HELP KEEP THE FIRE GOING! You may recall how, in the First Reading on the 3rd Sunday of Lent C, Moses saw a burning bush that was not consumed by the flames. From that awesome, yet frightening display of the divine presence, Moses came to know - and build up - a relation-ship with the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - some 300 years after these Patriarchs had died. Some 1,600 years later, Jesus rekindled that fire and set it roaring through His Apostles. Now, some 2,000 years later, that flame needs some tending, at least locally - lest it gets extinguished.
While Christianity is becoming increasingly dormant in Western civilization [and even in many Catholic homes!], it is being fanned into flame in many African and Asian countries. What are we doing to support those places where our Church is growing? What are we doing to rekindle that flame of faith in our own part of the world - and in our own families?
WE NEED FUEL FOR THE FIRE! Just as a fire needs three things to grow: oxygen, heat and fuel, Christians also need three things, or rather, three Persons to grow: Father, Son and Spirit. Through the Church we deepen our relation-ship with our Triune God. Through the Sacraments and parish ministries, we are gifted with the fuel, oxygen and heat we need to brightly radiate God’s presence, to boldly speak God’s word, to tenderly share God’s love. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
In Christ,
Prayer over the Offerings - The Holy Spirit - C May the fire of the Spirit, O Lord, sanctify the
sacrificial gifts offered in your sight, just as it
enkindled the hearts of the disciples of your Son.
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.
Prayer after Communion - The Holy Spirit - C
May these gifts we have consumed benefit us, O Lord, that we may always be aflame with the same Spirit whom
you wondrously poured out on your Apostles, Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
From the Pastor Pentecost Sunday - C June 9, 2019
COME HOLY SPIRIT. In some countries, this Monday and Tuesday are a Solemnity: the highest-ranking feast day. They do this so they can celebrate Pentecost Sunday on Pentecost Monday and Tuesday! Last year, Pope Francis added a new feast on the first day after Pentecost: ‘The Blessed Virgin
Mary, Mother of the Church.’ It highlights her unique interaction with the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity. The Holy Spirit ‘overshadowed her’ when she conceived Jesus; and the Holy Spirit came to her again at Pentecost. However, ALL are called to accept and interact with the Holy Spirit - as the orations in the three votive Masses of the Holy Spirit remind us. Since we reflected on sets A and B in past years, today we’ll reflect on set C, even though we cannot use these orations at Pentecost Masses since they have their own particular orations.
WE MUST PASS ON THE TORCH. One very dangerous tendency is to see the events we celebrate liturgically at Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, etc., as ways to recall the past. While there is an element of ‘remembering’ - ‘recalling’ and ‘reconnecting with’ the PAST, sacred liturgy also ‘makes PRESENT’ the events that will only reach their fulfillment in the FUTURE. Unlike reenactments of Washington’s crossing of the Delaware, which cannot make our first President ‘present’ nor bring his actions to completion, sacred liturgy DOES make Jesus present - and enables us to do our part in making His Kingdom more present on earth. Having RE-received the Holy Spirit’s sevenfold gifts and living flame, to whom - and how - will we pass them on to others?
Collect - The Holy Spirit - Votive Mass - C O God, who sanctify your universal Church
in every people and nation, pour out,
we pray, the gifts of your Spirit across
the face of the earth, so that your divine grace, which was at work when the Gospel
was first proclaimed, may now spread
through the hearts of those who believe in you. Through our Lord Jesus … for ever and ever. Amen.
