The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

It is no wonder that followers of Christ are called the Body of Christ. After all, sharing in the same spiritual food and sacred meal, they become what they eat and reveal the Divine Image. There is so much power for healing in the community of believers. Through the Eucharist, Christ becomes as present in those who have partaken of his Body and Blood as he has the elements themselves. The very presence of God touches the depths of the human soul and visits a part of us that no human being can ever hope to explore. We are God’s. The sacred Eucharistic meal is a celebration of intimacy, the reunion of two loves in constant search of and longing for the other. The community of believers receives the power and the presence to touch and heal in the name of the One they have welcomed within. It is now within their grasp to change the way life is lived and to more intentionally put into practice the Beatitudes that the Divine Guest has revealed. We are asked to be like Christ and work to create a world of sufficiency, where the greed of some no longer creates the want of others but where all of God’s children can find a home and a place at the table of life. The One who makes a home within calls us to live a life that transforms. We are changed ourselves and now become agents of change for others. We are the Body of Christ. God is with us. We have been nourished. Sadly, many are afraid to try. We know what we are called to do, but we struggle with feelings of doubt as to whether God really is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Do our systems have to change? Is it possible that we somehow missed the mark when we put all of our social networks in place and established the business of our lives? Perhaps we have to radically rethink our approach and that can scare us. We might have to give something up or change, and we don’t want to. As long as want, injustice, division, prejudice, and scarcity still exit, there is tremendous work for the Body of Christ.

FROM FATHER KEVIN

Dear Parishioners, We will safely open up our parish a bit more beginning Monday June 15. Adoration and Eucharistic Exposition Monday – Friday from 9am to 2pm:

At the end of the 8:30 morning Mass, I will place the monstrance on the altar.

If there is no one present after your prayer time, please open the wooden doors, place the monstrance in front of the tabernacle and close the wooden door. Do not open the tabernacle. There will be sanitizer available to sanitize your hands before and after you touch the monstrance.

If the monstrance is not on the altar when you come, please sanitize and then place the monstrance on the altar.

At 2pm the parish staff will repose the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle.

For the foreseeable future we will only have Adoration during office hours, 9am to 2pm.

Sacrament of Reconciliation on Saturday 4:00 to 4:30pm in school:

We will use the classroom closest to Lambur Hall as a Reconciliation room. It will be set up much like the Reconciliation rooms in the church with the penitent’s option of kneeling at the screen or sitting facing the priest.

Please enter by the Lambur Hall doors. Walk to the school hallway in the back. We will have few chairs properly spaced for those waiting for confession.

You may continue to make an appointment at church for Confession during the week.

Thanks to all for your continued prayers and care for one another during this difficult time in our society. Remember to pray for those suffering in so many ways today. Remember the peace Christ gives us. Extend that peace to all you meet and all you tweet.

Thank you for your continued generous financial support of our parish mission and our church renovations.

Peace, Fr Kevin

Please see the excerpt from St. Justin Martyr’s Teaching on the Eucharist on the second last page of the bulletin.

Capital Projects

The work in the church continues. The painting is completed. New chairs are on order. The design color board is on display in the church. You can stop in to see the progress whenever the church is open.

In addition to the church interior work we now have three other capital projects ongoing. The old telephone system, after decades of good service, finally needed to be replaced. A section of the church roof behind the altar also needs repair. Our computer system needs improved wireless service capabilities.

We plan to use some of the funds from the Church Endowment to pay for these projects. The total cost will be close to $240,000. If you wish to make an additional contribution to help with them, you can use the endowment envelope in the monthly packet or send the check with a note: Endowment Fund.

Prayer During A Health Crisis Compassionate and Loving Father,

in the face of confusion and concern impart to us the calm of your presence. You allow us to find hope and healing.

Be with those who serve the sick and give them Your caring hands,

be with those lead and give them Your Spirit of wisdom.

Be with those who have fallen ill and give them Your comforting heart.

Wrap your arms around our world and hold us in your love. All us at this time of trial

to then serve as instruments of that love to all we me.

We ask this in Your Name. Amen.

Don’t forget to fly your flag for Flag Day, a celebration of the adoption of the American flag by Continental Congress in the First Flag Resolution of June 14, 1777.

Flag Day was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's proclamation, it was not until August 3, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

St. Justin’s Feast Day was June 1. Below are excerpts from the Teachings of St. Justin on the Eucharist.

The apostles, in their recollections, which are called Gospels, handed down to us what Jesus Commanded them to do. They tell us that He took break, Gave thanks and said: Do this in memory of me. This is my body. In the same way He took the cup, He gave thanks and said: This is my blood. The Lord gave this command to them alone. Ever since then we have constantly reminded one another of these things. The rich among us help the poor and we are always united. For all that we receive we praise the Creator of the universe through His Son, Jesus Christ and through the Holy Spirit. On Sunday we have a common assembly of all our members, whether they live in the city or in the outlying districts. The recollections of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read, as long as there is time. When the reader has finished, the president of the assembly speaks to us; he urges everyone to imitate the examples of virtue we have heard in the readings. Then we all stand up together and pray. On the conclusion of our prayer, bread and wine and water are brought forward. The president offers prayers and gives thanks to the best of his ability, and the people give their assent by saying, "Amen." The Eucharist is distributed, everyone present communicates, and the deacons take it to those who are absent.

The wealthy, if they wish, may make a contribution, and they themselves decide the amount. The collection is placed in the custody of the president, who uses it to help the orphans and widows and all who for any reason are in distress, whether because they are sick, in prison, or away from home. In a word, he takes care of all who are in need.

We hold our common assembly on Sunday

because it is the first day of the week, the day on

which God put darkness and chaos to flight and

created the world, and because on that same day

our Savior Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

For He was crucified on

Friday and on Sunday He

appeared to his apostles and

disciples and taught them

the things that we have

passed on for your

consideration.

No one may share the

Eucharist with us unless he

believes that what we teach

is true, he is washed in the

regenerating waters of

baptism for the remission of

his sins and unless he lives

in accordance with the

principles given us by Christ.

We do not consume the

Eucharistic bread and wine

as if it were ordinary food

and drink, for we have been taught that as Jesus

Christ our Savior became a man of flesh and

blood by the power of the Word of God, so also

the food that our flesh and blood assimilates for

its nourishment becomes the flesh and blood of

the incarnate Jesus by the power of His own

words contained in the prayer of thanksgiving.

Teachings of St. Justin on the Eucharist

Today, Corpus Christi is a doctrinal feast established in honor of Christ present in the Eucharist. Its purpose is to instruct the people in the mystery, faith, and devotion surrounding the Eucharist. The celebration of the feast evolved during the 13th and 14th centuries. The Berengarian heresy of the mid-11th century (named after Berengar of Tours) taught that the Eucharist was only the figure of Christ. By the 13th century reception of communion was less emphasized and was to some extent superseded by merely seeing the Host. In 1209 Juliana of Liege had a vision which demanded a feast specifically for the Eucharist. After much persuasion the feast was celebrated for the first time in 1247, and Pope Urban IV extended it to the Universal Church in 1264.
