Pastor’s Column

Dear Parish Families,

This weekend will be the last weekend without public Masses for a long, long time. That is my prayer and my hope! We have been without public Masses for a long time now. March 21/22 was the first weekend we couldn’t have public Mass. By my count, this makes 9 weekends straight without public Mass.

I hope everyone has truly MISSED the Mass. It seems to me that one fruit of this thing is that it will help us be a little less lukewarm I hope, and I include myself in that. We take so much for granted, even the most important stuff. Like the Sacraments.

Last Friday was the last day of school at St. Joe School. Thank you for supporting our school. It is the most important ministry of our parish. We contin-ue to pray for growth. If you have a child who is of the age that could go to our school, prayerfully consider it. It is well worth the while. You can see on page three our student of the year, Charlie Fischer. The current 5th grade is filled with AMAZING kids. I love them each dearly.

Seminarian Tyler Huber arrived last week. Wel-come, Tyler! It will be a different summer for him and for all the other seminarians in parishes given the current state of things. I hope that by July we can resume parish life as we know it. I don’t want to miss out on all the trips Billy and I plan and lead each year.

Blessings and prayers, Fr. Mike

Last Day of School—May 15

Our teachers and staff greeted our kids as they dropped off their Chromebooks and textbooks and received their items from their classrooms. How we miss our kids!!

Fearless 365—Sign Up!

Did you know that the Bible says “Do not be afraid” 365 times? Deacon Tom, Fr. Mike, and perhaps a few others will be offering a reflection EVERY DAY in a new series called FEARLESS 365. We will take a look at the 365 Bible verses—one a day—and see what they have to say to us in our own day and age. We’ll send them out on Flocknote. See page 9 on how to join Flocknote.

Our Lady of Fatima & Opened Doors

It was no coincidence that our church doors were unlocked on Our Lady of Fatima’s feast day on May 13!!! Thank you MARY! Be sure to take a look at the Our Lady of Fatima posters by the main stairwell.

Livestream Schedule—May 16/17

We will livestream the following Masses at http://facebook.com/stjoeshelby. You can also watch them later on Flocknote.

Saturday—May 16 5:00pm Mass at St. Vincent, Fr. Adam

Sunday—May 17 10:00am Mass at St. Joseph, (w/ music), Fr. Mike 12:15pm Mass at St. Joseph in Spanish, Fr. Mike

St. Joseph News

A Note from Our Summer Seminarian

Dear Parishioners,

My name is Tyler Huber, and I am looking forward to spending my summer with you all at St. Joseph. As far as my own story goes, I grew up in Floyds Knobs, Indiana. My home parish is St. Mary of the Knobs, and I grew up playing sports, hunting, fishing, participating in youth ministry, and working on a family friend’s farm. After high school, I went to Purdue University to study engineering, and it was at an adoration chapel in Lafayette, Indiana where I first began to think about the priesthood. This revelation in my prayer life started during my sophomore year, but it took me several years to act on it.

During these early stages of discernment, I got more involved at the Newman Center on Purdue’s cam-pus, St. Tom’s. My sophomore year I helped lead a college aged men’s group, and my junior year I served as the youth minister for the middle and high school youth of the parish. After my junior year, I had my dream internship working for a structures firm up in Michigan. During that summer, God gave me everything I could have asked for... great friends, a strong Catholic community, a job I loved, and yet, I was still longing for something more.

It was through these experiences that God slowly prepared me to answer his invitation, and I am so glad I finally said yes to seminary following that sum-mer internship. I applied for St. Meinrad during my senior year, and I entered seminary the fall after my graduation. That was 2017, so I have been in semi-nary formation for three years now. I studied two years of philosophy before starting theology this past school year, and this will be my third summer assign-ment. I spent my first summer at Holy Spirit Parish on the eastside of Indianapolis, and I spent last sum-mer learning Spanish in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

During my three years of seminary, God has truly transformed me. I have grown in ways I never could have imagined possible, and I have made some of the closest friendships of my life. Saying yes to seminary has led to an incredible journey, and I am excited to see what God has in store for me during my time at St. Joseph’s.

St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery Clean-Up

During this time that you cannot be around other people, please plan to take a walk by yourself in St. Vincent Cemetery. While you are there please take the decorations off of your loved one’s grave. The winds have blown many around. You might even pick up some fallen branches and sticks and put them on the brush pile by the Pollinator Habitat Plot. May God bless you and keep you healthy.

St. Vincent Parish Picnic Cancelled

St. Vincent’s Parish Picnic has been cancelled for this spring due to COVID-19. We look forward to our combined parish picnic with St. Joseph on Wednes-day, August 19th.

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

Have you ever wondered if you really love God? How does a person show that they love God? Well, in this weekend’s Gospel Jesus tells us how to know if we love God. Jesus says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” And his greatest commandment is this, “Love one another.” And said another way, “Love your enemies.”

In these days of COVID-19, the way to show that we love one another is to stay away from each other. If a person is going to be around other people, the way to show that we love them is to wear a mask. Both of these actions are very difficult at times. We don’t want to stay away from our friends. We don’t like the inconvenience of wearing a mask, but we do it be-cause we love our neighbor.

For the next few weeks, even though Mass will be publically celebrated on May 24th, people over 65 years of age and those with underlying health conditions are asked to continue attending Mass on line. This is most difficult for me. I look at myself as being very healthy and don’t often think of my age, until now. It has always been my policy that I never ask anyone to do anything that I am not willing to do myself. Therefore, because of my age, I will not be attending the public Mass on Sundays. I say it again, it is most difficult for me. Love often asks us to do difficult things. We do them because we love God and other people. This is how we prove that we love God.

This week as we pray, pray for all of those who are having a very difficult time dealing with COVID-19: those who have it; those who are afraid of catching it; those who have to work in unsafe conditions; those who are missing out in their education because of it; and those who are caring for those who are seriously ill and those who are working to create a vaccine against it.

Sr. Joan
