PARAYKO MAKES PRESENCE FELTRookie defenseman Colton Parayko has four points in his last four games, including the primary assist on Scott Gomez’ game-winninggoal last time out (Tues. vs. TBL).  The 6’6, 226-pound Parayko leads all rookie defensemen with six points (3g, 3a) and 19:35 of icetime per game while his +6 rating is second-only to Dylan Larkin (+8).  In one of his most notable games to date, an overtime loss vs.the Islanders last Saturday, Parayko became the only player in the NHL to log six shots and four blocks in the same game this season. Though the comparison is very pre-mature, below is a look at the first nine games of not only Parayko, but the last two defensemen towin the Calder Trophy – Aaron Ekblad (2014-15) and Tyler Myers (2009-10).First Nine GamesColton Parayko (2015-16) – Six points (3g, 3a), 19:35 TOI/G, +6Aaron Ekblad (2014-15) – Three points (1g, 2a), 21:25 TOI/G, -1Tyler Myers (2009-10-) – Five points (2g, 3a), 20:21 TOI/G, +8

HEY MAN, NICE SHOTThe Blues rank 3rd overall in shots per game (32.8) and shots allowed per game (26.0).  The Blues also rank 2nd in the NHL in shotattempts differential in 5-on-5 play – posting a +97 (429 for / 332 against) surplus that trails only Los Angeles (+99).  Individually,Vladimir Tarasenko leads the team and the NHL overall with 42 shots on goal, while defenseman Alex Pietrangelo (194) has been onthe ice for more team shot attempts (5-on-5) than any other player.  DRAWING THE LONG STRAWThe Blues rank 7th overall with a 51.9% success rate in the faceoff circle this season.  For a further breakdown, they are 11th in theoffensive zone (51.8%), 19th in the defensive zone (48.4%) and 3rd in the neutral zone (56.1%).  Kyle Brodziak leads the club andranks 13th overall with a 59% success rate, a far cry from his 49.5% career average.  Last season, the Blues were the second bestfaceoff team, posting a 53.4% success rate that trailed only Boston’s 53.6%.  From a franchise perspective, it was the best faceoffseason on record, and by a wide margin, trumping the next best mark (2000-01 and 2013-14, 51.9%) by almost 2%. IMPORTANCE OF A FAST START The Western Conference is demanding.  In 2014-15, the conference produced six 100-point teams for the second consecutive season. What’s more, it kept a 95-point Los Angeles Kings club out of the playoff picture – just the third time since 1995-96 (start of 82-gameslate) that a team that garnered as many points was forced to start vacation early.  That being said, a good start to the season will beessential.  Consider that of the eight playoff teams last season, only Winnipeg (4-5-1) got off to a sub .500 10-game start.  As for theothers, they combined to go 45-20-5 in their first 10 outings.  On the flip side, the six teams that missed the postseason combined for a24-23-13 start – a record that is slightly inflated by the aforementioned Kings’ 6-2-2 mark out-of-the-gate. THAT’S A WRAPThe Blues etched another memorable regular season in 2014-15, in fact, in terms of points, it was tied for the third best mark infranchise history (51-24-7, 109 pts).  The culmination of the season brought the Blues the Central Division Championship, their seconddivision title in the last four years and the ninth in club history overall.  Since 2011-12, and under the direction of GM Doug Armstrongand Head Coach Ken Hitchcock, the Blues have posted three of the top four regular seasons in franchise history1999-00 – 114 pts2013-14 – 111 pts2014-15 – 109 pts2011-12 – 109 pts HITCHCOCK IN EXCLUSIVE COMPANY (Reg. Season) Ken Hitchcock is a member of the NHL’s 700-win club, a four-member group that includes three other coaches that have servedbehind the Blues’ bench (Scotty Bowman, Al Arbour, Joel Quenneville)
