St. Justin Martyr

Fifth Sunday

of Easter

When earthly lives end, especially when the person is younger, we tend to focus upon and consider what was lost. We think of lost opportunities — things they won’t be able to see, babies they won’t

be able to cradle, and adventures that now must go undiscovered. Our minds create this chasm between earth and heaven that sees the losses of this life as permanent ones, never possible to achieve again. This perception causes many folks to remain stuck in their grief as they ponder all of the missed opportunities and regrets. This is not resurrection thinking. All of the love that we can give and receive, the joy and elation that can be experienced, the adventures that can be undertaken, and the possibilities to be discovered are all part of a continuous journey. They are not ends in and of themselves but are all part of the unfolding of a relationship we have with God, who not only makes all of these wonderful things possible now but sustains them and fulfills them into eternity. The perception and experience of loss is really an illusion, because in God’s eternal kingdom and in God’s time, nothing is ever lost. Even the most intimate and tender of moments we can conceive of sharing with another human being are only part of a journey toward perfect intimate and tender moments to be shared with God in our resurrected life. We become like God and see God as He is in eternity. What greater joy, love, and hope can ever be discovered as we walk down our often dimly lit paths in this world. This is an awesome wonder and magnificent news to behold. Call to mind someone you have lost in death. How do you see them now? How do you see yourself in heaven? Remind yourself, again, that God is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Our happiness is not going to be fully realized in this world, and there is nothing we can find here that cannot be found one hundred fold in eternity. It’s all about relationship, and not solely about the relationships we have with each other, ourselves, and the world in which we live. It’s about our relationship with God. If we realize how special that one relationship really is, then there is only one particular of heaven and life eternal that really matters: namely, that we fall into love eternal and discover truth. For when we finally close our eyes in death, then all will be well as long as we are with God. There are no losses, only gains. .

Dear Parishioners As Catholics on Mother’s Day, we are privileged to honor not only our own mothers, but also Mary, the Mother of God. Mary is honored as the model for faith who listens to the Word of God and acts on it. The New Catechism says: “Mary is mother wherever Jesus is Savior.”

Mary is also the Mother of the Church, our mother in faith. Salvation comes from God alone; but because we receive the life of faith through the church, she is our mother...it is the Church that believes first, and so bears, nourishes and sustains my faith. Everywhere, it is the Church that first confesses the Lord. With her and in her, we are won over and brought to confess: I believe, I believe.”

The church refurbishing is continuing. The pews have been cleaned and refinished. They are in the gallery and some have been moved to the school to allow easier access for the rest of the work. The painters have washed all the surfaces and are doing the preparation work before painting will begin.

In addition to the church interior work we have two other capital projects ongoing. The old telephone system, after decades of good service, finally needed to be replaced. A section of the church roof behind the altar also needs repair.

We plan to use some of the funds from the Church Endowment to pay for these projects. The total cost will be close to $234,000. If you wish to make an additional contribution to help with them, you can use the endowment envelope in the monthly packet or send the check with a note: Endowment Fund.

I want to thank you for your continued financial support of the parish mission. Life does go on. Many people contact the parish for normal church business. We are also handling a greatly increased number of calls for Helping Hands assistance. So, as individuals and as a parish we are growing in faith, praying for all and serving as Jesus did.

Peace, Father Kevin

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults—RCIA

Becoming Catholic

Even though the RCIA process is on hold throughout the diocese and here at St. Justin, we are still blessed with several people preparing to receive Initiation Sacraments. While it is unsure when candidates will enter the church, they still need our prayers and support. Morgyn McCalligan will be completing her full initiation as a Catholic by receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation and Hoy Eucharist. Tim Rosian and Phillip Bowser will make their Profession of Faith, be received into the Church, and participate in the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. Kaylee Datz will receive all three Sacraments of Initiation; Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. And four members of the Argenti Family will become Catholics through the Sacraments of Initiation: Lynn, Elizabeth, Caitlin and Cecelia. Please pray for and encourage all those preparing to be fully united with Christ and His Church.

Today is Mother’s Day, we all remember our mother’s in different ways. Here are some prayers for our mothers in those stages.

For our mother’s that are with us …. A Prayer in Gratitude for Our Mothers Good and Gentle God, we pray in gratitude for our mothers and for all the women of theory who have joined with you in the wonder of bringing forth new life. You who became human through a woman, grant to all mothers the courage they need to face the uncertain future that life with children always brings. Give them the strength to live and to be loved in return, not perfectly, but humanly. Give them the faithful support of husband, family and friends as they care for the physical and spiritual growth of their children. Give them joy and delight in their children to sustain them through the trials of motherhood. Most of all, give them the wisdom to turn to you for help when they need it most. Amen. - Author Unknown For our mother’s that are no longer with us… Lord Jesus, you humbled yourself by becoming human and accepting death on the cross so that all who believe in you shall not perish but have eternal life. I thank you for my mother, for her love, for everything she gave me and taught me. While she is no longer with us in this life, she will live forever with you. I entrust my mother into your gracious care, and look to you with faith and hope for everlasting life, comfort me in my grief and pain. Until we are all united in your heavenly Kingdom, Amen By: Beth Rossetti For a special woman in our lives… Most Holy Mother of God, I ask you to watch over (name) who has given me so much motherly advice. She is such a special person to me. I look to her for guidance as your son looked to you. Give her the knowledge and wisdom to continue to guide me in my times of confusion. Bless her as the daughter of you Son and my friend, so that what she does will be guided by you. Amen. By: Beth Rossetti Confirmation Candidates - Please watch Project YM that happens via live stream on Sunday at 8PM. They’ve been showing some great speakers. Send me an email on your thoughts for worship and speakers. As of now our Confirmation Classes are cancelled until further notice. I’m not sure when we will resume or when our Confirmation will be. Most spring Confirmations are going to now take place in the fall, knowing that information I’m not sure what will happen to the fall Confirmations. When I am given updated information on this I will inform you. Please inform your sponsors of this.

May is the month of Mary and one of the most popular activities to venerate the Mother of God during this month is to participate in a May crowning ceremony. In addition to the Mother of God, Mary is also the Queen of Heaven and Earth, so we celebrate her Queenship by crowning her as our Queen.

Since we are prevented from having a public May crowning at the parish, we should turn to our domestic church, our homes, to celebrate this event. To help you with your celebration, I have provided a brief crowning liturgy that you can pray at home. All you will need is an image of Mary. This could be a statue or piece of Mary art. If you don’t have one, then you can always print one off the internet. You will also need a crown. There are many ideas on the internet, or you can be creative and come up with one on your own using things you have in your house.

We will also be celebrating the May crowning on May 12 at 7 PM during our Tuesday evening Rosary on Facebook Live. Please join me and we can crown our Mary’s together!

Crowning an Image of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Leader: Come, let us worship Christ, the Son of Mary.

Response: Let us give praise and thanks to the Lord as we keep this day in loving memory of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Leader: We gather today to crown this image of the mother of Jesus. As we acclaim Mary, the Mother of God, as our queen and as the Mother of the Church, let us imitate her example and be attentive to the Word of God. As we honor Mary, who is higher than the cherubim and yet like us, let us pray that through her intercession we may achieve holiness of life, and a deepened faith, hope, and love, as we seek to do the will of God in all things.

Leader: Father, as your Son was raised on the cross, his mother Mary stood by him, sharing his sufferings. May your Church be united with Christ in his suffering and death and so come to share in his rising to new life, where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

All Respond: Amen

Reading: John 19:25-27

Leader: Lord, we bless you, for you are full of mercy and justice. You humble the proud and exalt the lowly.

All: You gave us the highest example of your divine wisdom in the mystery of the Word made flesh and of his virgin Mother.

Leader: Your Son, humbled by death, rose glorious at your right hand, the King of all creation.

All: The Virgin, who acknowledged herself to be a servant, became the Mother of our Redeemer and of those reborn in her Son. Now, raised above the angels, she prays for all as the Queen of mercy and grace.

Leader: Bless us as we crown this image of the Mother of your Son.

All Respond: We confess Christ to be the King of creation and call upon Mary, our Queen. May we walk in their likeness, spending ourselves for the sake of others. Content with our place in this

Crowning. Place the crown on the image of Mary. If the image is of both Mary and the infant Jesus, the image of Christ is crowned before that of the Virgin Mary. As the image is crowned, pray a prayer to Mary (Suggestion: Hail Holy Queen, Three Hail Mary’s, Memorare, The Magnificat or any other suitable prayer).

Faith and Common Sense

(from The Catholic Response to an Epidemic)

Few things are more unnerving than the spread of a disease in epidemic or pandemic proportions. In such a time of uncertainty, it can be tempting to give in to fear and panic. A better response for Catholics, though, is one that if forward-thinking and based on reason, prudence, and reliance on God. Here are some suggestions for how to best respond to the threat of outbreak of any infectious disease: Plan Ahead Having a supply of essential items is a commonsense practice. Keep in mind those who are not able to take adequate precautions...check in on a neighbor who lives alone. Please respect all precautions put in place by the diocese and your parish. Commit yourselves to your own private prayer and unite yourself with Mass celebrated via internet or TV. Practice Prudence If you’re sick, stay home. Practice “social distancing”. Avoid nonessential travel and activities. Care for the Most Vulnerable Seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance for how you can best care for others...a card, a phone call, any safe means of communication will be most welcome. Care for the Sick If your prayer line is open at your church, make use of it. Pray daily for those in need. Care for the Common Good Avoid close contact with those who are sick Stay home when you are sick Cover your coughs and sneeze with a tissue Clean touched surfaces frequently Wash your hands often with soap and water Trust in God You may find yourself struggling with fear and anxiety. This is a natural reaction, but St. Paul reminds us, “have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” He assures us, “the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Jesus Christ.” With steadfast prayer and thanksgiving we do our best to put our trust in the Lord. Let our actions reflect the trust and peace that can only be found in him. Stay close to Jesus and the Blessed Mother in prayer, asking that those who are suffering from the disease or from any related anxiety may find healing and peace.
