SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
What does it mean to be worthy? There are a few different
ways to approach this question. Today’s Gospel highlights
two: the way of the Pharisees and the way of John the
Baptist. Our faith values good works and discipleship.
Perhaps, then, we “earn” our worth by adhering to the right
doctrines and following the right pious practice. The
Pharisees thought they were worthy. Due to their religious
pedigree and proper procedures, they were self-satisfied.
John the Baptist’s words to them are strong. “Do not resume to
say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’” Of course,
Jesus (and John) don’t omit the responsibility for moral
behavior. John gives the Pharisees quite a strong warning in
that regard. “Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance …
every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into
the fire.”
It’s a question of attitude. Of disposition. It’s a matter of the
heart. If anyone would be worthy in this scenario, it’s John
the Baptist. Jesus himself will name him the greatest of
prophets and a great man. John, however, recognizes his
own lowly place in the grand scheme of things. “The one who
is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his
sandals.” The Pharisees take pride in being “better” than
others. John embraces humility in Christ being “better” than
him. We don’t self-generate our own worthiness. We receive
it as a gift from God.
In a few short weeks, we’ll celebrate the birth of Christ.
Bishop Ven. Fulton Sheen wrote about the Nativity in his
“Life of Christ”: “Because [Jesus] was born in a cave, all who
wish to see Him must stoop. To stoop is the mark of
humility. The proud refuse to stoop and, therefore, they miss
divinity.” God invites us to prepare our hearts this Advent.
When you consider your own life, where are you looking for
your worth? This Christmas, are you prepared to stoop?

THE SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
The Solemnity of the Immaculate
Conception while traditionally
recognized on December 8, this year
the Church recognizes the feast on
Monday, Dec. 9.
An essential part of God’s plan for the
mother of his Son was that she be
conceived free from Original Sin. “Through the centuries the
Church became ever more aware that Mary, ‘full of grace’
through God, was redeemed from the moment of her
conception” (CCC, no. 491).
In anticipation that she was to bear the Son of God, Mary was
preserved from the time of her conception from Original Sin.
We call this the Immaculate Conception. No sin would touch
her, so that she would be a fitting and worthy vessel of the
Son of God. The Immaculate Conception does not refer to
the virginal conception and birth of Christ, but rather to
Mary’s being conceived without inheriting Original Sin. In the
course of time, the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception
became more precisely enunciated, as its truth— long
supported by the universal popular devotion of the faithful—
was better understood by deepening theological inquiry.
In 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed this dogma infallibly: that is,
in his role as supreme teacher of the Church, he declared that
this doctrine is divinely revealed and must be accepted with
faith by the entire Church. (Source: USSCB Catholic Current )
Please note for 2019: Per guideline from the Catholic Diocese of Dallas,
“when December 8th falls on a Sunday, the Solemnity of the Immaculate
Conception is transferred to Monday. While the day remains a solemnity,
the faithful are not obligated to attend Mass.”

For Sisters Florence and de Lourdes and 30,000 other senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests who benefit from the Retirement Fund for Religious - service is a way of life. Most ministered in Catholic schools, hospitals, parishes, and social service agencies, usually for little or no pay. Today, hundreds of religious communities lack adequate savings for retirement and eldercare. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious offers vital support for necessities, such as medications and nursing care.
Please be generous. Donation envelopes are available in the Business Office or at Masses on Dec. 7-8. For more information go to https://retiredreligious.org/ .
Bernardine Franciscan Sisters Florence Kruczek (right), 91, and Sister de Lourdes Okoniewski, 87, each entered religious life in the 1940s, barely out of high school. For decades, prayer and teaching filled their days. Yet a lifetime of serving others has only increased their own gratitude.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS CHRISTMAS POSTER CONTEST In a society where Christmas has become for many - especially children - a secular holiday, the Knights of Columbus has introduced the Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest to allow young people to understand the true, spiritual meaning of Christmas and to engage their creative talents and imaginations.
C O N T E S T R U L E S :
The contestants will be separated into three age categories. Age 5-7, Age 8-10, and Age 11-14.

FAITH IN ACTION
People Helping People Ministry requests donations of BLANKETS to help those in need this winter season.
Please call the Church office or
email [email protected] to donate.
The St. Jude Toolbox ministry took on a large project for
their major handicap ramp build November 23. We had
9 volunteers (our largest turn out yet) so we went for a big
one. We began by removing an old, worn out, too steep
ramp for the client, no small project in itself. Then we
built a 44 foot ramp to enable her to be more independent
and lessen the burden on her family. The client was so
grateful as seen with her family in the picture. It was very
rewarding to be able to help them and a good time was had
by all. If you would like to serve in this ministry or just to
come out and help us with a future ramp, contact Jerry
Vaughan at [email protected].
The Toolbox Ministry volunteers were (from left to right): Tom Wolowicz, Bob Brown, Mike Steffens,
Ken Williams, Ray Tranka, Joe Ragusa, Jerry Vaughan, Chuck Pilch and Dave Banowetz.

The Knights of Columbus will be selling tamales after all the Masses on Dec. 14-15 weekend. In Texas, it wouldn't be Christmas without tamales. The corn masa and meat bundles - individually wrapped in corn husks and then steamed, are part of the traditional Mexican celebration of Las Posadas, which commemorates Mary and Joseph's search for shelter before the birth of Jesus on Christmas Eve. Tamales per dozen – Pork $12 and Beef $13.

Intro to The New Evangelization
Mondays, Beginning January 6, 2020
7:00 pm, Formation Room
This course will demonstrate that the church’s
New Evangelization is grounded in the celebration
of its liturgy. Pastoral ministers will seek responses to questions
that promote the renewal of the assembly, and envision
possibilities for attracting those who are not regular worshippers.
Evangelization is planting the seed, and discipleship is growing the
tree. This is part of the University of Dallas Pastoral Ministry
Certification Program. The cost for each class is $50.00. Course
details and registration is online at https://udallas.edu/ministry/
academics/continuinged/pastoralministry_certificate/.
