The Lord hears the cry of the Poor

In the First Reading, Prophet Amos castigates the rich in Israel not so much for their ivory seats or golden vessels, but for their neglect of the ruin of Joseph. By Joseph Amos means their poor brothers and sisters, fellow Israelites. We recall in the book of Genesis how the sons of Jacob sold their brother Joseph in slavery, insensitive to his plea for mercy and to his misery. The rich in their revelry forget that the poor are their own flesh and blood. In the entire Gospel of Luke, Jesus is the very compassion of the Lord. He calls the poor blessed, not because of their poverty, but that in spite of their poverty, they find time to follow Him and listen to His word. In his life, ministry and teaching Jesus is the embodiment of the eternal mercy of the loving and compassionate God. The rich man in today’s Gospel is the very opposite of compassion. He lives luxuriously and enjoying good things of life, but completely unmindful of the wretched and poor man Lazarus lying at his door. Lazarus longs to fill himself with scraps that fell from the rich man’s table, but he was offered absolutely nothing. The gospel seems to imply that the man’s dogs are better than the rich man himself, because at least they lick the sores, the wounds of Lazarus. “What is the sin of the rich man?” His sin was that he never noticed Lazarus; that he accepted him as ordinarily part of the landscape and simply thought it perfectly natural that Lazarus should suffer in pain and hunger while he lived in luxury and comfort. The rich man completely ignored the poor man. His was the sin of omission. Jesuit Father Jon Sobrino wrote a book entitled: “No Salvation outside the Poor. This title states an inconvenient truth and challenges us to notice, move our hearts and extend our hands to the needs of the poor around us. Our attitude to the poor reveals our attitude to God who hears the cry of the poor and carries them to bosom of Abraham in the Eternal dwelling of His Kingdom! God bless! Fr. Cesar
