ON HOPE Copyright 2016 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])

Thanks to a Christmas gift from my daughter--and because the AM radio in my car is still nonfunctional--I frequently listen to Sirius XM in my car. As I’ve written a couple of times in this space, I specifically listen on occasion to Station 128, Joel Osteen radio. Osteen is a preacher who pastors a megachurch out of Houston, and as he often says, “If you’re ever in our area, please stop by; I promise we’ll make you feel right at home.” I believe him when he says this, because he has an easy style and delivers an upbeat message, and he honestly sounds like the kind of guy who would make me feel right at home. I asked an evangelical friend a while back if he was an Osteen fan. The guy gave me an interesting response. He said he liked Osteen quite a bit as a motivational speaker, but not so much as a preacher. Perhaps one doesn’t make the other, but I don’t think the two are mutually exclusive, either. I was listening to one of Osteen’s messages recently and he was speaking of the Good News and the promises we hear spoken to us in Scripture, like, for example, that all things work together for the good for those who love God. So that bad medical report, that lost job, that failed relation-ship, that wayward child… While none of these are good in and of themselves, in totality--when all of the puzzle pieces are in place--the good is (or will be) revealed. Osteen often plays devil’s advocate to his own deliveries, challenging the message as if someone in the crowd is raising a flag of objection precisely in that moment. Things like, “Well, you say, ‘Joel, you just don’t know what I’m go-ing through…’’’ Or, “Well you say, ‘Joel, everything is coming against me right now…’” Or, “Well, you say ‘Joel, if only my wife treated me better…’” Such was the case one particular day when Osteen said, “Well, you say, ‘Joel - you’re just filling everyone with hope with talk like that.’” The challenge struck me, and Joel responded to it immediately with the very words I was thinking: “Of course, I am…” Right? I mean, if we don’t have hope, what do we have?

Osteen often quotes Scripture to make his point. I haven’t listened to him enough to know if he quotes today’s readings much, but I would-n’t be surprised, because they resonate with hope. From the first Book of Kings, we hear of Elijah’s hopeful prayer that life be restored to a widow’s son. “O Lord, my God, let the life breath return to the body of this child,” Elijah cries, and the child revives. Hope, realized. This account foreshadows the Gospel telling of Jesus who comes up-on a funeral procession near the city of Nain. Again, a widow’s son is gone. But moved by pity, Jesus touches the coffin and calls out, “Young man, I tell you, arise.” And the young man does. Hope, real-ized once more. Finally, Paul’s letter to the Galatians reminds us that from our mothers’ wombs, God has set us apart and called us through his grace to know Jesus the Christ. Hope. It feeds/sustains/anchors us. I’m no Joel Osteen, OK? But this should indeed make all of us feel right at home.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to our 8th Grade students who graduated from Christ Our Savior Catholic School on Friday, May 27. We are very proud of all of their accomplishments during the time they have spent with us. Some of our students have been with us for ten years! Some joined us just this past year. I truly believe that our graduates felt that we are all one family in Christ Our Savior. Special thanks to Father Ignatius (St. Jude the Apostle Parish) and Fr. Pat (Our Lady of Knock Church) who concelebrated our Graduation Mass.

CHRIST OUR SAVIOR GOES GREEN All students at Christ Our Savior received a pre-potted oak sapling tree from the Metropolitan Water Rec-lamation District of Greater Chicago. In conjunction with the "Restore the Canopy Plant a Tree Program,” families can enjoy the benefits of planting the oak sapling right on their own property. The Restore the Canopy initiative empowers the residents of Cook County with an oppor-tunity to restore our region's depleted tree canopy. The trees can also be used as a powerful and effective form of green infrastructure. Did you know that a medium size oak tree can help prevent flooding by absorbing 2,800 gallons of rainfall per year? Christ Our Savior is doing our part to help the local green environment!

SO LONG…… FAREWELL Our last day of class before the summer break will be Tuesday, June 7. Our school offices will remain open all during the summer months. If you know of someone who is interested in enrolling their child at a Catholic school, please share the good news of Christ Our Savior. We want to thank the parishioners of our six founding parish-es who have supported COS during the school year. We are SO GRATEFUL for your kind words, monetary and item donations and prayers. God bless you for your sup-port of Catholic education.

TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Today, the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we return to numbered weeks rather than seasons or solemnities. We are told stories of two widowed mothers whose only sons have died. They find themselves grief-stricken and alone. Jesus was himself the only son of a widowed mother so his compassion for the grieving mother described in Luke is especially poignant. What is perhaps surprising is that it takes something as catastrophic as the loss of a son and his restoration for the mothers and the crowd to recog-nize that God is in their midst. Through their personal experience of death and resurrection, they recognize God, but a God who had always been present to them, even from their mother's womb. Today's readings ask us how we recognize God in the face of terrible loss and suffer-ing. GOD IN OUR MIDST In our reading from First Kings, Elijah visits the house of a widowed mother whose only son falls ill and dies. Elijah, calling upon God, restores life to her son. The grieving mother recognizes Elijah as a man of God only after he restores her son to life. In Galatians, Paul fails to recog-nize God in his presence even as he is persecuting and trying to destroy those who follow Christ. Through God's grace, Jesus Christ is revealed to Paul, who then pro-claims that reality. In Luke, another widowed mother's son has died and is restored to her through the compas-sion of Jesus. In each instance, God is there, with the mothers and with Paul, waiting to be recognized. God is only recognized, however, when what is most precious, most beloved, most central to the life of each person has been lost and restored, has died and been resurrected. TURNING MOURNING INTO DANCING These readings tell the all-too-familiar story of loss and death. Each also tells of resurrection, life restored. Death and darkness transform our lives in profound and terrible ways. But our faith promises us that there is a dawn, a resurrection when we will rejoice. There is a time when our mourning will be transformed into dancing. These readings remind us that we can choose the time of rejoic-ing and dancing because it is with us now, even as death, despair, and darkness seem to overwhelm us. God is in our midst if only we will recognize the light, the joy, the dance that is present in our lives and within our world. If we choose the darkness, then we will not recognize the presence of God. If we choose to rejoice and dance even in the face of loss and death, then will our mourning be transformed. Then will we know God in our midst. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Company
