St Mary MacKillop is Australias first saint and she was canonised on 17 th October 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. Her way of living and responding to the Gospel message of love – Never see a need without trying to do something about it.provides a tangible model for us as we also try to live each day and Make Jesus Realin our lives too. Feast of St Mary MacKillop of the Cross – 8 th August Most loving God, we thank you for the example of St Mary MacKillop, who in her living of the Gospel, witnessed to the dignity of each person. She faced lifes challenges with faith and courage. Inspired by her example, may we be led by Your Spirit, to reach out to our brothers and sisters. Dear Parents and Guardians We had a beautiful celebration this morning for the

Feast of St Mary MacKillop. Our students prepared carefully for their Readings and helped to create a very joyful and reverent Eucharistic celebration for this special Feast Day. St Mary MacKillop is Australia’s first saint and she was canonised on 17th October 2010 by Pope

Feast of St Mary MacKillop of the Cross – 8th August Most loving God, we thank you for the example of St Mary

MacKillop, who in her living of the Gospel, witnessed to the dignity of

each person. She faced life’s challenges with faith and courage.

Inspired by her example, may we be led by Your Spirit, to reach out to our brothers and sisters.

Give us generous hearts to respond to the cries of those who are poor in our community and in our world.

We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our year six students, in particular, are striving to demonstrate the values of compassion, justice and love through the Christian Service projects they have been working on as part of their preparation to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation; we encourage them to try to take and accept some personal responsibility for making a difference in our world. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be conferred by Bishop Sproxton at St Jude’s Church on Sunday 13th August at 9 am. I hope you can join us for this very special and important school and parish celebration for our students. SCIENCE NEWS

The Science Week theme this year is ‘Future Earth’. Students are exploring different topics in STEM.

Year 5 and 6 are learning about the United Nations Sustainability Goals and how everyone needs to help to achieve these goals. There are 17 goals that 193 countries around our world have pledged to help solve by the year 2020.

My goal is number 4 in the UN Sustainability Goals. This goal is about Education for all and how education is not fair all over the world. In other countries, boys are educated but not girls, and in some countries children can’t go to school because they have to work to get food. (Delphine)

We have been learning about the sustainability goals. I am learning about Goal 5 which is Gender Equality. This goal is all about making everything fair for each other, no matter if you are a boy or a girl. In some countries if you do not obey you could be punished. (Mani)

I have been looking at sustainability goal number 11 – Sustainable cities and communities. We are trying to make committees and cities more sustainable and work on lower developed communities and help them become more sustainable. (Tharnish)

I am looking at goal number 5 which is Gender equality. Girls are treated unfairly throughout the world, because of their gender. A reason why girls are treated unequally is that some people think it is ok and believe that they can say mean stuff to girls. In some cultures girls do most of the work and they don’t get to go school. (Gracie)

The goal I am doing is goal number 13 – Life Under Water. Our marine life underwater is very precious and it is being ruined. We have to help keep it clean and safe so that it will be there in the future. (Eileen)

The goal I am doing is number 5 – gender equality. In a lot of places around the world, men are treated much better than women and it is very unfair. People should be doing all they can to help create an equal world, where people’s difference don’t stop them from doing things. (Anna)

The students in Year 3 and 4 are learning about sustainability and what we can do to help those less fortunate than themselves. They have been exploring water conservation, soil conservation, better health for all, better food production and different ways we can use energy to

make our world a better place. They are creating brochures and trioramas to show their learning.

Please save our energy resources for future people. If you save energy, future people will thank us. (Ethan)

If we don’t conserve water the earth will die and the animals will die like the earth. (Jennifer)

Save energy in the home by turning off heaters and coolers when you are not using them. (Edna)

Use less water when you have a shower. Use less water when you are washing your hands at the tap, sink and bathroom. (Joshua W)

We will suffocate with too much carbon dioxide. We are cutting down all of our trees and they help us to have clean air. (Fred)

You need water to survive. We need to look after our water by not polluting our earth and using less of the water we have (Jasmin)

Saving water in the ocean, we can stop using plastic bags and throwing them away. We can stop putting plastic bottles in the ocean. We should save plastic and make new things out of them. (Mary-Jane)

In some places in our world, Health is a problem. People are getting sick from diseases and scientists don’t know how to help them. Some people have poor health because they don’t have good food and clean water. (Mishel and Destiny)

The Year 2’s have been learning how they can help our planet in simple ways. Here are some of their thoughts.

I can help the world by taking quicker showers. (Miley)

I can help the world by making our world clean. (Risharb)

I can help the world by having a little bath. (Keshori)

I can help the world by throwing rubbish away

(Blayze)

I can help the world by taking little showers. (Jathu)
