Volume 3 Issue 48 Cost: Priceless December 2, 2015 St Lucie County Community Services, in partnership with Community Transit, is seeking local business support for the 5 th Annual Secret Santa Giveaway. More than 40 businesses located along St. Lucie County bus routes were promoted to residents through business spon- sorships last year. The week of Dec. 14-18, randomly selected transit riders will receive treasures provided by local business- es and presented by VIP Secret Santas. Participating busi- nesses receive targeted promotion as well as media coverage and gain an introduction of their business to new customers. Last year more than 100 transit riders received a gift pack- age containing gift certificates/cards, coupons, event tickets, informational flyers, promotional items and more. This low-cost advertising option increases awareness of local businesses and dining options and supports transit as an alternative trans- portation option for area residents. The program ensures that riders know that local businesses can be easily accessed through the transit system and encourages them to support these businesses as they complete their holiday shopping. Please join us in spreading the holiday spirit. Businesses interested in participating should call 772-462-1777 or email [email protected]. To find out more about the Community Transit call 772-464 -RIDE (7433) or visit: http://treasurecoastconnector.com. The Route Shout app (http://m.routeshout.com) is also available for Apple and Android smart phones to obtain bus stop and route information, map your trip, save your favorites and track the current location of buses. The clothing was taken to Hope’s Closet in Fort Pierce and placed in a bou-tique-style setting where chil-dren and their fami-lies can shop for clothes free of charge. “I think people typically picture cardboard, plastic and alu-minum when you talk about recycling, but this year we wanted to do something different,” said Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful Coordinator Christina Daigle. “If you think about it, donating clothing can be considered recycling because it can be reused instead of being thrown away,” she added. “We’re thrilled to help and so proud of our generous city employees for making America Recycles Day such a success!”

Writer continued from page 1 da. In her memoir Kamm talks about growing up in a multi-generational household, with grandparents who were born in Poland. Their home was a modest ranch house built in the 1940s for returning Word War II veterans and their families. She writes, “It is hard to imagine how six of us lived in such a small house. . . Living in such close quarters, I developed an imaginary and very private world. I was artistic, and like many artists, I needed a lot of personal space.” She would arise when it was still dark, everyone sound asleep, and descend into the basement, where she would spend an hour writing and illustrating books. As a six year old she recognized that she was destined to be an artist and a writer. In the morning when sunlight entered the windows of her bedroom, tiny rainbows washed the walls when sunlight re-fracted off the bevel-edged mirror hanging over the low dress-er. “At night I would dream I was underwater, surrounded by floating rainbows,” she wrote. Birds of Florida is an illustrated non-fiction children’s book geared to ages 5 to 9 that introduces young readers to the birds of Florida that share our waterways, forests, fields and backyards. The text engages the reader by presenting unique features and facts to enhance a child’s ability to remember and to identify each bird. Birds of Florida is written to pique a child’s curiosity, sharpen powers of observation and ultimately create a lifelong interest in the avian world. Did you know that ospreys can completely submerge un-derwater, unlike most other birds of prey that eat fish? The osprey has a third, semi-transparent eyelid that closes and acts like a pair of goggles, helping it see clearly beneath the water. Did you know that birds, like children, also like to play? Both the female and the male tree swallow search for feathers in which to line their nest. Tree swallows will travel a great distance to gather loose feathers. Above the nest they can be seen playfully chasing a purposely dropped feather, re-catching it in flight. Sometimes an aerial free-for-all follows, where several birds chase the dropped feather until one re-trieves it. Kamm has been a member of the National League of American Pen Women in the Art category since 1989 and in the Letters category since 1993. She has won numerous awards for her poetry, articles and books in competitions sponsored by this organization. Founded in 1897 and based in Washington, DC, the Na-tional League of American Pen Women (NLAPW) encour-ages, recognizes and promotes the production of creative work in Art, Letters, and Music. Its membership is comprised of professional artists, writers and musical composer. For more about the NLAPW, visit www.nlapw.org.
