I n St. Luke’s account of Jesus’s crucifixion in today’s gospel, amidst the cacophony of the rulers’ and

soldiers’ sneers and jeers, one still, quiet voice fascinates us: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” (Luke 23:42) It’s a remarkable confession. Somehow, this good thief (called Dismas by tradition), despite the throes of suffocation that the crucified suffers, understands that Jesus is his king. If Our Lord was merely a claimant to an earthly throne, the thief’s words would be as preposterous as the cry of the other criminal who called on Jesus to “save yourself and us!” Having emptied himself, becoming obedient to death on a cross (Philippians 2:6-11), Jesus became the most insignificant man on earth; he was not coming down from the cross. As he told Pilate, however, his kingdom does not belong to this world (John 18:36).

The good thief’s plea was a moment of grace in a graceless world, an extraordinary moment of clarity. When Jesus told him he’d be with him in paradise that day, he must have had the kind of courage and peace that the martyrs have when they give perfect witness to the Resurrection. Catholics believe our Mass conveys to us the very same sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Neither memory or symbol, the Mass is our moment of presence before the victim who was nailed to “a tree.” Having died once for all time, He offers us the communion of prayer and sacrament that the good thief enjoyed when he met Jesus at the cross. Amidst the cacophony of the world, we also confess (from today’s Collect prayer for the celebration of Christ the King) that He who set the whole creation free from the slavery of sin and death, is worthy of service to his majesty and ceaseless praise. Remember me, Lord, when you come into your kingdom!

Our study, led by Deacon Joe, will begin on Tuesday, November 26 at 7 pm in the old school building. The four sessions of the study will be held: November 26, and December 3, 10, and 17, 7-8:30 pm.
