God Bless You, Deacon Jack [email protected]

Q: Why are some churches called cathedrals?A: There are actually several church classifications. They are not based on size or architecture. They also do not represent the type of faith community as conveyed by the terms such as monastic or monastery

1. Cathedral: The Catechism defines a cathedral as the official church of the bishop of a diocese. The Greek word cathedra means chair or throne, the bishop’s “chair” symbolizes his teaching and governing authority, and is located in the principal church or “cathedral” of the local diocese of which he is the chief pastor. The Cathedral for the local church, the Diocese of Orlando, is St James in downtown Orlando. Our Eparchy’s cathedral, Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Cathedral, is located in Brooklyn NY. 2. Basilica: A title assigned by formal concession or immemorial custom to certain more important churches, in virtue of which they enjoy privileges of an honorific character. Basilicas are divided into two classes, the greater or patriarchal, and the lesser, basilicas. Major: To the former class belong primarily those four great churches of Rome…which among other distinctions have a special “holy door” and to which a visit is always prescribed as one of the conditions for gaining the Roman Jubilee. They are also called patriarchal basilicas, representative of the great ecclesiastical provinces of the world thus symbolically united in the heart of Christendom. They possess a papal throne and an altar at which none may say Mass except by the pope’s permission. Minor: The lesser basilicas are much more numerous, including nine or ten different churches in Rome, and a number of others, such as the Basilica of the Grotto at Lourdes. Two basilicas we are familiar with here in the United States are the National Shrine at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC; and recently the Shrine of Our Lady Queen of the Universe, near Disney has been name a basilica. Besides conferring precedence before other churches (not, however, before the cathedral of any locality), include the right of the conopaeum, the bell, and the cappa magna. The conopaeum is a sort of umbrella (also called papilio, sinicchio, etc.). Next time you visit the shrine, facing the altar, look to the left lector stand (the Gospel ambo). You will see a type of semi-folded umbrella (yellow and white) behind the ambo. This is the conopaeum. 3. Chapel: The basic definition of a Chapel is an informal Church or a room containing a small side altar. 4. Oratory: As a general term, Oratory signifies a place of prayer, but technically it means a structure other than a parish church, set aside by ecclesiastical authority for prayer and the celebration of Mass. 5. Parish Church: A Church under the authority of a priest or assigned administrator legitimately appointed to secure in virtue of his office for the faithful dwelling therein. According to canon law, every church should have a stable

income, sufficient to insure not only the Divine services but also the support of its clergy. Our beautiful church here at St Jude is a parish church. 6. Crypt: An underground church, generally built among the dead. At first, crypts were sometimes underground similar to the catacombs. Some were partly above ground, lighted by small windows placed in their side walls. At times you will also hear of an Abbey or Priory. These were originally the seat of worship for a religious community. Abbeys were popular in Europe especially in England and France. An example is Westminster Abbey in London.

"Don't worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. Then, because you

belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel."

(Phil. 4:6,7).

which guides our steps in the night and suffices for

the journey.” Pope Francis

8TH WEEK OF PENTECOST

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS - Ninth Week of Pentecost 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:10 & Luke 4:14-21

Romans 8:1-11 - Hence, now there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has freed you from the law of sin and death. For what the law, weakened by the flesh, was powerless to do, this God has done: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for the sake of sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteous decree of the law might be fulfilled in us, who live not according to the flesh but according to the spirit. For those who live according to the flesh are concerned with the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit with the things of the spirit. The concern of the flesh is death, but the concern of the spirit is life

and peace. For the concern of the flesh is hostility toward God; it does not submit to the law of God, nor can it; and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you. Matthew 12:14-21 - But the Pharisees went out and took counsel against him to put him to death. When Jesus realized this, he withdrew from that place. Many (people) followed him, and he cured them all, but he warned them not to make him known. This was to fulfill what had been spoken through Isaiah the prophet: “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved in whom I delight; I shall place my spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He will not contend or cry out, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory. And in his name the Gentiles will hope.”

Divine Mercy Chaplet(How to say the Divine Mercy Chaplet)

Make the Sign of the CrossOpening Prayer: You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!

Say, Our Father, Hail Mary, Apostles Creed

On each Our Father Bead: Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

On each Hail Mary Bead: For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Conclude with: Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. (3 times)

POPE FRANCIS QUOTES“Ask yourselves this question: How often is Jesus inside and knocking at the door to be let out, to

come out? And we do not let him out because of our own need for security, because so often we are locked into ephemeral structures

that serve solely to make us slaves and not free children of God.”

“Faith is not a light which scatters all our darkness, but a lamp which guides our steps in the night and suffices for the journey. To those who suffer, God does not provide arguments which explain everything; rather, his response is that of an accompanying presence, a history of goodness which touches every story of suffering and opens up a ray of light.”

St. Maron was a 5th-century Syriac Christian monk whose followers, after his death, founded a religious Christian

movement that became known as the Maronites. The religious community which grew from this

movement is the Maronite Church.
