St. Joseph Parish The Vigil July 19th, 2020 ROONEY TUNES RACISM IS A SIN: For the last couple of months we have been hearing, or reading, a lot about ‘racism’. I think that most of us have an idea of what the word means, but maybe hard pressed to define it. Recently, His Holiness Pope Francis wrote: we cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism and exclusion in any form and yet claim to defend the sacredness of every human life. What is this sin? It is prejudice, discriminaon, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a parcular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a mi- nority or marginalized. Again, the belief that different races possess disnct characteriscs, abilies, or qualies, especially so as to disn- guish them as inferior or superior to one anoth- er. His Holiness went on to quote the Archbishop of Los Angeles in stang: violence is self- destrucve and self-defeang. Nothing is gained by violence and so much is lost. I have to confess, that as a teenager growing up in Belfast, in the midst of unbridled prejudice and bigotry against the Catholic minority, I engaged in riong and the destrucon of common property. Why? Be- cause of the uer frustraon experienced. We felt that we had no other means of showing our disgust and anger at the civil government. I’m not trying to jusfy violence, but I certainly un- derstand why people take to the streets to ex- press their anger. If you have never been part of a discriminated minority it would be difficult for you to understand where I’m coming from. It’s not arrogance on my part, it’s simply a fact. KEEPING MY RELIGION: Recently I was reading an interview with the novelist Ann Patche. She reflects that the lives of the saints inspire us to be beer than we are, but those same qualies that make them role models in the Church – their intensity of focus on living out gospel values, and their refusal to compromise – can be experi- enced as something else when it is within their own families. That is the theme of Patche’s lat- est novel, The Dutch House (Bloomsbury 2020). Though she has her disagreements with the Church, Patche never shies away from talking about her religion – even when quesoners begin with, ‘How can you remain a Catholic when…?’ For her, religion is like your family and your country. She is firm about Catholicism as her religion. She goes on to say that Catholicism is not her faith, it’s not her relaonship to God, but it is her religion. In an interesng observa- on, she goes on to say that she feels people are throwing away their religion because they can’t throw away their family and their country. CARYLL HOUSELANDER: 1901-54 No doubt, one who loved men as Christ did would have longed to heal all their sickness, to enlighten all their minds, to transform the world by miracle upon miracle of love, but God did not will that for him. On the contrary, he willed that he should be, humanly speaking, a failure, should be nailed to the cross and suffer there in help- lessness. Indeed, the moment in which his love was consummated, in which the crisis of his re- deeming power was reached, was when the hands that could heal with a touch were nailed back out of reach. (The Leers of Caryll House- lander, Ed. Maisie Ward; Sheed and Ward, 1965) FAMILIES OF PARISHES: You will have heard by now that within this new system of parish life, our parish has been placed in a ‘family’ with Sts. Timothy, Cyprian and Sacred Heart, Grosse Ile. What does it mean? Next week, I’ll aempt to try and spell it out a bit more! In the meanme, know that you are being held in prayer. God Bless. Stephen Rooney

Registration for the 2020-21 Faith Formation is ongoing. Please contact the Parish Office for a registration packet, or email me your inquiry. We welcome all new and existing families to reg-ister at this time. Our Confirmation Students are preparing to finally celebrate this last of the Sacraments of Ini-tiation. We have offered families five mass times to choose from beginning this month, through September. Please keep our Confirmandi in your prayers as their date approaches. Thank God ahead of time…Have you taken a Pilgrimage to the Solanus Casey Center in Detroit yet? If not, I believe it is a “must see” for every Catholic in our area. Here you learn about Fr. Solanus’ humble life as a Simplex Priest (not able to preach or hear confessions), which placed him, humbly, as a Porter (door-keeper). Seen as a lowly job by many, the position Fr. Solanus held al-lowed him to greet thousands of people who came to St. Bona-venture Monastery in Detroit looking for prayers and counseling for their problems in life. As a result of these meetings, God worked through Fr. Solanus and offered countless miraculous healings. Such an account is what has led the Vatican to declare Fr. Solanus Blessed, the second to last step in the process of be-ing declared a Saint. His Beatification Mass was held at Ford Field in November 2017. What a blessing it is to learn about God’s providence through Fr. Solanus, right here in our area. Walking around the Center you will find his tomb, a place of reflection and prayer and a muse-um focusing on his life and the life of the Capuchins in the early 1900’s. Daily Confession is al-so offered. Fr. Solanus is always there to intercede for us whenever we are in need. For more information on the location or hours of the Solanus Casey Center/St. Bonaventure Monastery, visit www.solanuscenter.org.

Vacation Bible School, originally scheduled for this month, has been postponed to next sum-mer. God’s Blessing for the week ahead, Dennae Petrlich, Director of Faith Formation

In early April, Dave Allen began to make and distribute bag lunches to 15-30 clients daily. He does not need any volunteer helpers at this time. Also, no definite decision has been made on where to move the Soup Kitchen program. I will stay in touch with Dave to see what his needs are for August. If you have any questions, please call me.
