A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
+ Pax et Bonum!
Hello! Welcome to St. Maria Goretti as we gather together as a Parish Family to celebrate the Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time! I give thanks and praise to God for each one of you this day! And we most especially welcome all of our guests and visitors who join us to pray today at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. We invite everyone to full, active, and conscious participation in Mass this day!
This weekend we pray for the Men of Christ Renews His Parish Teams 30 & 31, who are on the Christ Renews His Parish weekend. With thanks to God and thanks to those who stepped up and signed up, we are able to have guys to have the weekend yesterday and today. I am extraordinarily grateful to those who signed up this past week. Today, may all of us keep these men in our prayers and in our hearts. The guys from the weekend will be joining us at 10 am Mass this morning.
Last Saturday night, September 19, we had another very successful Parish Trivia Night. A good time seemed to be had by all. I thank all those who attended the event and all those who supported it, including the corporate sponsors and table sponsors of the evening. I would especially like to thank the SMG Trivia Night Committee that consisted of Leslie Mimms, Andy and Connie Martin, Chris and Mary Bohn, Bill and Sheryl Clifford, and Terry and Sandy O’Neill. Thanks for all your hard work and for a fun evening together!
Preparations continue for The Pilgrimage of Mercy: the Tour of the Major Relics of St. Maria Goretti that will be coming here Tuesday, October 20. The hours of visitation are 11 am until 11 pm, with the doors being closed at 10 pm. Dozens more volunteers are still needed for the day, as we host this event for the Church. Please go to our Website to volunteer.
As I mentioned in this letter last week, everywhere that the relics of St. Maria Goretti have been, there have miracles attributed to her intercession. Clearly, the power of God is STILL working through this young saint! In fact, in Toronto, Canada, three years ago, it is estimated that nearly 200 individuals were healed through the intercession of St. Maria Goretti and the touching of her relics. Many of those healings had to do with those who have been harmed and damaged by incest, rape, sexual assault, or other sexual violations of the human person. Touch, Holy Touch, is very important when it comes to the healing power of God. Think of how many times in Sacred Scripture, God healed through the power of touch! Now, we will NOT be able to touch the relics directly. The wax figurine that contains her skeletal remains is going to be in a crystal casket, which makes the wax figurine visible from every side. We will be able to, in fact, we are encouraged to touch the crystal casket that contains the relics. While it is true that God works healing in the presence of the relics, and that oftentimes that touch is the manner in which that healing comes about, it is NOT necessary to touch the relics directly. It is most sufficient that the glass itself be touched to receive any and every grace that God desires to give you through the means of the relics. In fact, we are encouraged to bring articles of devotion (rosaries, crucifixes, medals, wedding bands, etc.) and even photographs of family members to “touch to the relics” or the crystal casket. An object of devotion that is touched to a relic, with the intention that it be made a relic, in fact becomes a third-class relic of the Saint. Touching pictures of family member to the reliquary is a symbolic way of entrusting those family members to St. Maria Goretti, and as such, is an act of intercession on their behalf. Be assured, that St. Maria Goretti will respond to such actions by praying for them!
The Tour of the Relics has already begun this past week in Philadelphia. Hasn’t it been great to see Pope Francis at work this past week right here in our own country! Clearly, we have another Pope who knows how “to pope.” These are great days to be a Catholic Christian!
Have a great week!
In Christ, Fr. Kevin
Don’t drive faster than your Guardian Angel can fly!
Welcome! For more than 19 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you! God Bless you. —Father Kevin Welcome: Bob & Kathy Hirsch; Craig & Mary Kaster; Jacob Traub & Jessica Winger; Claire Hammond; Michael Corken, Jr.; Michael & Rhonda Cardwell

In order to help prepare for the World Meeting of Families and the visit of Pope Francis, we will reflect upon a chapter in the teaching, Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive, that
is being utilized at this gathering.
Chapter 9: Mother, Teacher, Family: The Nature and Role of the Church From its opening paragraphs, this cate-chism has explained how we were created for commun-ion with God and one another. The Church has institutional forms, because this communion must be visible, tangible, and active in the world. The Church’s earthen vessels are necessary for proclaiming a spiritual reality: The Church is the Bride of Christ, a “she,” not an “it.” In the words of St. John XXIII, the Church is our mother and teacher, our comforter and guide, our family of faith. All the baptized are the Church’s sons and daughters, giving Christians our most fundamental and authentic identity. The Church’s essence depends on Jesus, a foundation that holds us accountable but which is also deeper and more secure than any human achievement or failure. God never aban-dons us. Despite her many failures, the Church cannot shirk the responsibility to preach and live the Gospel. “Love is our mission,” and the Church is the family that teaches and embodies this love. ~Christopher C. Roberts

A Heartfelt lt THANK YOU!
I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to my Parish Fami-ly for the celebration of my 10th anniversary of ordi-nation to the diaconate. I am truly humbled to be part of this parish with so many thoughtful, kind, faithful, prayerful, and giving people. I am also humbled by all of the spiritual bouquets, prayers, sacrifices, gifts, personal remembrances, fellowship, laughs, food, and acts of service that were offered. What a night to remember! Please know I have offered prayers of thanksgiving asking God to bless + each and every one of you abundantly for your kindness to me. There are not enough words to express the gratitude we feel.

JOIN THE NATIONAL LIFE CHAIN! Last year, SMG was among 14 Westfield churches to par-ticipate in Life Chain—a peaceful and prayerful public wit-ness by the Christian community standing for one hour, silently praying for an end to abortion. The 7th Annual Westfield Life Chain is Sunday, October 4, 2:30-3:30 pm (rain or shine) at the intersection of SR 32 and Union Street. Life Chain signs will be distributed from Hadley Park at 2:15 pm. Bring your whole family! Participants have the chance to bring consumable baby items (diapers, wipes, baby shampoo, etc.) for moms and babies in need in Ham-ilton County. Questions? Call Susan Morris, 896-5164.
YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY: STUCKEY FARM FAMILY OUTING Please join us for our next Young Adult social event. This event will be unique in that it will include all young adults (ages 18-35) of the parish as well as their families, if desired. Because such a large portion of our SMG young adult community includes young families, we plan to start the tradition to include families in one event per year. Details: We will meet at the farm/orchard (Stuckey Farm 19975 N 1200 E, Sheridan) at 5 pm, Friday, October 16. We encourage people to bring a picnic dinner or a snack as we will begin at the picnic area of the orchard. Then we will explore the orchard/farm, pick apples, enjoy fel-lowship, allow any children to play in the obstacle course area, etc. Feel free to contact us if you have any further questions via e-mail, [email protected], or text, (765) 490-3639.
SMG Families join in the fun on Friday, October 16, 6-9 pm at SMG. There will
be horse-drawn wagon rides, Fall games, inflatables, s’mores, food, and a grand finale show! Professor Steve the Super Science Guy will perform his Unseen Forces Show. Admission prices: Pre-register: $6 per person or $35 max per family. At the door: $8 per person or $40 per family. Admission includes a slice of pizza, chips, a drink, s’mores, cotton candy, trick-or-treat surprises, and activities. To pre-register, e-mail Lisa Klekovkin, [email protected].
St. Maria Goretti will take part in the 40 Days for Life Campaign to end abortion, now through November 1. We are all called to stand up for the sanctity of all human life. If you’ve yet to make a peaceful and prayerful witness in front of Planned Par-
enthood (8590 Georgetown Road in Indianapolis), please consider doing so just once during this campaign. SMG is covering Mondays, 8 am-1 pm, however, you may sign up for any day/time. Just go to 40daysindy.org or contact Nancy Alic, (703) 509-4605 or waldo1031@ yahoo.com. If you’d like a prayer partner to join you, contact Nancy.

IMPORTANT DATE 9/28 2nd Grade Sacramental Prep Meetings, 9 am & 4:30 pm
10/1 SMG Spirit Day
St. Maria Goretti School is searching for a Kindergarten teacher to cover
a maternity leave November 23 through late February. You may send a résumé and a letter of interest to Vince Barnes, [email protected], by October 1.
IMPORTANT CALENDAR CHANGES
Tuesday, October 20, will be the day that the relics of St. Maria Goretti will be visiting. We will have school on this day but will have an early release day due to the anticipation of large crowds through-out the day. We will dismiss late morning after all the stu-dents visit with the relics. More details to come.
Wednesday, October 21, will be an e-learning day for all students K-8. This will allow our teachers to participate in more profession-al development with trainers from Edmodo. All students will be given e-learning assignments for this day, which backs up to our Fall Break.
ACCOMPANIST NEEDED We are in desperate need of an accompanist for the Wednesday small group Masses. Because of changes in jobs and family situations, we will have music at only one of the Wednes-day Masses a month. Wednesday Mass-es are on the second Wednesday for the 1st–3rd grades; on the third Wed-nesday for the 4th and 5th grades; and on the fourth Wednesday for the middle school (6th-8th grades). Currently, we have the second Wednesday covered. You would have to play only once a month, which would give you a whole month to practice. We have wonderful cantors this year, so you would only have to play. If you have any ability to play the piano, please consider offering your talents to the Lord for our children. If you do not have that gift, pray that those who do will volunteer. Music adds so much to our liturgies! God bless you!
