“PUSHED” OUT ON MISSION There is a delightful character in the original Dr. Dolittle Tales called the “Pushmi-Pullyu.” It is a beast with two identical halves, with a head at each end. No matter which direction the beast walks, one end is the “push me” and the other is the “pull you.” Today’s feast is a bit like that in the life of the church. In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, it is the ascension of Christ that calls for the Holy Spirit, which consequently sends or “pushes” the church out on its mission. This is the message that we hear from the angels today as they tell the friends of Jesus not to look up into the clouds, but to get busy. It is the message of Jesus himself in Matthew’s Gospel, as he sends them out to baptize. He also tells them, “I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). And it is this message, confident in faith that Jesus has ascended to shouts of joy, that “pulls” us along to our final destiny. The life of the faithful disciple, sent into the world on mission, will one day know the same risen, ascended glory. © J. S. Paluch Co. ATTENTION LITURGICAL MINISTERS

Liturgical Ministers will not be serving as we deal with this pandemic. Fr. Ed and Deacon Gerry will be doing the readings and distributing Communion (no reception of the Precious Blood from chalice). Ushers will be positioned at the back of the church

to assist with appropriate spacing requirements. Collection basket and bulletins will be available in the Narthex. Our sacristan will handle Mass set-up.

STEWARDSHIP WAY OF LIFE SUNDAY COLLECTION (5/17): $2,779.82 ONLINE GIVING (5/17): $2,779.82 WEEKLY AMOUNT NEEDED: $6,125.00 OVER/UNDER: +$ 374.82 # OF ENVELOPES & ONLINE: 90 (of 410) SINCERE SYMPATHY

MASS INTENTIONS All Mass intentions that had been scheduled during the time that no Masses were taking place will be rescheduled. Since the number of Masses are reduced, more than one intention will be said at each Mass. Watch the bulletin for your Mass intentions. CARILLON MEMORIALS

Carillon Memorials are always welcome to memorialize or honor those special people in your life or

mark events. A $20.00 donation will reserve your date for which the Angelus and seasonal hymns will ring both at noon and at 6:00 p.m. Please contact the Parish Office to schedule your Carillon Memorials.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION There was a curious custom years ago that perhaps developed in an age when Easter was seen less as a baptismal season than as a kind of tour through the deeds of the Risen Christ. The paschal candle, sign of Christ’s presence, was removed from public view on Ascension Thursday, banished to the baptistery. Ascension day does speak of the hidden aspects of Christ’s life among us, but it does not have much to do with God’s absence. Christ has not shed his human life like an inconvenient shell, but rather has taken humanity into heaven. The theologian Karl Rahner said that it is a festival of “the nearness of God.” In vanishing from our sight, Christ has become utterly available to all at every time and every place, and is “closer to us than he ever was.” Today is the feast of believing that beyond our final breath is a presence that waits for us, a banquet prepared, a tender homecoming embrace. Rahner said that today is a festival of the future of the world, a day for anticipating the world’s true destiny, and therefore hardly a day to be going around hiding candles!

Page 3: ST. JOSEPH PARISH...2020/05/24  · May 31, (9:00 a.m. Mass only) and weekday Masses resume on June 2 (8:00 a.m. Tuesdays only). The Worship Office of the Diocese of Youngstown, in

Dear St. Joseph Parishioners & Friends, As the “Responsible Restart Ohio Plan” is implemented during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, allowing a gradual return to work and lifting of some of the restrictions regarding consumer, retail and services, the Catholic Bishops of the State of Ohio have announced directives for the safe return to the public celebration of Mass. On May 8, the priests of the Diocese of Youngstown were informed by Bishop George V. Murry, S.J. that we will begin celebrating Mass again with our people. St. Joseph Church weekend Masses will begin again on Pentecost Sunday, May 31, (9:00 a.m. Mass only) and weekday Masses resume on June 2 (8:00 a.m. Tuesdays only). The Worship Office of the Diocese of Youngstown, in consultation with Liturgical Commissions throughout the dioceses of Ohio, has provided Directives and Guidelines for the Diocese of Y oungstown outlining the safe practices and procedures we must implement for the resumption of public liturgies. These directives/guidelines currently remain in effect by order of Bishop Murry and will be revised or changed should any further directives be issued by the Governor of Ohio, the Bishops of Ohio, or Bishop Murry. They are considered to be temporary until it is determined safe to return to the normal circumstances.

Understanding the desire of many to return to church, it remains important for those who are at greater risk to refrain from returning until such time they feel comfortable and confident to do so. Those who are symptomatic or who have been exposed to another with the virus within 14 days should not attend Mass in accordance with national, state and local health directives. Those over 60 years of age and those who are vulnerable as a result of illness (including people who have chronic lung disease or moderate to severe asthma, serious heart conditions, comprised immune system, severe obesity, diabetes, chronic kidney or liver disease) should be extra diligent in practicing precautions like frequent hand washing, social distancing, regularly cleaning surfaces, and staying home. As we gather on May 31st, Masses at St. Joseph’s will look and feel different . . .

• Both the entrance doors and sanctuary doors will be propped open to avoid touching. • Appropriate cleaning of high use areas within the church is to be done before and after each service. • Holy water fonts at the entrances remain empty until further notice. • Collection basket and bulletins will be made available in the Narthex. • Every effort to ensure appropriate physical distancing before, during, and after liturgical celebrations is

required. There will be no gathering in the Narthex. Ushers will be positioned at the back of the church to assist with appropriate spacing requirements. Church capacity will be limited to 200 people.

• Those attending Mass are asked to wear masks or face coverings. Hand sanitizer will be available. • There will be no music and hymnals have been removed and stored for the time being. • Liturgical Ministers will not be serving. Deacon Gerry and I will be doing the readings and distributing

Communion (no reception of the Precious Blood from the chalice). • Physical contact during the Lord’s Prayer and the Sign of Peace is suspended. Those present are

encouraged to bow to others and offer words of peace. • Appropriate spacing between individuals in the Communion Procession is to be maintained. • When approaching the minister, the communicant is to pull their mask below their chin. After “Body of

Christ” is said, the host is carefully placed in the hand avoiding any incidental contact. Communicants, after responding, “Amen,” reverently place the Eucharist in their mouth and replace their mask.

• No other large gatherings will be permitted on the premises until further notice. • Parishioners are encouraged to continue viewing Mass online or TV if not attending in person.

May the Lord bless us and His entire human family throughout the world, and keep us all safe and well.

Peace be with you!

DISPENSATION FROM THE OBLIGATION TO ATTEND SUNDAY MASS The Catholic faithful who reside in the Diocese of Youngstown and all other Catholics in the diocese and especially those who are sick, or at high risk of becoming sick continue to be dispensed from their Sunday obligation until further notice.

Page 4: ST. JOSEPH PARISH...2020/05/24  · May 31, (9:00 a.m. Mass only) and weekday Masses resume on June 2 (8:00 a.m. Tuesdays only). The Worship Office of the Diocese of Youngstown, in

As of May 14th our parish has achieved 27% participation towards our goal of 100% participation with 137 households contributing $28,468.00. There are three ways in which you can participate: PRAY for the success of the Annual Bishop’s Appeal; DONATE

to the Appeal; VOLUNTEER your time and talents to any of the ministries of the Church. Please submit a completed response card or pew envelope as all responses count towards our parish participation goal. Thank you in advance for your reflection and generous response to the Annual Appeal. HELP OUT OUR ADVERTISERS Our Sunday bulletin is an important way for us to communicate with you, especially during these days of the Coronavirus pandemic. It might be the only way that we can reach some of you. Every bulletin that you receive is paid for through the generosity of the businesses that you see advertised. Most of these advertisers are members of our local community, and many belong to our parish. We urge you to think of them when you decide to have a meal or other item delivered to your door. Tell the business owners that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertisements in the bulletin. This is one small way that we can work within our own community to weather the challenges that we face. Together we can help each other make it through. © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

ALUMINUM CAN RECYCLING

The Fundraising Committee is continuing an easy way to generate some funds for parish improvements through recycling aluminum cans. Collect your clean cans in plastic bags, crushing if possible, and deposit in the designated container in front of the church. They will be picked up every

weekend. Thank you in advance for your participation. If you would like to assist in any of our fundraisers, please contact John or Debbie Kruis (330-618-3604 or 330-221-0272).

PARISH IMPROVEMENT APPRECIATED Some much needed patching of St. Joseph Blvd. and our parking lot took place this past week thanks to the services of Todd Lamb and donation of materials from Lakeside Sand & Gravel. Thank you!

Did You Know . . . . . The last time our parking lot and drives were paved was back in 1996?! Thanks to a cell tower agreement with GTE, the parish received a lump sum of $80,000.00 allowing St. Joseph Blvd., the parking lot, and all of the driveways to be paved after many years of deterioration (cell tower company has since changed and agreement renegotiated allowing us additional revenue over the years). Fundraising efforts (such as the Lottery Raffle and aluminum cans), donations, and money set aside in our Renovation Fund will allow us to take on this much needed project as soon funding permits. If you’d like to donate toward this effort, use the green Special Contribution Envelope in your contribution packet and designate it to Building & Grounds Maintenance. You may also give online at https://giving.parishsoft.com/dl/?uid=stj1104203.

AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE St. Joseph’s will host a Blood Drive on Monday, June 8, 1:00-6:00 p.m. At this time, you must make an appointment to donate. Simply visit www.redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). You are encouraged to complete your RapidPass questionnaire prior to your appointment on your donation day. There’s also a free Red Cross Blood App available for download on devices through Ap StoreSM and Google Play™ (or text “BLOODAPP” to 90999).

The top priority of the Red Cross is the safety of donors, volunteers, employees and blood recipients, and they are committed to transparency with the American public during this evolving public health emergency of the Coronavirus Pandemic. At each blood drive or donation center, Red Cross employees follow thorough safety protocols, including:

• Wearing gloves and changing them often • Wiping down donor-touched areas after every collection • Using sterile collection sets for every donation • Preparing the arm for donation with aseptic scrub • Conducting donor mini-physicals to ensure donors are healthy and

well on day of donation

They have also increased their vigilance concerning some of these safety protocols including:

• Enhanced disinfecting of surfaces and equipment • Providing hand sanitizer for use before entering and throughout the

donation appointment • Temperature checks before presenting donors enter the blood drive

or donation center • Following social distancing practices between donors including

donor beds, as well as waiting and refreshment areas • Staff wearing basic face masks • For the safety of our donor community and in accordance with CDC

guidelines, all donors are required to wear a face covering or mask. Please bring a face covering or mask to your donation. If you do not have one, a mask will be provided to you.

• To ensure staff are healthy each day, they have implemented standard staff health assessments prior to all blood drives.

• Finally, only eligible and healthy people are allowed to give blood.

These mitigation measures will help ensure blood recipient safety, as well as staff and donor safety in reducing contact with those who may potentially have this respiratory infection. The Red Cross appreciates the generosity of the public to keep hospital shelves stocked during this uncertain time. Give the gift of life.
