MISSION-DRIVEN PARISH LEADERSHIP

Building on the rich legacy of parishioner leadership in the St. Joseph’s faith community throughout its history and with the desire to be mission driven, our Parish Pastoral Council spent several years studying a model of ministry that effectively places the pastoral staff at the service of the people. Today, each staff member serves as the liaison to a parish-led “ministry leadership team.” These teams are comprised of talented, faith-filled parishioners and representatives of various “ministering communities” that serve a variety of parish and community needs.

Our six major areas of ministry, each with its own leadership team, are identified as:

Leadership Team Parish Staff Liaison

Worship, Music & Hospitality Nancy Veronesi Faith for Life Jeanne Mooney Pastoral Care Duncan Harris Social Outreach Duncan Harris Stewardship & Community Building Cathy Kamp Operations Patrick Vogt Youth Ministry Lisa Mannella

Ministry Leadership Teams: Each ministry leadership team is dedicated to setting priorities to grow its services to the parish and community. When members of the team gather, meetings include time spent in prayer, learning about the biblical and theological roots of the ministry, and the practical matters that keep the ministry moving forward in new and enlivening ways.

Parish Pastoral Council: Provides leadership in prayerful collaboration with the Pastor. Members serve on a leadership team. Nominated in spring of each year, members serve for three years. Meets 7:00-9:00pm, 2nd Mondays, September through June. 2017-2018 Co-Chairs are Mary Ann Lovelock and Ned Sayegh.

Parish Finance Council: Analyze, plan and audit parish finances, implement fiscal policies, prepare annual budget and monitor sacrificial offering program. Serve for three years; meet 7:30-9:00pm, 3rd or 4th Mondays, September to July. 2017-2018 Chair is Chris Pantaleo.

Today, we are a parish driven by our mission to witness to the love of Jesus Christ in the world. We demonstrate that commitment each day through our Gratitude, Discipleship, and Hospitality.

SACRAMENTS

We are a community nourished in faith. The life and spirit of God is shared with us through the sacramental life of our church. In the Sacraments, our community is strengthened and nourished with God’s grace. Sacraments are generally celebrated during weekend liturgies.

Baptism: Baptism for infants and children up to 7 years of age, is generally celebrated during Sunday Liturgy, or following the 11am liturgy. As you await the arrival of your child, please call Kathy Best at 585.586.8089 ext 120, [email protected] to schedule your baptism and to begin the preparation for this Sacrament of Initiation. Baptism for those over 7 years of age generally occurs through the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults during the Easter Vigil. Please contact Cathy Kamp at 585.586.8089 ext 115, [email protected].

First Eucharist, First Reconciliation: These sacraments are celebrated with children based on Diocese of Rochester guidelines published in September 2014. At St. Joseph’s, we celebrate the sacraments along with the whole family in a broader context of faith formation and liturgical participation. Some guidelines for enrollment in sacramental preparation include: The child participates in the liturgical celebrations of the Parish, has participated in a Faith Formation program for at least one year and currently participates in a Faith Formation program or is enrolled in Catholic School. To begin Sacramental preparation, please contact Kathy Best at 585.586.8089 ext 120 or [email protected].

First Eucharist: Celebrated during spring of each year for children who are in at least in Grade 2. Immediate preparation is a focused 4-session program that involves both the child and parents. The celebration takes place during Sunday Masses so that our Parish can share in the First Communicant’s welcome at the table of the Lord. 2018 First Eucharist celebrations will occur on two weekends in April and/or May, 2018.

First Reconciliation: The Sacrament of God’s forgiveness is celebrated once a year for children preparing for First Eucharist in the second grade. Children from Grade 2 and above who are participating in Faith Formation are welcome to this preparation. Immediate preparation is a focused 3 session program gathering both parents and children for faith sharing and learning. Celebration of First Reconciliation must precede First Eucharist. First Reconciliation celebrations for this year will be scheduled in December, 2017 at 9:00 and 11:00 am.

Confirmation: This Sacrament is celebrated once a year at Sacred Heart Cathedral, usually in the spring, with the Bishop presiding. Candidates begin preparation in Grade 8 or above. The program includes learning sessions during Youth Group meetings or classes in Catholic Middle/High School, a retreat and community service. Together young people embrace participation in the community and deepen their commitment to the faith we share. It is a two year commitment. Please contact Lisa Mannella at 585-586-8089 ext 114 or [email protected] for more information. The 2018 celebration of Confirmation will be scheduled at Sacred Heart Cathedral in the early spring.

RCIA- The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: If you have been thinking about becoming a full member of the Catholic Church, RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation) is the process which leads to full initiation. The RCIA journey is for adults and children over age 7 who: have never been baptized, have been baptized in another denomination, or have been baptized Catholic but have never received the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Please contact Cathy Kamp at 585.586.8089 ext 115, [email protected].

A monthly Mass including the Sacrament of Healing takes place on the first Thursday of the even months at 11:00 am.

Holy Orders: Through ministerial Priesthood and the Diaconate, the church ordains ministers to lead the community and care for the Body of Christ. Contact Fr. Jim Schwartz at 585.586.8089 ext 112, [email protected] if you feel that the Lord is calling you to either of these ministries.

Faith Formation is a lifelong activity. It is necessary for spiritual growth throughout our lives. St. Joseph’s invites you to participate in as many ways as you have interest or ability and time. We are all called to full, conscious, active and informed participation in the life, mission, and ministry of the Church and our local parish. There are many opportunities for families and individuals to develop an understanding and practice of faith, to prepare for and continue to celebrate the awesome gift of Christ’s presence in the Sacrament.

Meets the fourth Monday evening of the month from September to May in the Learning Center. Please join us to share your ideas and suggestions about our parish faith formation programs, for one meeting, or for ongoing participation. Catechists: Sometimes called teachers or instructors, Catechists are other parishioners who help us and our children grow in knowledge and understanding of our faith.

o Primary Catechist: Assist with children in grades K-5. We strongly encourage volunteers to work in pairs to share the load, support one another, and ensure the safety of these children. We need volunteers for the Summer Faith Formation program (July 9-21), Wednesday evening Faith Formation sessions during the school-year, and for sacramental preparation. The parish provides formation (training & preparation) of Catechists, innovative learning materials, other resources, and very good facilities for these sessions. Contact Jeanne Mooney at 585.586.8089 x116, [email protected]

o Catechist Aide: These volunteers support Primary Catechists in the classroom. They are generally adults or older teens. Catechist Aides help with the learning activities and the other needs that occur in a classroom situation. This is an excellent way to make an important contribution to the lifelong learning of our next

Liturgy of the Word for Children Presider-The Liturgy of the Word for Children (LWC) occurs at three weekly liturgies (Sat. 5; Sun. 9 & 11), and includes children from 4-10 years of age. Parents are always welcome to join their children, although this is not necessary since there is ample trained supervision. Children are called forward following the opening prayer at the beginning of the Mass. They are led to their special prayer space over in our school foyer and celebrate the Liturgy of the Word including the 1st and 2nd Readings, the Psalm, the Gospel, and the Prayer of the Faithful. Children return to their families in church at the Preparation of the Gifts. As a Presider, you help the children to listen to God’s word, explore it at a level they understand and return in prayer to the Liturgy of the Eucharist. We support you with materials, training and ideas. This is an opportunity to reflect on the readings and by sharing with young people to challenge yourself to better understand the Gospel readings. Contact Jeanne Mooney at 585.586.8089 x116, [email protected].

Adults Formation

o Small Groups: St. Joseph’s is a dynamic community of Bible study and faith-sharing groups, in the tradition of the earliest Christian followers. Recognize the purpose of athletics to promote the spiritual, emotional, intellectual, social and physical well-being of individual players

Offer opportunities for players to live out the teachings of their faith

Emphasize the proper ideals of ethical conduct, sportsmanship, showing courtesy to visiting coaches, officials and players, and fair play · Understand that the most important aspect of participation will be the lifelong values derived by practicing good sportsmanship and Christ-centered behaviors.

o Participants have the opportunity for soccer (autumn) and basketball (winter) competition in conjunction with Diocese of Rochester programs.

o St. Joseph’s has an excellent gymnasium built in the 1980s, and excellent outdoor fields for soccer competition.

St. Joseph School is a Catholic elementary school of the Diocese of Rochester educating children from pre-school through sixth grade. Our commitment is to develop the spiritual, social and academic growth of each individual child. The enrollment currently is approximately 300 students in grades K-6, along with growing Pre-K classes, and students who participate in after school “wrap-around” opportunities.

The mission of St. Joseph’s School is to create an environment that encourages an awareness of the presence of Christ in each one of us. Our aim is to continue to grow as a Christian community in which freedom is tempered with self-discipline and a sense of responsibility toward others. Within this framework, the faculty and staff provide an excellent education and encourage each student to develop an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity within the school as well as within the greater community.

St. Joseph School strives to guide each student toward an increasing awareness of the love of God, personified in his Son and in all humanity and to foster an appreciation of the individual worth and talents of each member of the community. In addition, we nurture the value of self-discipline, enabling each student to focus on those concepts, which generate spiritual, social, academic and emotional growth. We seek to impart to each student the fundamental values and skills needed for academic proficiency and to provide experiences that will stimulate and develop creative and physical growth.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA): The PTA helps to foster a strong sense of community for students, parents and alumni. PTA has 3 avenues by which it supports St. Joseph School. The PTA serves as a representative of all families and students to the school administration and parish. PTA focuses on offering a robust selection of enrichment activities focused on: athletics, life skills, the catholic faith, social, and entertainment growth. (Please reference the SJS 2016-2017 Enrichment Catalog) Some specific social events are: The Halloween

Sock Hop, Spring Carnival, Welcoming Events, and Ice Cream Socials. PTA contributes to the operation of the school through fundraising for both the general expenses as well as specific intentions (i.e. SMART BOARDS and the Playground Expansion Project). The Parent Teachers Association (PTA) is comprised of the Principal, Chairperson, a Secretary, Treasurer and the individual committee chairs. PTA supports the school's mission through the efforts of parent volunteers. They participate in committees formed for the purpose of conducting the activities needed to enhance the education received by our students including social events, new student welcoming events, fundraisers, and teacher appreciation. PTA meets once a month at 7PM in the school library. For more information, contact the St. Joseph’s School Office, 585.586.6968.

St. Joseph School Foundation (PACE): Friends of St Joseph School. The mission of PACE is dedicated to providing counsel and long-term sustainability to educate students with an affordable, faith-based curriculum that instills the ideals of service and citizenship. PACE is a fully approved and independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit foundation. PACE was formed by dedicated parents of St. Joseph School who are committed to catholic education. In 2005, the U.S. Catholic Bishops held a conference and issued the Renewing Our Commitment to Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools in the Third Millennium statement which included some of the following positions. The entire Catholic community must now focus on the future and the many challenges we face We must pursue effective responses to the challenges we face We must move forward with faith, courage and enthusiasm Catholic schools are a major resource for nurturing faith and fostering values Catholic schools are a vital ministry of our parishes and so important to our future. In response to the challenges and with a strong commitment to Catholic education, a number of St. Joseph families actively began developing ways to help promote and advocate for Catholic education. Early in the process, the parents received guidance and lessons learned from Partners in Mission and other resources, which allowed them to develop an effective path forward and secure the necessary enlistment of volunteers. It took almost one year but the fruit of their labor has been extraordinary and has resulted in a newly formed not-for-profit foundation.

Amy Johnson is the school principal. There is a large, dedicated staff and faculty that take pride in their efforts to teach students the precepts and values of the Catholic faith and the value of true compassion. St. Joseph School is a place with heart and has been educating children for over fifty years in the Penfield area.

St Joseph School meets and exceeds all New York State curriculum guidelines in required areas of studies and is staffed with New York State certified teachers. Registration at the school takes place each year in February. We welcome your questions and inquiries, which you can make by calling 585-586-6968, or www.SJSpenfield.com. Our staff will be very happy to help you.
