Your support is one of the most critical elements in helping our children and families grow and thrive.

Progress surrounds us every day at St. Joseph’s Villa. In just one year following our campus renovations, we are already seeing a tremendous return on investment in the Villa’s capacity to serve as an educational and therapeutic resource. Our children and families are connecting with the environment in brand new ways, and it is truly amazing to witness the discoveries they make about themselves and their world.
In the fall of 2012 we installed a state-of-the art outdoor learning and therapy garden with the support of our community partners. It has been a bright spot on our campus from day
one! Here, children and families can engage in activities that enhance their physical, mental and emotional health. Students with autism participate in sensory exercises using plant foliage. At-risk
youth learn patience and responsibility as they plant and tend to seasonal fruit and vegetables. Our culinary arts students harvest and cook with fresh ingredients straight out of the garden, learning valuable
job skills and healthy eating habits in the process. Needless to say, the garden is constantly full of life.
As our campus life continues to evolve, so do our programs in the community. This year Flagler Housing & Homeless Services completed its transition to an all rapid re-housing model. Under this new model we are serving three times as many families at just one-fourth of the cost, while continuing to provide integrated support services that will help them stay in their homes. Word of our early successes reached Governor McDonnell’s office and led the Villa to host his Road to Ending Homelessness press conference in June 2013.
These are just a few highlights of the year. We’re pleased to share more with you in the following pages of our Impact Report. None of our work would have been possible without the contributions of our partners and caring individuals like you.
Thank you for your support of St. Joseph’s Villa. You help us change lives from the ground up.
Sincerely,

Meghan’s kind-hearted, free spirit is plain to see from the moment
you meet her. As a student with autism, she touched the lives of her peers and counselors throughout her years at St. Joseph’s Villa. When it came time to prepare for the future, Meghan enrolled in our Career and Transition Services.
Thanks in part to the prior supports she received from
other Villa services, Meghan quickly demonstrated the ability
to work well with others. She experimented with a number of
on-campus job training opportunities before discovering her true passion–
culinary arts.
The Villa’s new Culinary Arts Center helped her develop the important interpersonal and kitchen skills she needed to excel in the field. After a successful internship at Positive Vibe Café, coordinated by our Career and Transition Services staff, Meghan was able to create her professional resume. She has since departed from the Villa to begin a new chapter in her life.
“I say thank you from the bottom of my heart for the people who taught me skills in life like cooking, budgeting, living, loving, and learning,” said Meghan.
Meghan’s journey at St. Joseph’s Villa was one that nourished her from the ground up and prepared her for a life of greater independence and a brighter future.
Cultivating Youth: Meghan Grows into Independence
Our Early Autism program is one of the first of its kind in Central Virginia to serve children ages 2 to 5 with a medical diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. All services are based in best-practice Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) methodology and supervised by a Doctoral Level Board Certified Behavior Analyst. A 1:1 staff-to-child ratio helps provide significant developments in language, learning, and social skills.

In 2013, Flagler Housing & Homeless Services completed its transformation into a full rapid re-housing program. The new direction came after participation in a successful three-year pilot program led by Homeward and funded by The Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia.
97% of those families housed during the pilot program have remained in their homes. The rapid re-housing approach prioritizes housing stability for individuals and families. We help those at-risk for or experiencing homeless find permanent housing in their own name–in many instances, within a matter of days. Once housed, they have access to integrated support services such as employment training, budgeting assistance, and mental health support.
Flagler Housing & Homeless Services became known as one of the area’s leading experts in rapid re-housing. Our Senior Director of Housing &
Homeless Services presented at the National Conference on Ending Family & Youth Homelessness, hosted in Seattle by the National Alliance to End Homelessness. In June, we hosted Governor Bob McDonnell’s Road to Ending Homelessness press conference on our campus, where he cited St. Joseph’s Villa as a leading contributor to the state’s 16% reduction in homelessness since 2010.
This year, the Housing Resource Center in Petersburg–operated by Flagler–served 155 households (399 individuals). In Richmond, Flagler served 119 households (341 individuals).

Our mentors provided more than 400 hours of service
to Villa students in 2013, helping them improve academic
achievement, behavior and self-confidence. Volunteering just
one hour a week can give a child the encouragement he or
she needs to build a brighter future. To learn more about
how you can become involved, please contact our Villa Pals

Grounding Ourselves with Nature Villa Learning and Therapy Garden
transforms campus into learning lab
Dooley Elementary students used their new gardening skills to plant a vegetable and herb patch at Virginia’s Executive Mansion.
Dominion volunteers constructed an outdoor classroom next to the garden, completing the state-of-art space for environmental learning.
Participants of our Career and Transition Services learn to cook from plant to plate with ingredients grown in the garden.
The varied textures, sights and smells of garden foliage provide sensory stimulation for children with developmental disabilities.
Our children and families take ownership of the garden and give care to the vegetation.
8
The garden is a dynamic shared space for everyone we serve. Children and
families gather here to engage in activities that contribute to their overall
physical, mental, and emotional health. Come see what we’re growing now–
it changes every season!
Thanks to supportive partnerships with Altria, Greater Richmond Fit4Kids, HandsOn Greater Richmond, Backyard Farmer, Dominion Resources and the Lipman Foundation, St. Joseph’s Villa now features a new garden for educational and therapeutic activities.
More than 80 volunteers from these groups came together to build the garden in one day. The installation was swift, but the many lessons that the garden teaches to our children and families will last lifetimes.
What’s in our garden? 10 raised beds for crops 2 large ADA accessible beds 2 sensory gardens Green garden tunnel Compost units Tool shed with rain catchment 25-seat outdoor classroom
The new garden was a harmonious addition to our campus following the Believing Is Seeing capital campaign. It builds on our efforts to maximize our natural spaces for learning and healing.

Transforming EducationOn March 15, 2013, St. Joseph’s Villa hosted the first day of the Natural Connections conference in partnership with Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and the Virginia Association of Science Teachers (Region 1). More than 100 PreK-5 educators from across the state participated in hands-on workshops about nature-based activities that can improve children’s cognitive development. In an era when curriculums are becoming increasingly designed around standardized tests, the conference gave a fresh take on using fruits of nature for teaching a variety of life lessons. Natural Connections was sponsored in part by Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation.

The Archway SocietyA Distinctive Recognition of Friends
who have included St. Joseph’s Villa or St. Joseph’s Villa Foundation
in their Estate Plans
Archways are ever-present throughout the campus of St. Joseph’s Villa. The historic structures they support have stood the test of time, as has our commitment to helping children and families in the greatest need.
The Archway Society honors friends whose estate plans provide strong and enduring support for children, youth, adults and families to pass safely from lives shaped by homelessness, autism, physical and developmental disabilities, mental illness and behavioral disorders to futures of greater stability, independence, self-confidence and hopefulness.
If you have included the Villa or Villa Foundation in your estate plans, please join the Archway Society by notifying us with the enclosed envelope, calling 804-200-1616 or emailing [email protected]. Those considering such provisions are encouraged to contact us for conversation and helpful information. When people hear planned giving, they often think bequests, but there are other methods that can create tax or estate advantages for donors.
We thank the following members of the Archway Society who are known to us:

You Change Lives from the Ground UpSt. Joseph’s Villa will serve more than 2,100 children and families this year facing autism, mental health issues, homelessness and other challenges. They count on your support as they work with us to reach brighter futures.
The New Day Fund touches each child and family we serve who is in need of a new beginning. A new day came for five-year-old Matthew with autism, after receiving services through our In-Home Behavioral Treatment program. For two years, Matthew received 1:1 support from a professional clinician to help improve his communication, lessen his aggressive
behaviors, and enhance his verbal skills.
Donate to the New Day Fund, the Annual Fund of St. Joseph’s Villa
At first, Matthew would regularly engage in hostile behaviors that included hitting, kicking, and biting out of frustration from his inability to express himself. The care Matthew received from the Villa included best practice strategies for children with autism that allowed him to grow and succeed. Because of Matthew’s time with the Villa, he is now prepared to begin Kindergarten at his home school–something that once seemed like a distant dream for Matthew and his mother.
Matthew experienced a new day in his life because of supporters like you. At the Villa we believe in the potential for growth in all of our children and families. Your support shows that you do, too.
Talk about transformation!
Gifts to the New Day Fund may be made through the attached envelope or through our website at NeverStopBelieving.org/NewDayFund. To learn more about how you can help, please call 200-1617.
