Fourth Sunday of Easter As little children we paid close attention to our parents. Hopefully, we could trust in their love for us and know that nothing could harm us as long as they were around. As we grew older we put our trust in others. Some of them cared more about us than others. We were able to sense the ones who really loved and respected us. We may have been wary of others who seemed to fulfill their duty more out of obligation or because of what they would be paid. Then the time came when we started listening to voices that were not necessarily loving or protective, but simply older, independent and a bit dangerous. We may have learned that following their example could lead to trouble.

As adults we need to understand that we still choose the voices we listen. It is always good when the voice of the Lord is familiar and one that we truly listen for. We can pretend we do not hear the familiar voice of the Good Shepherd and convince ourselves that the “voices we do not know” are good voices and get ourselves into trouble. Jesus tells us that he came so that we might have life and have it more abundantly. How do we

know that we are living life as Jesus desires for us? Our life is but the answer to this question. We can be faithful to our commitments as husbands, wives, employees and friends, or we can jeopardize these commitments because we listen to voices that call us to some very adult “danger.” Are we being faithful followers of Jesus?

This week we can examine the voices that we listen to and strengthen our bond with Jesus – the Good Shepherd. We can examine how we are living and look to what changes do we seek during this Easter season? We can proclaim the Resurrection of Jesus by the way we live our lives and by the example we set for others to follow. Have a good week!

Peace, Fr. Chris

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The reception of Holy Communion at Sunday Mass is such an expected feature of the Mass these days that it is surprising to realize that for many centuries, receiving Communion was a relatively rare event in the life of a faithful Christian. “Easter duty” means that Catholics must celebrate reconciliation if aware of serious sin, and receive Holy Communion during the Easter season. For a while, this was a requirement of Easter week, and later extended to the whole season of fifty days, and even beyond that by a few weeks. For the majority of people long ago, this meant Communion was a once-a-year moment. A rather complex bureaucracy grew up around this rule in the Middle Ages. Amazingly, people received a kind of token at confession admitting them to Communion in their home parish, which then kept careful records and reported them to the bishop. Surviving records can tell us a great deal about our ancestors. In fact, people were encouraged to journey to the church of their baptism in order to fulfill their duty, and therefore the Easter duty includes in its origins a grateful pilgrimage to the font in which you were first embraced by Christ. If your “Holy Mother Church” is within a drive, why not make a pilgrimage to that font a feature of your Easter celebration of these fifty days?

St. Justin Scripture Study began a new study on

Thursday May 2nd. We will begin Acts: The Spread of

the Kingdom, by Jeff Cavins.

The Acts of the Apostles shows the Church, enlivened by the Holy Spirit, teaching, preaching, healing, and restoring outcasts in the same way that Jesus did on earth. It provides a historic framework for understanding the rest of the New Testament. Paul’s letters come alive in a new way when they are read within the context of the Acts narrative. You will learn how the Gospel witness spread outward in waves, from Jerusalem to Judea and Samaria, and finally to the ends of the earth. Share with the early Christians the joys and struggles of living the life of Christ, and learn how these apply to us today.

We meet from 10:00am to 11:30am in the PMC. The cost of the study is $30. for the study guide. All are welcome no matter where you are in your faith journey or scripture study experience. For more information contact Mary Kane, [email protected].

If your anniversary is coming up, please let us know!

Laura Ortiz at 296-1193 ext. 102 or [email protected]

Our retired diocesan priests continue to impact the lives of thousands each and every year!

These men of God celebrate Mass, administer the sacraments, and walk with us still. Our Diocesan priests have given us decades of faithful service, receiving modest compensation for their work.

Many of priests continue their ministry for years after retirement, assisting in parishes with weekend liturgies, hearing confessions, and visiting the sick.

These priests rely on their payments from Social Security and the Priest Retirement Plan for their needs. In

recent years the number of retired priests has grown significantly to 44, challenging the diocesan retirement resources.

Therefore on Good Shepherd Sunday, May 12, each parish will take up a second collection at Mass for the new Diocesan Priests Retirement Appeal. You may wish to make a gift by going to www.dsj.org/priests-retirement.

Your generosity to this appeal helps us keep an important promise of care to these priests who have been good Shepherds and have kept their promises to us.
