ST. JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC CHURCH
From the Pastor’s Laptop
Father Mark Wagner
Today is the great day of our annual Corpus Christi Procession, and we will have a joyful parade with Jesus through the streets of our neighborhood! By doing this, we are publicly proclaiming our faith; that Jesus is alive and that He is still with us! He is risen and He is living in the “Bread of Life”!
In our second reading today, however, St. Paul says that we are also proclaiming the DEATH of Our Lord. He says: “as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes.” This means that the Eucharist is a reminder, or “memorial” of the saving death of Jesus. The Mass reminds us of the crucifixion and it makes present again this one saving sacrifice. 1000 Years ago St. Thomas Aquinas wrote the benediction prayer which says: “Lord Jesus Christ, you gave us the Eucharist as the memorial of your suffering and death.”

In the Eucharist we “proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes”, as St. Paul says. When we come with Jesus into the neighborhoods today we will be publicly proclaiming that Jesus is coming! At the end of time: “He will come in glory to judge the living and the dead. ” (Creed) Then immediately in this same Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul explains when Jesus comes He always comes as a judge. Even when we receive communion we receive our judge. If someone receives Holy Communion unworthily, he "eats and drinks judgment on himself" (1Cor. 11:29). But Jesus is a merciful judge. Today we will "Walk in the Way of Mercy" and welcome Him in o u r h e a r t s a n d i n t o our neighborhoods!

Every month during the Year of Mercy we are reflecting on Works of Mercy
May: Comfort the Afflicted
Come to evening Mass on Wednesdays, when we pray for the intercession of our Mother of Perpetual Help.
Check the front office or our events calendar for meeting/contact
information about groups meeting at St. Joseph’s, including : AA Al Anon (Spanish and English) Alateen Encourage Courage Call “211”, a free and confidential service that helps people find the

Sometimes the people who suffer the most are the ones who suffer in silence. Be a friend to someone and show concern for their well- being. Try to always be a comforting Light of Jesus in the world.
Step in when you see someone being degraded or bullied, and put a stop to it. You can change the course of someone’s life with a simple act of Mercy.
Don’t ignore people; try to be that person who listens when someone
is talking to you about their concerns.
Actions for this month:
It’s a simple concept. Baby bottles filled with coins. That’s the Baby Bottle Campaign. But this simple concept yields impressive results. This change adds
up, and truly changes lives. Through hosting a Baby Bottle Campaign and partnering with Modesto Pregnancy Center, you allow us to continue being
dedicated to protecting the unborn, and providing for those facing an unplanned pregnancy, as well as the many other services we offer.

Parish Stewardship — a way of life
MILITARY SALUTE! By Leonard Churilla Newell Stitzell, son of Newell and Ruby Stitzell, was born on November 8, 1939 in Whittier, California. He was raised by his stepfather, George M. Young, from the age of eight. His older sister, Billie Mae, passed away but he has a younger sister, Mary Kay. He spent most of his youth in the Newport Beach and Vista area of California
and graduated from Banning High School in Banning, California. “My father was a fisherman,” he related, “so I spent a lot of time on the ocean. We used to fish for albacore as far as 200 miles off the California coast. As a kid I watched with him as Navy submarines used our fishing boats for simulated target practice. We could see their periscopes. I think that’s what influenced me most in joining the navy in 1958. After basic training in San Diego Newell became a radioman and later a boatswain’s mate. Eventually, he found his true calling in the electronics field, becoming an electronics technician. Among his duty stations he served aboard the amphibious attack troop ship USS Pickaway (APA-222), the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-63), the guided missile destroyer USS Hoel (DDG-13), the replenishment ship USS Wabash (AOR-5), and smaller crafts, YOGs, tugs, and landing crafts. He also saw duty off the coast of Vietnam and spent two years on Guam. “I especially enjoyed my tour on Guam because we used to transport avgas and mogas to the islands of Saipan and Tinian. We were allowed to wear dungarees pants and Hawaiian shirts on liberty at that time. We also helped escort Coast Guard vessels to Cocas Island, a Loran station.” Newell spent four years as an instructor on Treasure Island and two years at Naval Air Station, Alameda. He retired from the Naval service in November 1980 and then then took a job with Western Airlines, loading planes at the San Francisco Airport. Later he started working in the Electronic Test Houses in Silicon Valley as an electronic maintenance technician on the computer system that tests the electronic wafers and chips. In March 1983 he married the former Criselda Pasco Ylagan, originally from the Philippines, whom he met in Daly City through her aunt. They have four children, one girls and three boys. Although registered with Our Lady of Fatima Church, they often attend Mass at St. Joseph’;. “We appreciate that St. Joseph’s has so many organizations and keeps people informed.” Newell is a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Legion of Mary.
Marie Fournier Marie Fournier and her husband
have been parishioners of St. Joseph’s for many years. Among the many ministries in which Marie participates, is serving as a catechist for our children in our Parish School of Religion.
Marie has also coordinated the special May session of Sacramental Preparation for First Holy Communion, using a new curriculum and preparing the materials to be used by the small group of catechists during this month.
“Her love for the
Lord and for the
faith permeates all
that she does in
our parish. “
In addition to teaching, Marie also
helps with our beautiful First Holy Communion ceremonies. She is a member of the Secular Carmelites and is the current president of the community in Modesto. Marie also serves as a Eucharistic Minister, teaches Lectio Divina (the Reading of Sacred Scripture), for the adults in the RCIA program.
Her love for the Lord and for the faith permeates all that she does in our par ish. Thank you for your stewardship, Marie!
