There is a variety of methods of working.

There is a sense of working together in a social environment to ena-ble both children and adults to develop relationships.

Adults and children are physically and emotionally comfortable.

Our Curriculum

At St Joseph's School we aim to provide a curriculum that is exciting, challenging and motivating and it is underpinned by our ethos including relationships.

It is the responsibility of teaching staff to meet the needs of all pupils. Aims:

The national curriculum provides pupils with an introduction to the essential knowledge that they need to be educated citizens.

The national curriculum is just one element in the education of every child. There is time and space in the school day and in each week, term and year to explore beyond the national curriculum specifications. The national curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge and skills around which teachers can develop exciting and stimulating lessons to promote the development of pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills as part of the wider school curriculum. Structure:

Pupils of compulsory school age in voluntary aided schools must follow the national curriculum which is comprised of Key Stages. Schools are free to choose how they organise their school day, as long as the content of national curriculum is taught to all pupils. In our Primary School we have Key Stages 1 & 2. A foreign language is taught in Key Stage 2.

Our curriculum is supported through the use of: Education City, Espresso and Purple Mash The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Children in Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum in which learning and development is organised into prime and specific areas as set out below:

Prime Areas

Personal, Social and Emotional Development including Making relationships, Self-confidence and self-awareness and Managing feelings and behaviour

Physical Development including Moving and handling and Health and self-care

Communication and Language including Listening and at-tention, Understanding and Speaking

Specific Areas

Literacy including Reading and Writing

Mathematics including Numbers and Space, shape and measure

Understanding the World including People and communi-ties, The world and Technology

Expressive Arts and Design including Exploring and using media and materials and Being imaginative

At St Joseph’s we teach children by ensuring that we provide challenging, learning opportunities across these areas of development. We provide opportunities to encourage children to foster the characteristics of effective early learning.

Characteristics of Learning:

Playing and exploring Active Learning Creating and thinking critically

Religious Education

St Joseph's is a voluntary aided Catholic school where “Christian Ethics” permeate the whole curriculum. All children who attend St Joseph's School are expected to participate fully in the religious life of the school. Every age group follows a published religious scheme called “Come and See”, which is a structured programme used nationally in many primary schools.

The scheme follows the liturgical year of the Church, where the central theme is the Christian belief in Jesus Christ as the word and Revelation of God. Each term basic themes are explored within the Catholic faith tradition, which is complemented by the religious traditions in our homes and parishes. The different themes of the scheme are studied by the whole school over a short period which provides continuity and progression. These programmes provide opportunities for celebration, prayer and reflection through assemblies, Masses and prayer services.

The religious life of the school enables children to explore and experience a deepening of their faith and an awareness of the needs of the world today. Throughout Advent and Lent the children are encouraged to contribute in various ways to charitable causes.

Children may be withdrawn from Collective Worship and R.E lessons on the grounds of religious belief. However, the governors are anxious that there should be minimal disruption to the school curriculum. If parents have any cause for concern in such matters, it is essential that they are discussed with the Headteacher before the child is admitted to the school.

Education in Personal Relationships

Education in Personal Relationships (EPR) is a framework for personal, social, moral, health and citizenship education.

It aims to develop children in the following areas:

Developing confidence and responsibility and making the most of their abilities

Preparing to play an active role as citizens

Developing a healthy, safe lifestyle

Developing good relationships and respecting the differences between people

Much of EPR is taught through the Religious Education Programme of ‘Come and See’ and specific links with topics are identified. Further aspects are covered through other areas of the curriculum, The SEAL resource is used to support the learning in those areas related to feelings, emotions and behaviour. Teaching resources provided by CAFOD and Fairtrade are also used.

Relationships and Sex Education

Relationships and Sex Education is taught to all ages throughout the school at an age appropriate level. It includes health education, sex education, moral and social interaction.

We use a resource called ‘A Journey in Love’ created by Sister Jude Groden. It is the recommended programme of study for Catholic schools for Relationship and Sex Education, and has been written as a progressive scheme of work that supports the Religious Education, EPR and Science curricula taught within the school.

As children progress through school, they discover more and more about themselves and the wider world. This thirst for learning new things in all aspects of life is fostered by the school, who attempt to create a safe, stimulating environment for learning; supporting all children in their development. Our mission statement which drives the school, attempts to achieve this goal following the Gospel values of truth and respect, understanding our journey as children of God, both special and unique.

Central to our work within the school is learning about our faith, including understanding ourselves, our position in our community and how we develop as human beings - our spiritual, social, emotional and physical development. This is how ‘A Journey in Love’ fits in to the school’s curriculum. The scheme supports all levels of learning throughout the school. It focuses on friendship, family, community, relationships and spirituality; a guide to the children’s development as young Catholics.

Further information about this programme, including resources, can be found on our VLE.

Parents have the right to withdraw their children from Sex Education should they wish to do so. Please contact the Headteacher in these circumstances. There can be no withdrawal from the Science National Curriculum.

Science

St Joseph's approach to Science in the National Curriculum is subject based, but with the opportunity for the class teacher to use a cross-curricular approach where appropriate.

This facilitates a variety of teaching methods including class, group and individual teaching.

The children will experience the National Curriculum through observation, investigation and discovery.

Pupils should meet each area (observation, investigation and discovery) at least three times during their Primary Education to enable progression and depth. The use of the investigations and explorations at different levels provides the pupil with the opportunity to develop both individual initiative and the skills needed for teamwork.

English

English is an essential key to learning across the curriculum and, as a life skill, is a vital tool for communication. At St Joseph’s English is taught through cross-curricular links with Foundation Subjects, which enables the children to have a clear purpose for their speaking and listening, reading and writing. Through these creative cross-curricular links, St Joseph’s aims to develop the pupils’ ability in reading, writing, speaking and listening with a rich variety of experiences. Progression in these curriculum areas is ensured through the development of pupils’ competency in an increasing range of language types and styles.

The school approaches the teaching of English through the following ways with appropriate differentiation to meet the needs of all learners:

Modelled and Guided Writing by the class teacher

Shared writing in groups

Phonics (Jolly Phonics)

Guided Reading (Rigby)

Learning of spellings in an interactive, sensory and visual way

Drama, role play and performance poetry activities

Speaking and listening

Appropriate intervention

Application of writing skills learnt to ‘Big Writing’ tasks

Grammar and punctuation

Reading

A strong parent-school partnership is recognised as fundamentally important in fostering reading competency and promoting reading as an enjoyable and purposeful activity. Reading is taught through a variety of approaches in order to develop the range of essential skills. The pupil’s developing independence as a reader is supported by a structured reading scheme which offers a range of stimulating picture books and then progressive introduction to vocabulary. Reading experience is broadened through pupils choosing from a wide variety of other quality books.

Independent readers are given the opportunity to study the work of significant children’s authors in increasing depth.

Schemes that we use at St Joseph’s School are:

Oxford Reading Tree

Project X Code

Totem Talisman

Dandelion Readers

Music Music is usually taught as a class activity. Our aim is to enable all children to enjoy music through the development of listening skills and musical appreciation. Children are encouraged to compose and perform both vocal and instrumental pieces and are introduced to a wide variety of styles.

Mathematics

St Joseph’s has embedded the new National Curriculum for Mathematics into their teaching and learning since September 2014. It is taught as a discrete subject every day from Reception through to Year 6. We recognise how essential it is to everyday life; high quality teaching and providing real and meaningful problems is paramount.

Aims:

The new National Curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including the varied and regular practice of increasingly complex problems over time.

Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, understanding relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.

Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

We focus on a range of different areas: Number and Place Value, Calculation (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division), Fractions (including decimals and percentages), Geometry, Statistics and Measurement.

Year 6 will have an additional focus on Algebra, Ratio and Proportion.

We have a new focus on problem solving this year where each child has a ‘problem solving assessment book’. This highlights to class teachers whether or not children can apply their knowledge and understanding, discuss their thoughts and ideas, explain their thinking and demonstrate a ‘deeper’ understanding which will show fluency in mathematics.

We see it as our duty to offer each child a broad and balanced experience of these areas at a level which fosters progression on the basis of understanding. Children are generally taught within their own class, in flexible ability groups, to meet each child’s needs. Tasks are then taught through class, group and individual strategies. Continual assessment enables teachers to recognise and focus on individual needs. Each child has their own ‘I Can’ card which gives them the opportunity to take ownership over their own learning and progress.

Design Technology

Design Technology is met within a cross-curricular approach in which we aim to develop the children’s skills as they progress.

Design Technology involves the investigation of a need and the skills of planning, making and evaluating to realise it practically. DT is taught using a wide range of media. e.g. clay, textiles, wood, paper and construction materials.

Geography

Geography is taught through a cross-curricular approach, or as a separate subject where appropriate.

We have endeavoured to match geography with other related subjects, e.g. Science to ensure a depth of experience without unnecessary duplication.

We cover the Geography National Curriculum through a series of projects looking at both:

The Local Environment, and

The Wider World Children have the opportunity to develop their studies further a field during residential field trips.

Map work skills are developed throughout the school. Many aspects introduced in Key Stage 1 are revisited and further developed in Key Stage 2.

Children in Year 6 and Year 4 have the opportunity to develop their studies further during residential trips.

Computing

Computing is an ever changing challenge to pupils, staff and parents. It is taught as a discrete subject where specific skills are taught to children to prepare them for the future use of technology. These include: Programming, E- Safety, Handling Data, Multimedia and Technology in our Lives.

Where possible teachers make links between Computing work and other areas of the curriculum. Computing aims to develop children to become digital citizens (who are safe and responsible), digital communicators (who are digitally literate) and digital creators (who are logical and creative).

Interactive white boards and visualisers are used to support the children’s learning in all classrooms. All teaching areas are networked, incorporating pupil access to the internet and peripheral equipment such as digital cameras. We also have learn pads that can be used in all areas of the curriculum.

In addition to classroom provision we have a dedicated computer suite to enable whole class learning.

History

History is taught through the topic approach. Each year group focuses upon different aspects throughout the year. We aim to develop the children’s historical understanding through the use of artefacts and secondary sources in order to foster research skills and an empathy with the past.

Specialist historical groups visit the school to provide the children with a variety of experiences related to the historical period they are studying. This enables them to become active in their learning through the use of role-play.

French

Children in Key Stage Two are encouraged to develop an awareness of the French language and culture, and to acquire a grasp of basic grammar. The aim is to foster enjoyment and interest in a foreign language and to build confidence in speaking through basic conversational vocabulary.

Physical Education

P.E. is an integral part of the school curriculum. We aim to provide an enjoyable and balanced programme, by following the Real PE scheme of work from Create Development. Alongside this children will also develop their skills and understanding of competitive team games (e.g. netball and cricket) as well as outdoor and adventurous activities, dance and gymnastics. Within PE lessons children are provided with the opportunity to develop their ‘multi-abilities’ which are: cognitive, health and fitness, personal, social, physical and creative skills. Within the physical multi-abilities’, our main focus is improving agility, balance and coordination.

The development of confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of one’s own and others’ strengths and weaknesses are an essential part of our teaching.

The school is fortunate to have two multi-purpose halls and extensive outdoor facilities including grass areas and an all-weather pitch, as well as hard playing surfaces.

All children in Key Stage One and Year 4 have the opportunity to swim, with weekly sessions at the pool in Donyngs Leisure Centre for a term throughout the year.

Art At St Joseph's the children are given the opportunity to explore a variety of media working in both two and three dimensions. Our aims throughout the school are the ongoing development of visual literacy, and to foster an appreciation of artistic traditions and ethnic heritage. Skills necessary to achieve these aims are taught throughout the Key Stages.

Children are encouraged to observe and appreciate the work of a variety of artists.

Art is taught either as a class or group activity and is at times related to the class topic.

Clubs St Joseph's offers a range of cultural and sporting activities. These clubs take place during lunch hour and after school. Permission slips are required for after school attendance. The clubs vary according to the availability of staff, but may include sport, music and drama opportunities.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Many children require special educational provision at some time during their school lives. These children may have needs over an extended period or have short term needs. These may be academic, emotional, physical or behavioural. Such needs can usually be met in the classroom with the co-operation of the child, parent and teacher.

A child who continues to experience difficulties with work will be started on the Surrey Graduated Approach to Assessment, in line with the Code of Practice for Special Educational Needs.

For some children it may be necessary to involve outside agencies to assess and give further guidance. Parents will be involved at each stage of this process.

Some children have an Education Health and Care Plan, and follow a programme of work devised for their particular needs.

Able children are provided for through differentiation and extension work within class.

Assessment

At St Joseph's we perceive Assessment to be an integral part of the learning process. Assessment provides information about the experience and achievement of the pupil, identifying what the pupil knows, understands, and can do.

Assessment helps the teacher to plan for the next stage in the pupil’s educational development. Continuous assessment plays an important part in each teacher’s planning of the curriculum. At the end of each academic year the children complete assessments to support their next steps of learning. At the end of each Key Stage the children complete the assessment arrangements in line with Government policy.

Homework

All children are expected to set aside some time after school for homework. This will vary from the youngest children practising their reading for 10 minutes daily and their sounds for 10 minutes daily to the 10-11 year olds who will have approximately 60 minutes work to complete each evening.

Parents’ co-operation is essential to ensure that pupils benefit from the work that is set.

Charging for School Activities

St Joseph's provides varied opportunities for pupils to take part in educational visits and activities. The cost of these can only be met by voluntary contributions from parents. If sufficient contributions are not forthcoming the trip may have to be cancelled, in which case your contributions will be refunded.

The Governors have agreed a policy for charging for school activities. Full details of this policy are available from the school office on request.

School Documents Should parents wish to view LEA or DFE documents relating to school organisation or curriculum the Headteacher will be happy to make these available and to discuss them.

Any complaint or grievance about the school curriculum should in the first instance be addressed to the Headteacher. When necessary, details of the complaints procedure are available from the school office.

Pastoral Care

All children at St Joseph's are made aware that all staff are willing to help and support them with any problem which they may encounter in school or indeed at home. As a Catholic School we aim to envelop the children within a framework of a caring family to enjoy their successes and support their difficulties.

Rewards and Commendations Children need to be encouraged to achieve high standards in behaviour and work. Praise and commendation is given whenever the staff see the opportunity. Every Friday a certificate for ‘Pupil of the Week’ is awarded to a child in each class. It is given for effort in behaviour or in a specific area in the curriculum.

Achievement in areas outside the school will be commended at Friday’s assembly.

At Key Stage 2 children enjoy a ‘House System’, children are allocated to a house. House points are given for effort in work or behaviour. A cup is awarded weekly to the House with the most points. Competition is a good incentive.

Book prizes are given every term to a child in each class for good effort.

Behaviour It is expected that children will follow the aims and ethos of our school with the guidance of staff, parents and other adults responsible for their wellbeing.

We believe that children respond well if they know what is expected of them and when there is a clear limit with regard to behaviour.

Children need to be encouraged to achieve high standards in behaviour and work. St Joseph's fosters a positive attitude through praise, awards and commendations.

A class Behaviour Book is kept, where instances of both pleasing and disappointing behaviour are recorded and monitored regularly.

If a pupil does not achieve our expected standards of behaviour a variety of strategies will be adopted to help the child. In the event of there being no improvement, parents will be notified so that together we can resolve the situation.

Absences The school must be notified of all absences by leaving a message on the answer phone or by telephoning the office on the first day of absence. A letter is required on the child’s return to school. All absences without reported explanations will be recorded as “unauthorised absences” in the school registers. No child is allowed to leave school during school hours without prior knowledge through a written note to the class teacher. These children must then be signed out by the parent in the book beside the School Office.

Any time out of school disrupts the continuity of pupils’ education.

Holidays cannot be taken during school time. However, if time is required in term time, a ‘leave of absence’ form must be completed. These should be collected from and returned to the school office.

Each application will need to be considered by the Head teacher. No days will be authorised for holidays during term time. Any such leave will be recorded as an unauthorised absence, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Exclusion Exclusion is very rare and only occurs following serious concerns. In the event of this happening the exclusion will follow the recognised legal procedures.

Education Welfare Officer Our Education Welfare Officer is responsible for school attendance and visits the school each term. The officer can be contacted at the South East Area Education Office, Surrey County Council, 5/7 Queensway, Redhill, Surrey RH1 1YB

School Health - Medical Examinations Key Stage 1 Medical checks for weight and height are held during the first year at school.

Key Stage 2 Medical reviews are subsequently held in Year 6 for the ten to eleven year olds.

Parents are informed of the date and time of the medical checks and are asked for their consent.

Reminders of immunisation programmes and vaccinations, e.g. Flu, will be sent to parents.

Parents are advised that headlice are very prevalent in schools these days and regular checks should be made.

Medicines If it is essential to take prescribed medicines during the day the medicine must be brought to the school office by a parent, and an ’Administration of Medicines’ form must be filled in giving details of dosage, times, and parental consent etc.

School Lunches and Snacks

We are fortunate that School dinners are prepared on the premises. Payment should be made weekly in advance on Mondays or can be paid half-termly or termly. If you are in receipt of income support, tax credits or working tax credits and are eligible for free school meals please contact the school office for an application form. All information will be dealt with in confidence. All children in KS1 will be receiving a universal free school meal. Therefore, no payment for KS1 children will be required. Packed lunches may be brought if preferred for KS2, however one half-term’s notice is required in writing if any arrangements are to change.

Only fruit is allowed for mid-morning snacks. The children are encouraged to bring a bottle of water to school.

Fire Practice School Fire Drills are carried out on a regular basis and children are made aware of procedure and a class list is available in every classroom.

Uniform We have a simple school uniform which we expect the children to wear as it develops a sense of pride and belonging in themselves and their school.

The current list is to be found at the back of this brochure.

Lost Property This is always a problem in School. It is therefore essential that all items of clothing and belongings are clearly marked. Items left at school are held in the lost property box in the foyer at the front of the school.

Jewellery Jewellery, including friendship bracelets, may not be worn. It is accepted that those children with pierced ears wear plain gold studs but parents are reminded that these present a potentially serious hazard. All studs must be removed by the child for Physical Education activities.

If your child cannot remove their own studs they should not be worn in school. From Year 3 onwards children may wear an inexpensive watch but the School does not accept responsibility for lost studs or watches. Neither make-up nor nail varnish is permitted.

Finally We look forward to welcoming your child to our school and working with you.
