**Updating our Sick List**A very important part of our Christian Stewardship is remembering to pray for those who are ill. In an effort to keep our list current and relevant, we are going to begin a process for updating the sick list of the parish. Beginning June 1st, we will now keep names on the list for six (6) months at a time. All names will be removed at the end of the sixmonth period and a new list will begin. If you wish to have a name continued, you must notify the parish before the sixmonth deadline to keep it updated on the list. Also, names may be added or withdrawn at any time throughout the year, as the need arises. You may notify the parish by contacting our parish secretary at 2485428060, by mail, or place a request in the collection basket during Mass. Watch the bulletin for future update reminders.

GOSPEL MEDITATION ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTUREMay 20, 2018 Pentecost Sunday

Today we celebrate the "birthday of the Church!" Pentecost is described in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. But before the great driving wind and tongues of fire empowering the Disciples, the Holy Spirit had already arrived. The Gospel for today's Mass during the day is from John 20. Jesus appears to the fearful disciples after his resurrection. He first speaks a message of calm. "Peace be with you." The apostles "rejoiced when they saw the Lord." When the enthusiastic response settles down, Jesus "breathed on them and said to them 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'"

This action is Trinitarian, and it has happened before. If you turn your Bible back to the beginning, you'll read: "The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so many became a living being" (Genesis 2:7). In the Garden of Eden, we see God's first, original covenant with man. The breath of life signifies that original indwelling of grace, the special state of likeness and friendship with God before the Fall. Here now, in this locked room, the Apostles receive the longawaited promise: the very breath of God, new life, a new covenant.

In the pairing of these two readingsthe Pentecost experience in Acts and the breath of Jesus in John's Gospel we see that the coming of the Holy Spirit is not only an empowering, it is an indwelling. We have each received the breath of grace in our baptism. It is confirmed, strengthened, and deepened in each reception of the sacraments. If we persevere in virtue, the Spirit of God is alive in us, inspiring our actions of love. This Pentecost Sunday, how is the breath of God alive in you?

Stewardship Thoughts 4

A Trinitarian theme three persons in one God connects today’s Scripture readings. In the First Reading from Deuteronomy, Moses professes that due to God’s uniqueness, people should be inspired to follow His directives. According to St. Paul’s Letter to the Roman community, the Spirit permits us to become adopted children and heirs through Christ Roman society held adopted children in high esteem. In a powerful evangelization message from St. Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus commissions His Apostles:Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.Do we, as faithful stewards, realize our baptismal call, our gift of discipleship from the Lord? Moved by the Holy Trinity, do we express this discipleship in a spirit of evangelization by welcoming home our brothers and sisters who have left the faith, and those who do not know Christ? Please read Archbishop Allen Vigneron’s pastoral letter,Unleash the Gospel, at unleashthegospel.org, to review the guideposts for evangelization in the Archdiocese of Detroit.

2018 Natural Family Planning Support & Education Series: Deeper Reflections

May 22nd at Sacred Heart Major Seminary Martha, Mary, and NFP

Jesus visited the home of Martha and her sister, Mary. In her busyness Martha felt overwhelmed and alone as she tended to the needs of those she invited into her home. When she asked Jesus to make Mary help, Jesus responded to more than just her request. What can this interaction reveal to us as NFP users? We’ll reflect on this story and on Jesus’ words to the Martha & the Mary in each of us.

Archbishop’s Message

As I shared in my pastoral letter, Unleash the Gospel, each and every person in our Archdiocese is called to encounter Jesus anew, to grow daily as his disciple, and to give witness to the power of his mercy. In this spirit, the theme of the 2018 Catholic Services Appeal isOpening Doors to Grow with Christ.

To be a disciple of Jesus Christ requires a constant process of growth, like the seed that fell on rich soil. Christians seek to be more like Jesus, to treat others as he did, to pray as he prayed, to love as he loved, and to honor God in every area of our lives. As the U.S. bishops summarized in their pastoral letter,Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response, growing as his disciples demands that we embrace stewardship as a way of life.

Each year, we have the opportunity to grow with Jesus through the CSA. As faithful stewards of God’s grace, we live out the Gospel mission of our Church when we embrace the valuable ministries, programs, and services our annual appeal supports. The CSA unites us as a faith community because no one individual or parish could possibly accomplish alone all of these good works that we are able to do together! Because of the CSA and all of the good it accomplishes, we grow with Jesus to become, in the words of Pope Francis, a “band of joyful missionary disciples.”

As you prayerfully consider your pledge to the 2018 Catholic Services Appeal, please take a moment to read and reflect on the gratitude your friends and neighbors have for the CSA and its many benefactors. I am sure you will be inspired to once again make the most generous gift possible.
