St. Joseph Parish The Vigil August 16th, 2020
ROONEY TUNES COVID-19 DEATHS: A couple of weeks into the pandemic I had been presiding at funerals at the local funeral homes. Most of the deceased died as a result of the virus, others of natural causes. The parish office maintained a listing of the de-ceased, which along with your prayer intentions, was placed on the altar during Mass. The parish is planning to celebrate a Mass for all those who died during the early months of this year. No date has been set yet, I’ll let you know as soon as one has been set.
FUNERAL MASSES: Praying for the dead has been and continues to be a central tenet of our faith. We share this theological perspective with the Churches in the Orthodox tradition. For us Ro-man Catholics, our praying for the dead is bound inseparably with the Church’s doctrine of Purga-tory and our belief in the Communion of Saints. Purgatory (Latin: purgare, to make clean, to puri-fy); is a temporary state of cleansing for those who died not entirely free from sin, who leave this life not having confessed transgressions. Through the history of the Christian faith certain groups have rejected the doctrine of purgatory. The modern Orthodox Church denies the doctrine however, they continue the tradition of praying for the dead at every liturgy.
WHY PRAY FOR THE DEAD? If we don’t believe in the power of prayer to afford solace to our be-loved departed. Praying for the dead has been part of the Christian faith from the very begin-ning. The Second Book of Maccabees tells how the commander Judas sent a collection to Jerusa-lem for a sacrifice to be offered for the sins of the dead (2Mac: 12;38-46). 1Cor:3;11-15 is under-stood by the early Christian writers as evidence for the existence of an intermediate state in which the dross of lighter transgressions will be purified. The souls in purgatory are not separated from the Church, the love which is our bond of
union embraces those who have died. Because of this bond of union, we hold in faith, that our prayers and sacrifices help those who are still waiting in purgatory. The souls of the departed can receive “solace and refreshment” through the Eucharist, prayer and almsgiving. The belief that love can reach into the afterlife, that recip-rocal giving and receiving is possible, in which our affection for one another continues beyond the limits of death – this has been a fundamental conviction of Christianity throughout the ages and it remains a source of comfort today. Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord……….
PRINCE OF HUMANISTS: Some of you may have heard of the great Dutch Renaissance priest-scholar Erasmus 14691536. He enjoyed the nick-name ‘Prince of Humanists’ and being called ‘the crowning glory of the Christian humanists.’ Eras-mus lived against the backdrop of the growing European religious Reformation. He was certainly critical of the abuses within the Church and called for reform, he nonetheless kept his dis-tance from Luther, Henry VIII and John Calvin. He continued to recognize the authority of the Pope, emphasizing a middle way with deep respect for traditional faith, piety and grace and rejected Luther's emphasis on faith alone. After he had made a pilgrimage to the Marian shrine in Wal-singham, England Erasmus wrote: O alone of all women, Mother and Virgin, Mother most happy, Virgin most pure, now we, sinful as we are, come to see thee who are all pure, we salute thee, we honour thee as how we may with our humble offerings. May thy Son grant us, that imitating thy most holy manners, we also by the grace of the Holy Ghost may deserve spiritually to con-ceive the Lord Jesus in our inmost soul, and once conceived never to lose him. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace…. Stephen Rooney.
