Pastor’s Column

Dear Parishioners, It’s funny how dogs shake when they are dreaming. I always wonder what is going on in Glory’s dreams when she starts to shake. Is she on a roller coaster? Is she playing with another dog? Is she afraid? I often worry that she’s afraid, so I will sometimes rest my hand on her. The moment I touch her, she stops shaking. Maybe that’s us. Maybe we are busy shaking about this or that. We’re anxious, we’re worried, we’re afraid. In those moments, all we need to do is turn to God and let him rest his hand on us. The best place for this is the chapel, of course. Tomorrow is Billy Cross’s birthday. Be sure to wish him a happy birthday and say a special prayer for him. I thank God all the time that he sent Billy here. He has been a Godsend to all of us for so many reasons in the two years he has been here. We are blessed to have such a wonderful pastoral associate. Blessings and prayers, Fr. Mike

Some Confirmation Retreat Photos

We had a beautiful retreat last Saturday for our Confirmation candidates. Keep them in prayer. They will be confirmed in September. More photos next week.

Why GOD Never Received Tenure at Any University

1. He had only one major publication. 2. It was in Hebrew. 3. It had no references. 4. It wasn't published in a referred journal. 5. Some doubt He wrote it Himself. 6. "He may have created the world, but what has He done since?" 7. The scientific community can't replicate His results. 8. He never got permission from the Ethics Board to use human subjects. 9. When one experiment went awry, He tried to cover it up by drowning the subjects. 10. He rarely came to class and just told students, "Read the book." 11. Some say He had his Son teach the class. 12. He expelled His first 2 students. 13. His office hours were irregular and sometimes held on a mountain top. 14. Although there were only 10 requirements, most students failed.

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

It seems to me that every year we have a Gospel reading in which Jesus asks, “Who do you say that I am?” Each year I am reminded of the retreat that I was on during the last year of my Masters of Ministry program that was built on that theme. During that weekend in June of 1980 I was challenged to answer the question, “Who do I say Jesus is for me?” So, for the last 40 years each year I am reminded to ask myself the same question that Jesus asked his disci-ples, “Who do you say that I am?”

This week as you take time to pray, ask yourself that same question. You may answer the same way Peter did by saying that “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Or you may say that Jesus is your Friend; your daily Companion; or that you see Jesus is every person you meet. There are many ways to answer that question. Each person may have a different answer depending on their faith. My answer has changed many times during these 40 years. But, the important thing to remember is that Jesus wants a relationship with us and that Jesus cannot work miracles in our lives if we do not have the faith for them to happen. Jesus often says, “Your faith has saved you.” So, join me in praying this week for more of the faith and love that our relationship with Jesus and our Church is built upon.

Sr. Joan

September Newsletter—Aug. 23

The deadline for the September Newsletter is this Sunday, August 23rd. Please share your joys and sorrows with your Parish Family. Contact Pat at 765-265-7195 or email [email protected].

Did you know?

Each week, we are including a fact about slavery in the bulletin as a reminder of our fundamental duty to treat all as brothers and sisters in the Lord. The Catechism teaches that “enslavement of human beings, their being bought, sold and exchanged like merchandise, [is] in disregard for their personal digni-ty. It is a sin against the dignity of persons and their fundamental rights to reduce them by violence to their productive value…” (CCC 2414).

African Americans have barely any of the nation’s wealth, therefore little to pass down to future genera-tions. Economists estimate that up to 80% of lifetime wealth accumulation depends on intergenerational transfers. National Wealth owned by African Ameri-cans in 1865, just after Emancipation was 0.05%. In 1990, a full 125 years after Emancipation it was 1.0%.

Outdoor Mass On Sundays

St. Vincent will continue to have 8:30am Sunday Mass outside at Mary’s statue. Remember to bring your lawn chairs, social distance and wear a mask. In Case of Rain and we have to have Mass inside and only about 50 people can safely be in church, please know that you can hear and/or see Mass in the St. Vincent’s Hall and can hear Mass in your car on the radio station 105.3. Holy Communion will be distributed at these places during communion time. You may also watch Mass livestream in your home.

Religious Education at St. Vincent—Sept. 9

Religious Education at St. Vincent will begin on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 from 6:15 until 7:30pm for 4 yr. old pre-school through 8th grade students. The fee is $50.00 per family. Please register on line on our website: svdpcc.com.

High School Freshman will have Confirmation classes on Sunday afternoons at 4:00 – 5:30pm on the first and third Sundays of the month beginning on October 4th at St. Vincent’s school building and on October 18th at St. Joseph Cafeteria. The fee is $50.00 per student. They can then join the high- school youth group for all high school students that meets on Sundays at 6:00 – 7:30 pm. There is no fee except for special events.

If you do not plan on participating in religious educa-tion in person and want to do it at home, please con-tact Sr. Joan 812-455-9348 by phone or text. There is a plan for this also. The fee for this depends on what plan you choose.

Book Box at St. Vincent

There is a new Book Box in the corner of St. Vin-cent’s parking lot by the Hall. It is for people to trade books. Bring a book, take a book. The books can be children’s book, good novels, whatever kind you want to share. There is no limit of how many you take or if you bring them back—just enjoy.

News for Both Parishes Billy’s Bookshelf

7 Secrets of Confession by Vinny Flynn

Thinking of my next book for my bookshelf I was searching through the stack of books I have until I noticed this one in the back with a considerable amount of dust on it. When I picked it up and began to flip through the pages, my thoughts of reading this in college began to flood back into my head. It was my senior year and by this point I was getting my grades back on track, my conversion into a more matured and dedicated faith life is already starting to take off. I found this book in a bargain bin at a bookstore and saw that it had a lot of Saint Pope John Paul II quotes in it and thought to myself, “Don’t mind if I do!”

After reading through this book, I realized how wrong my view of Confession was, how incorrectly I was confessing, and simply how wrong my idea of sin and its effect on me was at the time. We all have some sort of idea of how confession works and maybe yours (which is how I thought) is along the lines of…

“I wait to go until I notice myself committing a sin that is “too bad” or my “grocery list” of sins got too long. I’d then realized I need to go to Confession, so I can receive the Eucharist. So after gathering up the courage to go, I hope the priest either doesn’t know me or doesn’t remember my past confession. Sound familiar?”

This idea may work for children to help them start out with the practice of confession but for us adults and Confirmed in the faith, this is an inaccurate way to view how sin affects us and what Confession does in our lives! This book is worth the read and I believe that every Catholic and person going to confession should pick this book up and read it! It will change your encounter with Christ in the confessional and give you a new way of thinking to combat sin and temptations in your life!

News for Both Parishes

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Update

Dear All,

Just as Fr. Keucher said in one Sunday’s homily; “All things are possible…..”.

Just think, a couple of years ago SVdP had nothing but a commitment to God that we would do what He said. We still strive to do His bidding to the best of our ability.

If only you could see the joy of most of the people that we (meaning YOU) help. We are happy that you have been supportive of SVdP. Thank you God. Amen.

Just a reminder: Donations are accepted at the warehouse only please. We just don’t have the wherewithal to accept donations at the store. The warehouse is located at 628 Hodell St., Shelbyville. First Saturday of each month from 9:00 to 11:00am. Or by appointment: [email protected] or 317-395-7027. We do get a lot of warehouse appointments and it works out really well as many of our warehouse workers can meet you most any time.

SVdP store is open each Saturday from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Thank you all again. SVdP Help Line: 317-395-7027 Email: [email protected] Website: www.svdpshelby.org Donations may be accepted through: St. Joseph Catholic Church or St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church

Bulletin Advertisers Needed

Did you know that our St. Joseph and St. Vincent Bulle-tin is printed at no cost to our parishioners? We have recently switched printers and are printing it locally. We are looking for your help to offset the printing cost by purchasing an ad. We are happy to announce St. Jo-seph and St. Vincent Church’s offices are selling ads for the Bulletin. If we are able to secure enough advertis-ers, we will be able to provide the Bulletin and some-times, print it in color for special occasions at no cost to parishioners. If you would like to place an ad in our weekly Bulletin, there are 3 different sizes and prices for a six month ad: Small ad (business card size): $ 400.00 ($15.39 a wk) Quarter page ad: $ 750.00 ($28.85 a wk) 1/2 page ad: $1350.00 ($51.92 a wk)
