I. College Activities

a. Highlights:

“ Being a centre of Academic Excellence which Empowers Young Women to

provide Intellectual Leadership and Transform the world through Courage of

Conviction , Optimism and Hope” With this mission the student council for the year 2017-18 was nominated in the month of June

and on the inaugural day, in the presence of Mrs. Indira Tirumala Raju- registrar, P.F. office

Commissioner who was the chief guest for the day and other dignitaries, staff and students , our

principal Dr. Sr. Shyji handed over the badges to the office bearers and congratulated them stressing

the role of the student council. She also addressed the students and motivated them to endeavour to

make the college campus lively.

The annual activities of the student council recognizes the varied talents of our students. The

student council activities started with a spell bee competition and many more events followed like an

essay writing competition, dance, singing etc.

Teachers play a major role in making their students responsible citizens of tomorrow and good

human beings. Thus to show our acknowledgement and recognition of their hard work towards our

development, the student council on behalf of all the development, the student council on behalf of all

the students presented small tokens of love and respect to the teachers on teacher’s day.

Specific days like world literacy day, national education day, population day, tourism day ,

environment day have been celebrated by organising curricular and extracurricular events.

This year also witnessed the remarkable performance and participation of our students in

various inter collegiate competitions. Student council organized an inter college fest “ Excelsior-

2k17”in college premises and identified the talents of students inside and outside the campus.

ECO Buzz, the Economics department of the college conducted an Economics Quiz Contest

named ‘THE YOUNG ECONOMIST’where various colleges were invited for participation. We were

inundated by the response and participation of the students.

The academic year 2017-18 witnessed appreciable efforts by various departments in organizing

various activities. Various associations and clubs organised activities to bring out the hidden talents of

students from intermediate to post graduation level. Students enthusiastically participated and the

atmosphere was lively throughout the year.

Two staff members one from department of Botany and other from department of economics

received state best teacher awards .Faculty forum organized seminars and workshops to equip the

staff to face present day challenges along with academic programmes.

Department of physical education organised a two day seminar in the month of December in

college campus.

The Hindi department celebrated the ‘National Hindi week’ with the essence and elegance of the Hindi

language and culture The Home Science department organized ‘nutrition week’ and ‘handloom week’

Republic day, Independence day , Teachers day have been celebrated in the college campus.

century” in collaboration with Indian Federation of Computer Science in sports on 29th and 30th December

2017.Th33e Conference was inaugurated by the chief guest Prof.Uma Maheswara Rao – Registrar, Andhra

University, Visakhapatnam. Dr.Sr.Shyji P.D., Principal of the college presided over the function. Dr.Sheila Stephen,

Principal, Saveetha School of Physical Education, Saveetha University, Chennai was the Guest of Honour and also

I. Library Collection:

The Library has a collection of 30479 Books and 45 Journals and 30 Magazines. In the

year (2017-18) 278 books were bought. The library has access to E - Resources, of N- List (

National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content ),which is a part

of e shodhsindhu consortium Which Include E-Journals, E- Books and Bibliographic Database

which are available through of INFLIBNET Centre. 5211 Back volumes of journals provided.

414 CD’s are availaible. User orientation and information literacy programmes are given

regarding the various library activities and services. Library automation is done through

integrated library management software of SOUL (Software for University Libraries) where all

the housekeeping activities such as data entry of books, issue and return of books and OPAC

service is done through the software. Bar Coding of books is under Process.

Independence Day with reverence and enthusiasm. On this occasion students were proud to have in their midst

1. ‘International Yoga Day’ ,21-6-2017.

The NSS, NCC, Sports and Yoga wings of St. Joseph’s college for Women (Autonomous)

jointly observed ‘International Yoga Day’

2. ‘Vanam Manam’ a massive Plantation Programme , 7-7-2017.

In response to the call given by the AP State govt., to achieve ‘Haritandhra Pradesh’, we

organized a massive plantation programme in their premises as part of ‘Vanam Manam’. All the

departments, clubs and associations of the college-Green Globe Nature Club, Eco Club, Biology

association, Eco Buzz, Commerce association ,Humanities association, Literary club, Shrishti

club, Sports Department actively involved in the programme.

Department of Forests and Department of Social Forestry, Andhra Pradesh, Visakhapatnam

provided more than 100 saplings of timber, fruit and avenue trees such ad Rose wood, Red

Sander wood, Tebubia, Badam, Jamun, Indian goose berry, yegisa, yepi, maddi etc.

In view to keep the surroundings and the country clean and as part of Prime Minister Narendra

Modi’s Swatcha Bharath Mission initiative, ‘Swatchata Pakhwada’ a clean fortnight began. The

NSS Programme Officers Dr. K. Manikya Kumari and Dr. CH. Annapurna conducted a seminar

on the topic ‘Swatchata’ to create awareness about the cleanliness among the students and their

role in keeping the community clean. Addressing the gathering, the Guest speaker Mrs. Gnana

Prasuna, Lecturer in Economics, advised the NSS Volunteers to maintain the integrity and

cleanliness of the country as responsible citizens. Later, lead by Dr. Manikya Kumari along with

the Principal, students and faculty took ‘Swatcha Pledge’.

4. NSS Volunteers were trained in UNICEF Peer Leader Training Programme

A team of 12 students, participated in a three day ‘Peer Leader Training programme’ held jointly

by UNICEF and NSS Cell of Andhra University at Jubilee Seminar Hall with a theme to improve

the lives of adolescents in Visakhapatnam. The main focus of the programme was Adolescent

issues such as Child marriages, Child Labour, Child trafficking, Child abuse, Child rights and

Child protection. All the students were detailed on various issues of adolescence. They were

given training as how to take these issues into the community through activities of National

Service Scheme. During the training programme, the students were given tasks like group

discussions, skit play, extempore, poster making on different issues of adolescence

5. NSS Volunteers clean classrooms, laboratories, statues and college campus, 3-8-

2016.

As part of ongoing Swachhta Pakhwada, a fortnight cleanliness drive, the NSS Volunteers have

undertaken cleanliness drive in their College premises today. Students in big numbers

participated in this programme, dusted and cleaned classrooms, laboratories, library, play

ground, botanical garden and important prominent statues of the college and Gnanapuram area.

Later students reached to the Convent junction circle and cleansed the Ambedkar statue.

6. NSS Volunteers Protest against Liquor Shops on 4-7-2017.

In view of the prevailing liquor shops in the vicinity of several schools, colleges and residential

areas, we organised A PROTEST RALLY near Gnanapuram junction, nearly 15000 students

mostly girls from 3 colleges and 5 big schools, 3 churches, one destitute home and the resident

women are constantly been subjected to harassment, eve teasing and nuisance caused by the

drunkards since several years in this locality.

7. NSS unit Organized ‘World Population Day’ on 11-7-2017.

With growing concern over population explosion and problems associated with shrinking

resources to provide basic amenities to the people, organized an educational programme on

‘World Population Day’ .

8. ‘Hand wash and Disease Prevention’ awareness programme held on

25-9-2017.

In view of the increasing disease incidence in connection with unhygienic conditions and lack of

personal hygiene, the NSS Unit organised an awareness programme on ‘Hand wash and Disease

Prevention’ in their adopted village Sebastian colony, Gnanapuram. As per the instructions by

the central Govt. under ‘Swacchata Hi Seva’ and to commemorate NSS Day on 24th September.

9. Awareness program on Open defecation, infectious diseases and toilet

construction in Adopted Village ,9-8-2017.

As part of cleanliness fortnight the NSS Unit had organized an awareness program in their

adopted village Sebastian colony today on open defecation, construction of toilets and how to

maintain cleanliness in their surroundings to avoid infectious diseases..


10. NSS Unit -I took New India Manthan ‘Swaccha Pledge’ on 9-8-2017

As per the instructions from UGC and Central govt., on the occasion of the 70th Independence

day and to commemorate ‘Quit India movement’ all the students , faculty and non teaching staff

took a pledge to achieve New India, a country which is corruption free, terrorism free, caste free,

communalism free, socialist, secular and swachha Bharat.

11. International Youth Day celebrated with the theme ‘Young people should be

agents of change and Peace’,12-8-2017.

Young people are agents of change in conflict prevention and sustaining peace. International

Youth Day 2017 is dedicated to celebrating young people’s contributions to conflict

prevention and transformation as well as inclusion, social justice, and sustainable peace.,

where everyone was given chance to express their openion regarding the important issues of

now a day youth in the form of an extempore, opinion sharing, performing a skit or raising a

slogan etc. Dr. P. Jayalakshmi, HOD-Economics explained the students about 2030 Agenda

for Sustainable Development committed to fostering peaceful and inclusive societies. She

said that Goal 16 aims to ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative

decision-making at all levels. Dr. G. Ramalakshmi, HOD-Political Science said that even in

21st Century, there is gender discrimination and violence against women, especially young

women is prevailing rampantly. Later, a group of students lead by Divya of IIBSc performed

a skit on Child marriage and plight of a young widow which drew big attention and applause

from every one.

12. NSS Volunteers visited and organised Swachha programme at ‘Nirmal Hruday’, a

Mother Theresa Home for Destitutes,14-8-2017.

From August 1st onwards NSS Volunteers has been organising several awareness programmes on

cleanliness as part of Swachha Pakhwada, a cleanliness fortnight.

13. ‘Swachhata Pakhwada’ concludes on Independence Day, 15-8-2017

A fortnight long cleanliness drive ‘Swachhata Pakhwada’ a central government initiative was

taken up by the National Service Scheme (NSS) wing concluded on Independence Day .The

college Principal Dr. Sis. Shyji, in presence of Chief Guest Col. A. P. Rai, Group Commander

and Training Officer, NCC Head Quarters, Visakhapatnam, NSS Programme Officers Dr. K.

Manikya Kumari and Dr. CH. Annapurna and hundreds of students and faculty, declared

‘Swachha Pakhwada Declaration’ announcing that ‘the college and its premises are clean after

Swachha Pakhwada’ in the midst of huge applause by the gathering.

28. NSS Volunteers of St. Joseph College took a rally and performed Street Play on

AIDS , 01-12-2017 .

NSS Volunteers organised a rally in their adopted village on ‘World AIDS Day’. Apart from

taking rally, students performed a street play titled ‘Value of Life’ depicting important aspects of

HIV/AIDS and need for thorough blood test by pregnant women.

29. Detailed report on ODF Survey, December, 2017.

The NSS Volunteers have conducted ODF Survey in the month of December 2017 in

Pilakavanipalem, Javahar Nagar, Sriharipuram, Prakashnagar, Jalari street, Kunchamma colony,

Koramandal area and Golla veedhi under GVMC urban limits.

The reasons for not having toilet in some houses are –site in dispute, lack of money due to

poverty, some houses are vacant nobody living in them and some are not available at the time of

survey.

The following is the detailed report on the ODF survey conducted in the above areas.

30.‘Janmabhoomi-Mana Vuru’ began in adopted village , 2-1-2018.

31.‘Janmabhoomi-Mana Vuru’ a prestigious programme initiated by the State Govt. of Andhra

Pradesh began at Gnanapuram .About 25 students and Programme Officer explained and created

awareness on many Govt, Welfare Schemes meant for Women, children, students, Pregnent

women, Widows and disabled people. They told the general public about schemes such as


Bangaruthalli, pension schemes for old aged, disabled, widowed women, distribution of bicycles

to school going girls, arogya sree, NTR housing scheme for the poor, Pavala vaddi for

DWACRA WOMEN, skill development training for educated unemployed youth, Incubation

centers for Start ups by young techies and entrepreneurs etc.

In janmabhoomi maa vooru programme, a Grama sabha was held jointly by the NSS unit and

Janmabhoomi commitee members at Maridas community hall in Gnanapuram. In this program

the college NSS Programme Officer Dr.Manikya Kumari and Economics Lecturer Mrs.

Praneetha, local leader Sri Chinna Kumar and members of Janmabhoomi Committee of

Gnanapuaram, people and students participated in big numbers.

NAD Paul, UNICEF Coordinator Dr. Ramesh Babu, NSS District Programme Officer Ms.

Bhagya Lakshmi and other resource persons explained the students about the issues on

adolescence and how to fight against the atrocities against adolescent children and skills to

motivate the community to overcome these problems. The programme was attended by the P.Os

of different colleges. As many as 200 students from various colleges participated. The

programme concluded with songs, dances and distribution of Certificates in the valedictory

function.

PROGRAMME REPORT

A three day Residential outreach and awareness programme ‘KISHORI VIKASAM’, to

improve the lives of adolescent girls in Visakhapatnam district was organized and concluded

fruitfully at Govt. B. C. Girls Welfare Hostel, Odachipurupalli in Parawada mandal under St.

Joseph College UNICEF coordinator and NSS Programme Officer Dr. K. Manikya Kumari

from 8th -10th December 2017. A team of seven trained Peer Leaders of the college namely

Poojitha, Ramya & Anjali of IIBBA, Divya Swaroopa, Sharanya Nambiyar, Shirisha, Divya of

IIBSc created awareness on the issues related to girls such as Health & Nutrition, Personal

Hygiene, Child labour, Gender Discrimination, infant girl foeticide, Child marriages, child abuse

etc., and explained the students about how they affect their lives as adolescents through posters,

charts, skits and group interactions.

The Peer Leaders and Coordinator Dr. Manikya Kumari emphasized mainly on maintaining

personal health and hygiene during menstruation, intake of nutritious food, prevention of Child

marriages which hinder the physical and intellectual health of the adolescent children and right

age to marry for a boy and girl. Further they explained how rampant the gender discrimination is

in the society leading to girl infant foeticide which is the main reason for low male- female ratio

in the human population. Women and Girl trafficking is another serious issue focussed during

this programme and the girl students were advised to sense good and bad touch and keep away

from strangers and unknown people. They were reminded the importance of Girl child education

which helps to build better homes and better society.

They were also advised to fight against and report to the authorities when they confront such

issues. The peer leaders interacted with the hostel children in class wise groups and involved

them in understanding various aspects of adolescent issues. They gave them different tasks to

express about what they have learned over the three days through poster painting and conducted

a few games such as Arm wrestling, Quiz, Singing, Dancing etc., to encourage active

participation. The winners were given small gifts and chocolates by the Programme Coordinator

Dr. Manikya Kumari .The peer leaders also enquired about the facilities provided by the govt. to

the girls hostels and verified the status and utility of toilets, quality food supply and other

residential facilities. Later they dined with the hostel students the same food provided to the

inmates and gave them necessary advice to excel in their education and fulfil their goals in life

and live a meaningful life of their choice.

The programme was facilitated by Prof. R. D. Sampath Kumar, AU NSS Programme

Coordinator, B. V. Subba Reddy- UNICEF Consultant, Hyderabad and Dr. Y. Ramesh Babu –

Project Coordinator UNICEF/NSS/AU. The Principal of St Joseph college provided all necessary

help to conduct this programme successfully. The programme was widely covered in the print

PROGRAMME REPORT

A two day ‘UNICEF-Junior College Level programme’, to improve the lives of

adolescent girls in Visakhapatnam district was organized by St. Joseph College UNICEF

coordinator and NSS Programme Officer Dr. K. Manikya Kumari from 28th -29th December

2017. A team of trained Peer Leaders of the college created awareness on the issues related to

girls such as Health & Nutrition, Personal Hygiene, Child labour, Gender Discrimination, Child

marriages etc., with the help of posters, charts, skits and interactions.

On the first day they explained students about intake of nutritious food, maintain personal

hygiene during menstruation, prevention of Child marriages and right age to marry. Further they

explained about gender discrimination in the society leading to infant girl foeticide causing low

male- female ratio in the human population. Girl trafficking and Drug abuse are other serious

issue focussed during this programme and advised them to keep away from drugs, alcohol,

smoking, strangers and unknown people. They were reminded the importance of Girl child

education which helps them to build better society.

They were also advised to fight against the exploitation of children and adolescents as

domestic workers and in unorganised sectors. They were told to report the same to the authorities

if found. A few students responded when asked whether they have witnessed any child marriage

in their localities. One girl said that she witnessed a child marriage but nobody stopped it. Then

Dr. Manikya Kumari told students to report any such incident to the authorities through Help line

no: 1098. She also explained students about the reproductive growth of adolescent boys and girls

and the right age to marry and bear children.

On the second day the peer leaders interacted with the adolescents and asked to what

extent this programme would help them. They said that they have learned many useful aspects of

adolescence and this awareness helped them to focus on right things in life. Later a few

competitions such as Elocution, Quiz, Poster making and skit were conducted. Many students

actively participated. The winners were given mementos by the College In-charge of

Intermediate students, Sister Ruby. Addressing the students, she said that students should

concentrate on their studies than to divert their minds on unnecessary things. She emphasised

that the parents should spend quality time with their children and enquire about their academic

performance quite often specially in the age group of 15 to 18 since this age group children get

attracted to anything that distract them from academics.

The programme was facilitated by B. V. Subba Reddy- UNICEF Consultant, Hyderabad

and supervised by Dr. Y. Ramesh Babu – Project Coordinator UNICEF/NSS/AU. The Principal

of St. Joseph College, Dr. Sr. Shyji provided all necessary help to conduct this programme

successfully.

Community outreach programme

UNICEF Community outreach programme was held at Bishop Mariyadas Community

Hall, at Gnanapuram to educate parents of adolescents about Child Marriages, child labour, child

trafficking and child right. Dr. K. Manikya Kumari , Dr. P. Mangaveni and the peer leaders

explained the local people about various issues related to adolescents through schematic skits,

charts and songs. Parents were advised to provide healthy food and get marry their children only

when they reach suitable age of 18 years above for girls and 21 tears for boys. They also advised


to keep personal hygiene and menstrual hygiene of the women and girls. The programme was

Adolescent Education Program held at Sacred Heart Girl’s High School, Gnanapuram, 12-

An Educative program on the issues related to the adolescent girls of 9th and 10th classes was

held at Sacred Heart Girl’s High School in the city today. In view of the growing atrocities

against adolescent girl children and various issues that they face at home, society, educational

institutes and other places. The NSS Program Officer and HOD, Botany of St. Joseph College for

Women Dr. K. Manikya Kumari along with her student peer leaders organised this program in

the school premises under UNICEF-School Level Event. Speaking to the students Dr. Manikya

Kumari explained the girls about the growingup changes physically and psychologically and told

students not to divert their attention on easy attractions, to sense good and bad touch by related

people as well as strangers. She advised them not to indulge in any abuses and be aware of their

surroundings. The students were educated on the Physical and mental health, menstrual hygiene,

Say no to bad habits, inculcate talents and skills along with education and excel in every field of

their choice. She asked them to keep fit and fight against social evils like child marriages and

child labour because children should stay in schools but not in work places. Childhood is the

most precious and beautiful stage in life and never lose it, she said. The student peer leaders of

UNICEF wing of the College encouraged the children by conducting competitions in games such

as ‘Tug of War’ and ‘Arm Wrestling’. Hundreds of students cheered their favourite player with a

high fervour and cheers. Song and extempore competitions were also held and winners were

given small prizes. The college students performed a thought provoking skit on the ‘Troubled

Childhood’ depicting child labour issue. The School Head Mistress Sr. Sakuntala and several

teachers also participated in the program. The program ended with endless cheers and Pongal

wishes as the School declared Sankranthi holidays.

UNICEF Annual Review Summit Held at St. Joseph College

Visakhapatnam, 25-01-2018

To review the different programmes organized under UNICEF, the review committee members

of UNICEF from Delhi and Hyderabad had conducted a Review meeting and an interactive

session with the UNICEF student peer leaders, active NSS Volunteers and Programme Officers

at St. Joseph College for Women (Autonomous) Visakhapatnam today. The members of the

committee included were Prof. Seema Kumar-UNICEF Specialist Hyderabad, Mrs. Dwaraka

Sriram-UNICEF Officer New Delhi, Mr. Murali Krishna-Child Protection Officer Hyderabad,

Dr. Subba Reddy-UNICEF Coordinator Hyderabad, Prof. Sampath Kumar-AU NSS

Coordinator, Mrs. Sunanda-District Coordinator and Dr. K. Manikya Kumari –UNICEF College

Coordinator. As the organiser of the programme, Dr. Manikya Kumari gave a detailed account of

various UNICEF programs held during the academic year 2017-2018 on the issues of adolescent

girls. More than 100 students participated in the program. A photo and poster display was also

held. Prof. Seema Kumar and Ms. Dwaraka Sriram from Delhi interacted with students and

asked for their opinion over the programs and how they benefited them in the family and the

society. They also enquired about the gender discrimination that they faced at home and outside.

The students shared their experiences with the team members. Speaking to the gathering Prof.

Sampath Kumar said that the NSS is providing needed platform to take UNICEF activities into

the society very effectively. The child protection Officer Mr. Murali Krishna said that in certain


cases the adolescent boys are also facing discrimination and issues like drug abuse and irregular

brought up by their parents. The college another Program Officer Dr. Annapurna shared her

views about her recent visit to a Govt. Girl’s Hostel on adolescent issues. College Principal Sr.

Shyji and Dr. Mangaveni, HOD Chemistry were present. Dr. Mangaveni concluded the session

with vote of thanks.

Known to be one of the most happening associations of St. Joseph’s college is the BA Fusion BASE. This has

been incorporated into the curriculum of the BA Department with the main aim of involving the maximum

number of students in the entertaining and talent tapping activities conducted by the office bearers which is

assisted by the Staff advisors.

The office bearers for the year 2017-18 are:

The association never fails to come up with at least one activity per month aiming at the development and

enhancement of literary skills, communication skills, confidence and giving a platform for all the hidden

talents. This enables the students to be more interactive and gives them a holistic development. Firstly, the

BA wall has been decorated in order to welcome the freshers which marked the beginning of the session.

The activities that have been conducted so far in the 2017-18 curriculum are:

INTERACTIVE SESSION: on the 27th of June, 2017 there was an interactivesession conducted by the

associations for all the first year students to welcome and introduce them to the association and its activities.

ICE BREAKING ACTIVITY: on the 30th of June, 2017 there was an ice breaking session conducted among

all the three years to promote healthy and strong attachment with the freshers. There were around 80

participants from all the years, the winners being:

Shiny Joice (I BA EPJ)

MEHENDI COMPETITION: on the 13th of July, 2017 there was Mehendi competition conducted by the

association which had 15 participants from all the three years with the following winners

Brahmini (I BA EPO)

MASH UP COMPETITION: on the 19th of July,2017 the first team event has been conducted where the

teams were asked to do a mash up of songs. This event had a total of 9 teams with the following teams as

winners

Mahati and Lasya (III and I)

Gayatri and Anvita (III)

Swetha and Tabita (II)

WALL JOURNAL: The department walls have been decorated with utmost creativity and co ordination

from all the three years on the occasion of Friendship Day on the 6th of August, 2017.

NATIONAL HANDLOOM WEEK: On the 12th of August the BA Department has observed it as Handloom

day promoting Handloom by dolling up in handloom clothes and later on having a JAM session. There were

participants with the following as winners

HAIR STYLING: on the 24th of August,2017 there was hair styling competition conducted which had seen 16

participants with the following students as winners

EHNIC DAY: on the 26th of August 2017 the department has observed it as ethnic day which made all the

students dress up in ethnic clothes which represented some part of the country. This has been followed by a

ramp walk and a JAM session with the following declared as winners:

ONAM: On the 4th of September 2017 the department has celebrated Onam focusing on the culture and

traditions followed by the God’s Own Country.

TEACHER’S DAY: On the 5th of September, 2017 all the BA Department lecturers were invited and the

students from all the three years have performed few cultural events and the lecturers were made to

participate in some fun filled activities.

FACE PAINTING: on the 18th of September the association has conducted a face painting competition with

Halloween or Horror as a theme, the activity has been successful with 15 participants from all the three years

WALL JOURNAL: the BA wall journal has always been aesthetically decorated with the creativity and co-

ordination of all the three years observing all the festivals and observant days.

NAIL ART : on the 7th of December as a part of Excelsiar 2k17 the department has conducted nail art

competition which had a number of participants.

CHRISTMAS FRIEND: on the 13th of December the final year students along with the lecturers had the

Christmas friend tasks exchanged and performed which gave immense joy to all the students as well as the

lecturers.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS: on the 16th of December, 2017 the department has had its Christmas

celebrations along with all the department lectures. The final years and the lecturers exchanged gifts as part

of Secret Santa.

FOOD FEST: on the 2nd of February the BA department has conducted food fest with 9 stalls selling

different kinds of food. The fest went on during the lunch break which has seen a decent number of

customers.

Quizzing club conducted about 10 sessions of 45 min each in the academic year 2017-18.Members of the
