2 | St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church · Westfield, IN November 25, 2012 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 | St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church · Westfield, IN April 26, 2015 Fourth Sunday of Easter
A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Pax et Bonum!
Welcome to St. Maria Goretti on this the Fourth Sunday of our Easter season! Today is
sometimes referred to as “Good Shepherd” Sunday, as the Gospel in all three Cycles of
readings, including Cycle “B” from which we are reading this year, are accounts of Jesus being
the Good Shepherd. May Jesus always lead all of us in our lives! We do welcome all of our
guests and visitors who join us for Masses this weekend. God has brought us together around the Altar of the Lord for
good reasons! It is good to be together here!
Today is also our Associate Pastor’s, Fr. Travis Stephens, birthday. We wish Fr. Travis a very Happy Birthday and
another wonderful year! Today we thank God for the blessing that he is to our entire Parish family! Enjoy your special
day, Fr. Travis!
Today we also continue to rejoice over this past Friday night’s 2015 Spring Fling, “An Evening in Wine Country”.
I do want to thank the co-chairs for this year’s event, Doug and Valerie Ferry and Mike and Jill Lyons. They did an
outstanding job of organizing everything and everybody, to make for memorable evening for all of us! I’d like to thank
Brad Sponhauer, our Director of Discipleship, who as always, was there coordinating behind the scenes. Thanks to all
of the volunteers and committee heads and all those who worked so hard to pull this event off. I thank those who
bought raffle tickets and donated items for both the silent and the live auctions. And I also want to thank all of those
who attended the event. It was a very special evening and a lot of good was accomplished for a very good cause!
Next year’s Spring Fling is on Friday, April 29th, 2016.
Around here this coming week there’s all kinds of excitement! Next Saturday is First Holy Communion for our
second graders. The special First Communion Mass will be next Saturday, May 2nd, at 1:00 PM. There is simply
nothing more inspiring than seeing our young people receive the Holy Eucharist for the very first time. First
Communion every year is such a powerful reminder to all of us of what a blessing and privilege it is to receive Jesus in
the Holy Eucharist. We can all forget that. Sometimes, it seems, that the farther away from our own First
Communions that we get, the more we can take for granted the extraordinary Gift that God has given us in the
Eucharist. Next Saturday, the kids remind all of us of just how powerful of a gift that this Sacrament really is! Please
keep our children in your prayers all this week.
Then next Sunday, May 3rd, at our 5:30 PM Sunday evening Mass, Bishop Timothy Doherty AND Bishop
Emeritus William Higi will both be here to Confirm our young adults who have completed their formation for the
Sacrament of Confirmation. Again, another inspiring event in the annual life of our Parish family, the Confirmation of
our young people and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon them, has to make all of us recall our own Confirmation
and our own relationships with the Holy Spirit. It is a special occasion and I encourage as many of you as possible to
support our young people and to join us for Mass with the bishops next Sunday evening. And again, please keep our
candidates for Confirmation in your prayers throughout this coming week.
This past week, we said good-bye to one of our very best, Liz Mattingly. Liz bravely battled cancer for almost
eight years, and early last Sunday morning Liz died and went home to God. We have prayed together for Liz during our
Universal prayers at Mass for years. She was always a beautiful example of kindness and compassion. We pray for
her soul now. And of course, we pray for Dan, and Hannah, and Will, and Stan also. Eternal rest grant unto her O,
Lord!
This week let us bring the Resurrected Christ to all we come in contact with! He is the Good Shepherd!!!
In Christ,
Fr. Kevin
Life is short. Pray hard!
Welcome! For more than 19 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with
everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our
Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you!
God Bless you. —Father Kevin Welcome: Judy Bryk, Matt Pinard & Carol Kloss,
Thomas & Lindi Messina, Andrew & Sara Finnigan, Nicholas & Beth Bachman

How did you hear about SMG? We have many
friends at SMG, and they continued to tell us wonder-
ful things about this parish. After being invited to
Mass and various other events, our family felt at
home and determined this was our faith family.
Hobbies
Brian and Chris = fishing Courtney = reading
Angela = biking
What’s the best thing about SMG? The sense of
family that we have felt so far. Our family has been
embraced by many in such a short amount of time.
Favorite Prayer It is one that my mother always
said to all six of us as we walked out the door: “Dear
Jesus, I love you. Please help me each day to be kind
and gentle and quick to obey.” I say it with my own
family, and as a principal, my students say this upon
leaving the cafeteria.
Favorite Saint It is hard to pick just one, howev-
er, if I had to, it would be St. Faustina.
Prayer for the future I love the Divine Mercy Chap-
let, so I will quote that, “Eternal Father, I offer You
the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly
beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for
our sins and those of the whole world. Amen”

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
O God, Father of all Mercies, Provider of a bountiful Har-
vest, send Your Graces upon those You have called to
gather the fruits of Your labor; preserve and strengthen
them in their lifelong service of you. Open the hearts of
Your children that they may discern Your Holy Will; in-
spire in them a love and desire to surrender themselves
to serving others in the name of Your son, Jesus Christ.
Teach all Your faithful to fol-
low their respective paths in
life guided by Your Divine
Word and Truth. Through the
intercession of the Most
Blessed Virgin Mary, all the
Angels, and Saints, humbly
hear our prayers and grant
Your Church's needs, through
Christ, our Lord. Amen.

REFLECTION FOR THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
In today’s Gospel we hear Jesus say, “I am the good
shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the
sheep.” A good shepherd is one who willingly lays down
his life for his sheep—lives a life of sacrifice. Jesus freely
laid down His life for you. Reflect on what that means for
you personally this week. How do you imitate Jesus in
living a life of sacrifice for others?

Spring Fling 2015Spring Fling 2015——
“An Evening in Wine Country”“An Evening in Wine Country” Last Friday night, our parish held the 19th anniversary of Spring Fling for St Maria Goretti!
On behalf of the Spring Fling committee, co-chairs Doug & Valerie Ferry and Mike & Jill Lyons, and our entire Parish Staff, I want to sincerely thank everyone for your support of this impor tant fundra is ing event .
To some, it might seem “a little odd” to have a fund-raiser each year, when it appears so many people gen-erously tithe week after week! Well, our tithing does provide the necessary funds to “keep SMG open,” but tithing does not cover everything—especially “unexpected costs.” To help each and every ministry at SMG and to help SMG achieve its mission goals, we have “Spring Fling.” All of the funds raised that night will simply go toward fulfilling the mis-sion and the ministry of our Parish Family. The generosity of each donor and each buyer last Friday night will go a long way toward enabling SMG to be the hands and feet of Christ to our parish-ioners and for the communities in which we live. Please thank the generous sponsors who helped make this event possible. And please join me in a HUGE
THANK YOU to our event co-chairs: Doug & Valerie Ferry and Mike & Jill Lyons for all of their hard work!

CALLING ALL SMG UNIFORMS!
It’s spring clean up time—that time of year when all of

ISTEP+ TESTING
Students in Grades 3-8 will begin round two of the

earn up to 20% of your total purchase.
USED UNIFORM SALE
The spring sale will take place Tuesday, May 5, 7:30-
11 am. You may drop off your used uniform items at
the School Office.

- Cost of item
