On the Monday prior to Super Bowl Sunday, California Knights of Columbus as well as representatives from the Supreme Counciljoined Football Hall of Famers Anthony Munoz (Cincinnati Bengals) and Dave Casper (Oakland Raiders), Raiders Head Coach JackDel Rio and his wife Linda, as well as several current NFL players and coaches to distribute coats to the students at an inner-cityCatholic grammar school in San Francisco.

More than 270 students at Our Lady of the Visitation school received new coats as part of this event sponsored by the Knights ofColumbus, Catholic Athletes for Christ, the Raiders Foundation, the Jack and Linda Del Rio Foundation and the Munoz Foundation.Among the Knights of Columbus attending the event were members of Church of the Visitation Council 12683, Supreme AdvocateJohn Marrella, Supreme Director Jim Scroggin, California State Deputy Ed Huestis and Past State Deputy Ray Warriner.

"It's a great blessing for young people to see these outstanding professional athletes and coaches, who have competed successfullyin the NFL, and who are not ashamed to say that the most important thing in their life is their faith in Jesus Christ. By sponsoring thisevent, the Knights of Columbus can give the students and teachers at this school a clear picture of faith in action, as these athletesand coaches show what it really means to be a Christian man," said John Marrella, Supreme Advocate for the Knights of Columbus. Helping to distribute coats to the students were Oakland Raiders coaches Bill Musgrave, Ken Norton, Jr., Todd Downing, Nick Holz,Rob Moore, Sal Sunseri, Jake Peetz and Rod Woodson, along with Raiders players Austin Howard, Taiwan Jones, Andre Holmes,George Atkinson III and Giorgio Tavecchio.

This winter, the Knights of Columbus distributed 78,576 coats in 1,600 communities throughout the U.S. and Canada, includingevents at military bases, in Native American communities, at inner-city neighborhoods and through partnerships with local police de-partments. District Deputys Message

    Brothers and Sisters,

It is February and what does February bring to mind? When I think of February, I thinkabout Washingtons and Lincolns Birthdays. I guess now its just Presidents day. Iremember being in school and always hearing the story of George Washington and thecherry tree and the old I cannot tell a lie when his father asked him about it. And of

course old Honest Abe Lincoln. Abe got his nickname because when he was a shopkeeper he once walked 10 miles to give a ladyback her change that she had mistakenly left behind on the counter. Do they still tell these stories to kids in school today? I certainlyhope so. I think its important for kids to hear them, to know and understand that there is nothing more important than to be honestand to be a person of integrity. I think they should go back to some of the old role models that kids had back in the day, like ourFounding Fathers. They certainly cant look up to the celebrities of today, or the sports stars like we used to. Theyre in the paperseveryday getting arrested and sometimes even worse.

February also brings to mind for some Valentines Day and candy and flowers and of course love. Where did the story of ValentinesDay begin? A popular account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers whowere forbidden to marry and I guess thats where the part about the love comes in. In the middle ages, it evolved into an occasion inwhich lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery and sending greeting cards (known as"valentines"). Throw in a naked little cherub (who doesnt love a naked cherub?) shooting arrows and the legend is complete.

Also this year Ash Wednesday is early, February 10th. We all know that Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season. It always falls 46 days before Easter. It was set as the first day of Lent by Pope St. Gregory the Great. The ashes used in this cere-mony are made by burning the remains of the palms blessed on the Palm Sunday of the previous year. In the blessing of the ashes

four prayers are used, all of them ancient. The ashes are sprinkled with holy water and fumigated with incense. Today we see Lentas a time of fasting , Pasta or Soup dinners on Friday nights at the Church or at our Councils and the occasional Fish Fry. All thesethings are a great way for us to gather together as Knights and Christians. But let us not forget that as we begin this holy season ofLent in preparation for Easter, we must remember the significance of the ashes we have received: We mourn and do penance forour sins. We again convert our hearts to the Lord, who suffered, died, and rose for our salvation. We renew the promises made atour baptism, when we died to an old life and rose to a new life with Christ Finally, mindful that as the kingdom of this world passesaway, we strive to live in the kingdom of God now and look forward to its fulfillment in heaven. So I wish you all a very joyous LentenSeason, and I look forward to us all renewing ourselves in the Lord together. God Bless and Keep you All.
