Pastor’s Column

Dear Parishioners, I’m a very positive person. Perhaps you’ve noticed! I usually use this space to reflect on God’s graces and the wonderful blessings we have. There are many! Just look at the bulletin. But still, sometimes one gets a little “weighed down” by things. I had such a moment last weekend. Perhaps it was a product of listening to St. Paul talk in the second reading last weekend about “great sor-row and constant anguish in [his] heart.” I was already missing Tyler something terrible, and then an even bigger cloud came over me. I looked out and saw so many empty pews. There was no singing. Since our faces are covered I saw no smiles. I had no servers at some Masses. God will get us through these times. His Providence never fails! If you know folks who aren’t coming back to Mass but are going to school, work, Walmart, Kroger, Rural King, Chalulas, Outback Steakhouse, and sports games or practices, please kindly encourage them to come back to church. It is the most important thing. As of this Sunday, it has been 152 days since the last public Mass before COVID-19. That is too long to go without the Eucharist. Blessings and prayers, Fr. Mike

St. Joseph News

Congratulations!

Congratulations and welcome to Geralyn Dolce, baptized at St. Joseph last weekend by Fr. Mike. God bless you! Here is a picture of her with her mother and godmother.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to these folks who made their First Holy Communion at 12:15pm Mass last weekend!

St. Vincent News

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

The Gospel for this weekend calls us to recognize the power of faith and persistence despite circum-stances that appear to be hopeless. The Canaanite Woman has nothing that would make her think that Jesus would fulfill her most pressing desire: that he cure her sick daughter. She is a Gentile, she is a woman, the disciples want her to shut up and go away, Jesus even calls her a “dog”, the Gospel writer doesn’t even give her a name. And yet she keeps following and asking Jesus to “Have pity on me.” She has great faith!

Sometimes when we pray for something close to our hearts it’s like we keep begging God to have pity on us and heal us, but God doesn’t hear us or answer us. We pray for a grown child to come back to church, for someone to stop drinking too much alco-hol, for a friend to be cured from a life-threatening disease; for the COVID- 19 virus to be eliminated, for world peace. The list goes on and on.

Even when we are discouraged, we need to learn from the Canaanite Woman to keep asking and have faith that God will respond to our great faith. This week as we pray, let us pray with renewed faith that God will answer our prayers in our best interest.

September Newsletter—Aug. 23

The deadline for the September Newsletter is next Sunday, August 23rd. Please share your joys and sorrows with your Parish Family. Contact Pat at 765-265-7195 or email [email protected].

Did you know?

Each week, we are including a fact about slavery in the bulletin as a reminder of our fundamental duty to treat all as brothers and sisters in the Lord. The Catechism teaches that “enslavement of human beings, their being bought, sold and exchanged like merchandise, [is] in disregard for their personal digni-ty. It is a sin against the dignity of persons and their fundamental rights to reduce them by violence to their productive value…” (CCC 2414).

Money meant for distressed homeowners supported segregation. In 1933, the Home Owners’ Loan Cor-poration was created and helped more than 1 million homeowners. There were no loans to blacks in white neighborhoods. The HOLC was the origin of “redlining” maps. The result: African Americans have not been able to get a foothold in the economy. Home ownership is one way to do that.

Outdoor Mass On Sundays

St. Vincent will continue to have 8:30am Sunday Mass outside at Mary’s statue. Remember to bring your lawn chairs, social distance and wear a mask. In Case of Rain and we have to have Mass inside and only about 50 people can safely be in church, please know that you can hear and/or see Mass in the St. Vincent’s Hall and can hear Mass in your car on the radio station 105.3. Holy Communion will be distributed at these places during communion time. You may also watch Mass livestream in your home.

Religious Education at St. Vincent

Religious Education at St. Vincent will begin on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 from 6:15 until 7:30pm for 4 yr. old pre-school through 8th grade students. The fee is $50.00 per family. Please register on line on our website: svdpcc.com.

High School Freshman will have Confirmation classes on Sunday afternoons at 4:00 – 5:30pm on the first and third Sundays of the month beginning on September 20th at St. Joseph Cafeteria. The fee is $50.00 per student. They can then join the high- school youth group for all high school students that meets on Sundays at 6:00 – 7:30 pm. There is no fee except for special events. The first Sunday of the month meeting will be at St. Vincent school building.

If you do not plan on participating in religious educa-tion in person and want to do it at home, please con-tact Sr. Joan 812-455-9348 by phone or text. There is a plan for this also. The fee for this depends on what plan you choose.

Book Box at St. Vincent

There is a new Book Box in the corner of St. Vin-cent’s parking lot by the Hall. It is for people to trade books. Bring a book, take a book. The books can be children’s book, good novels, whatever kind you want to share. There is no limit of how many you take or if you bring them back—just enjoy.

St. Vincent Purpose Statement

We joyfully share our gifts to nourish the community.

Indiana Bishops’ Announcement Regarding Sunday Mass

“While commending our pastors and parish life coor-dinators who have gone to great lengths to assure safe worship spaces in our churches, due to the increase in the COVID-19 cases in our state, the Indiana bishops have decided to extend the dispen-sation from the obligation of Sunday Mass attendance beyond August 15 until November 1, 2020, unless further developments determine otherwise.”

News for Both Parishes Fr. Mike’s Bookshelf

This week I would like to recommend a book that anyone can read! It is so easily accessible because it is a series of letters written to Pope Francis. The book includes the Pope’s answers. The kids have great questions to ask the pope. One asks about his favorite place to pray. Another asks if he likes to dance. Another asks why his parents always fight. Some questions are funny. Some are serious. One kid asks the pope, “If you could do one miracle, what would it be?” The pope reflects a few words and then says this: Dear William, If I could perform a miracle, I would heal every child. Your drawing makes me think: there is a big, dark cross, and a rainbow and sunshine behind it. I like that. My answer to the pain of children is silence, or perhaps a word that rises from my tears. I’m not afraid to cry. You shouldn’t be either. +Francis

The book includes children’s questions and drawings and the pope’s honest and simple answers. A picture of each child is included. I highly encourage this book. We have a lot to learn from our pope -- and from children.

St. Joseph Parking Lot

Please do not park in front of the trash and recycle dumpsters/bins during the week. Monday thru Friday. They are located behind St. Joseph Church on the left side near the cafeteria door.

Prayer Before & After Mass

Remember that it is a beautiful practice to pray be-fore Mass and after Mass. Offer a pious, heartfelt prayer before Mass asking Jesus to touch and trans-form your life. At the end of Mass, thanking God for the Eucharist.

Statement from the Batesville Deanery Regarding the Governor’s Executive Order

As you know, Governor Eric Holcomb issued an Executive Order on July 24, 2020, which requires the use of face coverings for everyone over the age of 7 in places open to the public. Since our parishes are open to the public and since social distancing cannot be completely observed inside, the priests and PLCs of the Batesville Deanery believe that the unified use of face coverings in our churches and other parish buildings is in the best interest of all. Effective July 27th, everyone entering a church, adoration chapel, school build-ing, parish office, or other parish building in the Batesville Deanery should wear a face covering of some kind until the Governor changes the expected practice. Those who have medical concerns should speak with their pastor or PLC. We appreciate every-one’s assistance in following the guidelines of the Archbishop and the Governor.

MUM Sales

The annual Mum Sale is back again at St. Joes! Give your support to our youth group by ordering a mum! This fundraiser helps with events and trips we take throughout the year with St. Joseph/St. Vin-cent’s youth group. Order forms will be available after all masses for the next several weeks and there will be online order forms as well that will be sent out. All orders and money will go to St. Joseph’s Parish office. The last day to order a Mum will be Thursday, September 10th. If you have any questions, contact Billy Cross at [email protected].

Bulletin Advertisers Needed

Did you know that our St. Joseph and St. Vincent Bulle-tin is printed at no cost to our parishioners? We have recently switched printers and are printing it locally. We are looking for your help to offset the printing cost by purchasing an ad. We are happy to announce St. Jo-seph and St. Vincent Church’s offices are selling ads for the Bulletin. If we are able to secure enough advertis-ers, we will be able to provide the Bulletin and some-times, print it in color for special occasions at no cost to parishioners. If you would like to place an ad in our weekly Bulletin, there are 3 different sizes and prices for a six month ad: Small ad (business card size): $ 400.00 ($15.39 a wk) Quarter page ad: $ 750.00 ($28.85 a wk) 1/2 page ad: $1350.00 ($51.92 a wk)
