Sacrament of Reconciliation: Saturdays from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm  

Sacrament  of Baptism:  Baptisms are held on  the 1st and 3rd Sundays of  the month  at  1:30  pm.  Please  contact  the  Parish  Office  for  requirements  and scheduling.  

Sacrament of Marriage: Couples must contact the Pastor at least one year prior to the desired date and before making other arrangements. Either the bride or groom must be a registered member of St. Luke.  

Anointing of  the Sick & Communion  to  the Homebound: Can be arranged by contacting the Parish Office. Please do not wait until the last moment.

THE STORY OF EMMAUS~ FEELING OUR HEARTS BURNING WITH HOPE

The two disciples on the road to Emmaus were having a very difficult day. They were part of “the group,” the followers of Jesus, and they were coming from Jerusalem after the crucifixion. It was terrible. Now, three days later, there were rumors that his body was gone. Some of the women from their group and some of the apostles had gone out to look, and it was true. What does this all mean? They were so filled with their own pain, disappointment and confusion that they didn’t recognize Jesus as he caught up with them on the road. He asked them what was wrong. “They stopped, looking downcast.” In their disillusionment and despair, they did not even look at him close-ly. They just wanted to tell him the story of their pain. “We were hoping…” they said. We were hoping. So many times in our lives, we get caught up in our own sorrows and we don’t recognize Jesus standing there with us. “We were hoping” … that our lives would not be so messy. Instead, our loved ones are ill; our marriages are not what we had hoped for; or perhaps our children disap-point us. We, or someone we love, struggles with an addiction. They tell him their stories and something in Jesus draws them to him: his warmth, his under-standing. He tells them about the suffering servant of Israel. He says suffering is part of the sto-ry. He touches their hearts as they begin to see the scriptures in a new way, though they don’t fully make the connection. When it comes time to separate on the road, they urge him to say with them. “It is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” It might have been common to ask a traveler to stay as night drew on because the roads were dangerous. But there is something more. They feel so drawn to him and want to stay in his presence. Things are more hopeful as he speaks. They feel his deep care for each of them. It is somehow a very personal connection with this stranger they do not recognize. So he stays with them. As they gather around the table for dinner, there is warmth and prayer and then Jesus takes the customary bread, blesses it and breaks it. It hits them both at once. Jesus! Suddenly, everything makes sense and Jesus is here! Then he vanishes. Astonished the two friends stare across the table at each other. “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way?” They had felt it, but they had not recognized him. Now, the scriptures and this breaking of bread come together in their hearts. Our lives are busy, complicated and messy. We often ignore Jesus’ presence in our lives, even though he is always with us, loving each one of us in deeply personal way. How did we miss seeing him? How did we not recognize him? When we get caught up in our own pain, guilt and anger, we miss seeing him walking next to us. We know deep in our hearts how flawed and sinful we are. We might feel that we are simply unworthy of the kind of endless love Jesus offers. Yet, that love is there for us, in the midst of the suffering servant-hood of our lives. When we focus on ourselves and our own sin, we miss what is standing in the road next to us: Jesus telling us that he loves us in all of our sin. He w ants to be a deeper presence in our lives. When we pause and let that love sink into us, we can feel our hearts burn within us. The two disciples, recognizing that burning in their hearts, “set out at once” despite the dangers of night travel. This time they probably did not walk with downcast eyes, but ran, laughing and hug-ging each other on the road as they realized what had happened. They were now spreading the good news. Pope Francis has said that the two became “witnesses of the hope that is Christ because they met him. This Jesus,” the Pope said, “is the Risen Traveler that journeys with us, and Jesus is here today. He is here among us. He is here in his word, is here on the altar, journeying with us.” Jesus vanished from the table in Emmaus but he remained with the disciples in their burning hearts. They are more prepared to be broken and given for others. And, he remains present with us, whether we recognize him or not. If we open our hearts and feel them burn, we become disciples, running in joy to spread the good news of his love and mercy. taken from creightononlineministries.com

The Liturgy of the Hours is the official Prayer of the Church. Morning Prayer and the Office for the Dead are a part of that prayer. We will continue to pray for all those who have died and whose family & loved ones cannot have the wake, funeral Mass and burial they would have wanted, because of COVID-19 restrictions. The Church continues to walk with these families and we hope this remembrance will bring them some comfort.

We will continue praying Morning Prayer each Saturday at 11:00 am.

When restrictions are eased and we are able to gather once again, we will have Memorial Masses if families wish to do so.

Mother’s Day Remembrances Each year, during the month of May, we seek to remember the women in our lives, living and de-ceased, who have been inspirations to us. Ordinarily we would have cards available in our Narthex for pa-rishioners to fill out beginning at Easter. This is no ordinary time and as of now we cannot provide those cards. But you can still have those special women remembered at the Masses during the month of May. Children’s Gospel Reflection for Luke 24:13-35

Have you ever searched high and low for something, only to discover that it has been right there in front of you all the time? Somehow, we manage to miss something obvious; we simply cannot see it clearly at that particular moment! In today’s Gospel we hear how two disciples of Jesus didn’t recognize him until he shared a very special moment with them. How long did the two disciples spend with Jesus on the road to Emmaus? Probably several hours, since Emmaus was approximately seven miles from Jerusalem. They spent enough time to want to invite him to share a meal with them as the day drew to a close. Why do you think the disciples did not Know Jesus? Jesus had been crucified and buried, and they were filled with sadness and feelings of loss. Although they had heard rumors that some of the women who followed Jesus claimed that he had risen from the dead and was alive, it was too much for them to accept. Their doubt and uncer-tainty made them ‘blind’ to the truth and they were unable to ‘see’ Jesus as he walked beside them. What was it that finally made them recognize Jesus? They knew at once when Jesus took the bread, blessed and broke it, and then shared it with them. At the Last Supper, Jesus told his disciples, ‘Do this in memory of me.’ When do we hear these words being spo-ken again? A priest uses these words each time we cele-brate the Eucharist together. Jesus continues to share him-self with us today through the bread and wine that become his Body and Blood. How do you imagine the disciples felt that day? As the disciples set out to make the journey to Emmaus, they were filled with gloom and sadness. They walked along with heavy hearts and few words of comfort. Yet by the end of their journey, they had seen and heard Jesus for themselves. Their sadness turned to joy, despair became hope and their faith had returned! They probably didn’t even wait to finish their meal before hurrying back to Jeru-salem to share their wonderful news with the others.

Loving Father, open our eyes to your love in the world

and people around us. Make our hearts burn with faith and hope in

you! In Jesus’ name we pray.
