Our Rich History

• St. Margaret’s is the oldest girls’ school in Singapore

and the Far East

• In our 179-year-old history, St. Margaret’s has seen

many ups and downs, including World War I and

World War II

• Through it all, we remain faithful to our mission to not

only educate girls but to care for the less privileged.

• Strong belief that we are

Blessed to be a Blessing.

Common Developmental Characteristics during Adolescence

Learning about her own identity [SELF]:

o Who am I?

o Where am I headed?

o How do I fit into society?

Seeking acceptance from peers [PEERS]

Leaning on good relationship with parents and guidance from them [FAMILY]

Page 32: St. Margaret’s Secondary School 08 January 2021

Challenge of adolescence(Account of adolescence, anna freud)

… fluctuations and extreme opposites would have been deemed highly abnormal at any other time of life.

At this time they may signify no more than that an adult structure of personality takes a long time to emerge,

that the individual in question does not cease to experiment

and is in no hurry to close down on possibilities.

Page 33: St. Margaret’s Secondary School 08 January 2021

WHAT THE GIRL IS GOING THROUGH(CONSCIOUSLY OR SUB-CONSCIOUSLY)

KEY POINTS FROM CHAPTERS 1 & 2 OF BOOK

Feel the need to replace the family with a tribe that

they feel proud to call their own

Pressure to be in a tribe as it

affects the “social status”

Using meanness to maintain social

power

Popular ≠Well-liked

The brain’s social emotional

network outmatch its sensible

cognitive control system

FOUR: The four steps for teaching your child

any skill (adapted: Stacey Ashlund)

I. You do it for them

II. You do it with them

III. You watch them do it

IV. They do it on their own

What adults can do?

Extracted from: How to Raise an Adult, an anti-helicopter parenting (Julie Lythcott Haims)

Page 37: St. Margaret’s Secondary School 08 January 2021

THREE:

The three things to stop ASAP:

Stop saying “we” when you really mean your child

Stop arguing with teachers, coaches, etc.

Teach your kid to respectfully advocate for

themselves.

Stop doing their homework.

What adults can do?

Page 38: St. Margaret’s Secondary School 08 January 2021

What adults can do?

Do not take the rejection personally

Continue to insist on basic courtesy from the teenager

Help her be assertive without being mean

Help the teenager realise that there are problems that are beyond them, and call for help is not betrayal of their friends

Technology:

Preparing the teenager for the online world before she is allowed

to navigate it but set the terms of use from the start

Age appropriate exposure and material provision for the

teenager

Make clear to teenager rules of virtual social behaviour is the

same as that of real social behaviour

Our Beliefs

•Education is not about finding the model answer as many problems our children will face in the future will have no model answer

•There is no map, so we need to provide them with a compass (adapted from sharing by Mr Lim Siong Guan with SMSS staff)

•Failure is part of the learning process, whether in the formal curriculum or social / life skills

•Assessment of/is for/as learning where the learning is more important than the outcome

Taking Pride, Being Resilient, Showing Care)

weighted and non-weighted assessments.

• Use teachers’ feedback and assessment results to reflect on their understanding and find out how to improve their performance.

• Ensure consistent and timely completion of all forms of assessments throughout the year.

Parents:• Encourage their children to take

charge of their own learning (Self-Directed).

• Remind them to be consistent in their learning review and revision (Self-Discipline).

• Look out for signs of excessive anxiety or exhaustion, especially in the period leading up to the end-of-year examinations.

What is Subject-Based Banding (SBB)?

• Every student is unique and possesses different strengths. Taking subjects at a higher academic level can help students nurture their strengths and give them more opportunities throughout their educational journey, so that they are more engaged in learning.

• Previously, students in N(A) and N(T) courses can take higher-level subjects starting from Secondary 3. With SBB, your child can start doing so from the start of Secondary 1, to build a stronger foundation in subjects that they are good at.

58

Page 59: St. Margaret’s Secondary School 08 January 2021

Eligibility Criteria and Opting into SBB• Eligible N(A) and N(T) students should have received an application form,

based on the following criteria:

• Each student should take no more than 3 higher-level subjects so as to

ensure that he/she can cope with the overall academic demands.59

Other Opportunities to Offer Higher-Level Subjects

• Beyond the start of Sec 1, students who do well in school-based

examinations may be considered to take higher-level subjects if found

suitable to do so by our school.

• Eligible N(A) and N(T) students will receive an application form after the

Sec 1 mid-year or year-end examinations, based on the following

criteria:• 75% or higher in the subject;

• 60% or higher in the overall average; and

• Positive learning attitude to cope with the higher academic demand

• Our school will provide support through bridging programmes for these

new SBB students. 61

Page 62: St. Margaret’s Secondary School 08 January 2021

What if my child struggles with the higher-level subject?

• Students are encouraged to continue with the higher-level subjects until the end of Sec 2, as students do need time to adjust to the higher academic demands.

• Our school will monitor students’ progress in the higher-level subjects as well as overall progress in all subjects.

• Our school is mindful of students’ socio-emotional and academic needs and will endeavour to provide the necessary support to students to help them cope.

How are students allocated to their classes?
