMC came to $900.00! This covered, above and beyond, the cost of the hotel the 2 families are staying in, plus the transportation and wage costs of those cooking and the cost of taking meals to the families. IN NEED OF A SHEPHERD For a while it was very fashionable to own pigs as pets. The publicity surrounding these creatures informed us that they were—contrary to their popular image—very clean animals, and also quite smart. Sad to say, sheep will most likely never enjoy this sort of domestic vogue. They are neither clean nor smart and are largely defenseless when left on their own, even in large numbers. The biblical image of us as the flock of sheep is not a particularly flattering one. Sheep without a shepherd are truly sad, because they most likely will perish either from their inability to fend for themselves or from their lack of defenses against predators. Placing ourselves in the heart of this unflattering image can reinforce our faith. Until we come to a profound realization of how much we need a shepherd, we cannot appreciate how deeply blessed we are to have been given a Shepherd, one who laid down his life for us and was raised to life eternal in the Spirit, so he might guide us and we might follow him in faith forever.
