The Life of Sr. Thea, Part 3 of 10
On August 12, 1956, Bertha was accepted into the
novitiate and officially given a new name, Sr. Mary
Thea. The novitiate was an intense time of isolation
and separation from the world. This was also the
time for the civil rights movement in our country,
including the famous Montgomery Bus Boycott.
Unfortunately, Sr. Thea couldn’t be involved or kept
up on the latest news. Yet, this was where God
wanted her to be. After novitiate, at age twenty, Sr.
Thea professed her first vows and was allowed back
into the world. She became the first Black sister for
the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in La
Crosse, WI.
Sr. Thea’s first assignment as a religious sister was teaching at an upper middle
class Catholic elementary school in La Crosse named Blessed Sacrament. She
was thrilled with her new assignment since she loved education and teaching.
A few of the parents, however, expressed their concerns to the principal when
they heard that their children were going to be taught by a Black woman. After
arranging a meeting between the parents and Sr. Thea, though, her personality
immediately won over the parents. In fact, it quickly was seen as an honor to
be a student of Sr. Thea’s.
Sr. Thea had a gift for connecting with children. She once said, “I like children. I
think they’re much more fun than adults.” (218) She went on to explain how if
you love them, they will love you. Empowering her students to believe in
themselves was her constant message. While at Blessed Sacrament, Sr. Thea
had the great idea of putting her students in contact with the poor Black
students from her childhood Catholic school. While she enjoyed her time at
Blessed Sacrament School very much, two years later she was reassigned to
teach back home at Holy Child Jesus in Mississippi. Finally, she could go back to
the south!
STEWARDSHIP MEDITATION
“Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, it is not pompous.” (1 Corinthians
13:4)
Do you get jealous? Do you focus more on the things that other people have
than on the gifts that God has given to you? Are you pompous? Do you acquire
more possessions to impress others? At times we are all guilty of these things.
Pray for more humility. Pray to become less self-centered and become more
God-centered.

There will be no 8:30 Communion Service that morning.
WINTER WEATHER
With Fr. Tony in residence, Masses will not be canceled due to snow, ice,
or temperature. Priests can say Mass alone and honor the Mass intention
for that day. It is highly advisable, however, that you use caution and your
best judgment on coming to Mass during these winter months. God
understands if weather prevents us from coming to Church. Please use
