FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK By Fr. Terry Kerner
I had a bit of a scare a week and a half ago at the end of our Parish Fi-
nance Council meeting when I experienced a “cardiac event” and was rushed to
Beaumont Oakwood. After what seemed like countless tests and endless exami-
nation, I experience the proverbial heart catherization. The cardiologist located
the problem-a severely obstructed artery. The necessary stent was implanted
allowing for proper blood flow. I feel better though encouraged by the doctors to
go a little easier for a week or two. Thank God Fr. Gary’s knee surgery has been
postponed and he is able to celebrate many of the liturgies. Please keep me in
your prayer as I hold you in mine.
This weekend we, of course, celebrate the Beatification of Fr. Casey-
Detroit’s hometown saint. Many parishioners have had firsthand experience with
Father Solanus from years ago. Others have stories of miracles and positive sto-
ries that they attribute to his intervention. It is good to share these stories with
family members and friends. In this age of cynicism and doubt, hearing testimo-
nies of minor miracles and prayers answered might be what evangelization is all
about. Let us celebrate the holiness in our midst, not just at Ford Field this
weekend, but in our homes and parishes everyday!
Have a good week and a Happy Thanksgiving.
PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
O gracious Lord, we give you thanks for your
overflowing generosity to us.
Thank you for the blessings of the food we eat.
Thank you for our home, our family and
friends.
Thank you for our health, our work and our
play.
Please send hope to those who are hungry,
alone, sick, suffering war and violence.
Open our hearts to your love.
We ask your blessing through Christ you Son.
Amen.

During the time of Thanksgiving, we would like to extend a special
thanks to our volunteers and customers. We view this work as a ministry that
provides sacramental and information to help us all grow in relationship to
God and others. We thank God for the opportunity to serve, learn and grow.
We invite you and your friends to visit the shop this Advent and Christ-
mas season for cards, gifts, books, and some friendly conversation. In addition
to our regular hours before and after Masses, we will be open on Tuesdays be-
tween 11:30AM-6:30 PM
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
GUIDE BOOK AND DIRECTORY
We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory
for the church. This book is being provided and direct-mailed to each family at
no cost to our church, and it is again being subsidized by local businesses that
advertise. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about
advertising in our book, please call our Church Office.
Here is a chance to update YOUR record for our annual Guide Book.
Please let us know any changes, additions or deletions that may have oc-
curred in YOUR family over the past year. Have you changed your phone
number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your
children still at home and are they included in your membership record? Do
you want your record published?
If you have not already informed us about changes to your record, please
let us know now so that the information in the Guide Book & Directory is cor-
rect. The Church Office number is 336.3227. Thank you for your help.
ADVENT WREATH LIGHTER NEEDED
If you as an individual, couple or family are interested in lighting the
candles for our parish Advent wreath, please complete the coupon below and
return it in the collection basket at church. We will call you to schedule a
weekend Mass for your participation in the time honored tradition. Lighting of
the Advent Wreath takes place at all weekend Masses, beginning Saturday,
December 3rd to Sunday, December 24th.
FAITH FORMATION
This weekend you will notice the presence of our Giving Trees in the
Sanctuary and in Resurrection Hall. A long honored tradition of our parish,
our Giving Tree has allowed parishioners to provide gifts and support to those
in need during the Christmas season. As in years past, we ill ask that parish-
ioners select a tag or two or an envelope from the tree and purchase the item
requested. Our recipients are Nativity of Our Lord Parish, Vista Maria and St.
Patrick’s Senior Center as well as for our parish Food Collection. Nativity of
Our Lord Parish, Vista Maria and St. Patrick’s Center has asked that items
not be wrapped this year, allowing for more of a shopping and wrapping event
for their recipients. All items must be returned to the parish by Sunday, De-
cember 17th. Food collection envelopes are for donations of checks, cash, and

gift cards ( Meijer’s or Kroger’s) and can be dropped in the collection basket or at the
parish office. If you are interested in helping to sort the items or deliver them, please
call the parish office.
Faith Formation, Sacramental Preparation, and RCIA classes resume the week of
Monday, November 27th.
Wishing all of you the gift of Faith and the Blessings of Hope this Thanksgiving
Season!
HOLIDAY MAIL FOR HEROES
Please consider signing a box of Christmas cards for our men & women in the mili-
tary. Cards can be religious or secular. Please nothing political or inappropriate for chil-
dren to see or read. Writing a short note of encouragement and thanks is an additional
thoughtful step. Last names are not necessary or encouraged. No items should be placed
in the cards including glitter, confetti, gift cards, and such. Envelopes can be addressed
as one of the following: Military Man, Military Woman, Military Family, Military Civil-
ian Staff, or Veteran. Signed or unsigned cards can be dropped off at the parish center
beginning November 18th. Signing tables with additional cards will be in Resurrection
Hall before and after all Masses between November 18th and December 17th. All cards
will be delivered to Veterans’ Hospital Detroit on December 18th.

THE COIMNG OF ADVENT
As Advent arrives we begin a season of prayer and patient waiting. We look to the
birth of the light of the world with expectant preparation. With anticipation of a long
promised guest, we clean out the clutter in our hearts and minds. We step away from the
havoc of our lives, so that we can hear in the stillness the world’s prayer, “ O Come Lord
Jesus”.
Advent means preparing your heart. Once I am convinced that preparing the
heart is more important than preparing the Christmas tree, I will be a lot less frustrated
at the end of a day.
