PASTOR’S CORNER Jesus was filled with the power of the Holy Spirit to fulfill God's plan for the building of God's Kingdom. We have all been anointed too and are sent forth to continue the mission of Christ the Servant. We are to rejoice in the Lord for He is our strength. May we rely on the strengths and gifts that God gives us each day to continue the work of Christ in our own unique, wonderful and important ways. God's people need to receive our particular gifts and presence that will give glad tidings to those who are struggling. We also need the compassion and support of each other as we fulfill the calling that God has given each of us. Our faith community is such a great source of strength and guidance. Our children who made their first experience of the Sacrament of Reconciliation this past week remind us of the importance of God's mercy and help in an imperfect world where we turn to our loving God and Father to forgive and guide us. Through the gifts we receive and the presence of Christ, the anointed one, His Word and the Sacraments will strengthen and sustain us as we share in the mission as disciples of Christ.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Roman Catholics, our marriage practices have their pedigree in ancient Rome. One of the major players in shaping our practices was the warfare involved in building an empire. Soldiers vanished and sometimes never returned. Women began to manage their lives and to make decisions. The old family values were replaced by patriotic ones, and religion was more attuned to the gore and glory of battle, a religion of the state, not of the family. Weddings were still family celebrations, but had a public face. The bride wore a white toga and a red veil and walked to her new home. There, she and her husband joined their right hands and gave consent to each other, not relying on her father to give consent for her. Religion was optional: a pagan priest might be invited or not, and even without the ceremony, society agreed by common law that a year of living together equaled marriage consent. By the same token, marriage by consent also meant divorce was on the same legal footing, and did not require the courts or civil declarations. This is the world-view the first Christians inherited, and it was up to them to determine what was good and to hold marriage up to the light of the gospel.

CHURCH OVERSEAS COMBINED COLLECTION This weekend the Diocese of Youngstown is holding the Church Overseas Combined Collection for ministries of the Church around the globe. These ministries of the Catholic Relief Services (CRS), Holy Father/Peter’s Pence, the Church in Central and Eastern Europe and the Church in Latin America assist the Church in serving people who are hungry, refugees, victims of natural disasters, and development projects. Please give generously to this collection which combines four collections in one.

WOMEN'S AUXILIARY OFFERING SCHOLARSHIP The Mantua K of C Women's Auxiliary #3766 is sponsoring a $500.00 scholarship for a Catholic female that is graduating in 2016 and planning on attending either a 2 or 4 year college. Please encourage anyone you know in the area to apply. You can obtain the application on the K of C page of our website or from Annette Carlisle at [email protected]. Deadline date is January 30, 2016.

BISHOP MURRY TO SPEAK Bishop George Murry will be speaking about his experiences at the Synod on the Family and on his service as a Synod Father. The talk will be on Thursday, February 11, 7:00 p.m., at the Fr. Stenson Center, St. Joan of Arc Parish, 8894 St. Rt. 14 in Streetsboro.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS Does a typical date night in your marriage start with, "What do you want to do tonight?" "I don't know. What do you want to do?" "I don't know..." Repeat. Try something besides a dinner and a movie. Google “Making Love On A Budget” for ideas.

MERCY CORNER Whenever a hand reaches out to do good, to show the love of Christ, to dry a tear, to comfort the lonely, to show the way to one who is lost, to console the broken heart, to help the fallen, to teach those thirsting for truth, to forgive or to offer a new start…know that the Pope is at your side and supports you. —Pope Francis My mother, a Catholic school teacher, asked me to be Confirmation sponsor for one of her students. “Aw, Ma, I don’t want to…,” I replied. I didn’t need to do that. I was a high school senior. What I needed was a job. But I gave in to my mother, and come Confirmation, I was there, seated with the sponsors. Next to me was another parishioner, a local businessman. We got to talking before the Mass. He told me to come down to his shoe store and he would have a job for me.

Do you have an account of God’s mercy in your life? Look for the Mercy Corner Box soon to appear in the Narthex. In our Word Among Us monthly magazine, the January issue explained that the true witness stories they print are chosen to fit that month’s magazine theme. In a similar, very local way, we invite you to write (in brief) a personal encounter of God’s mercy and place it in our box. We may be able to include it in our Mercy Corner weekly bulletin feature.

CHAIRPEOPLE NEEDED TRADEBOOTHS—Lining up outside vendors in late winter/early spring & then making sure they are happy during the Fair.

DISTRIBUTION—Organizing food stuff & supplies before the Fair & keeping our booths well stocked throughout the Fair.

WALKING TACOS—One of our newer food booths that needs someone to take over (Vince & Donna are moving to Soft Serve).

Of course, you’ll receive info. from previous chairs, names of volunteers to lend a hand, and lots of support from the Core Group. If you’d like to volunteer for one of these areas or need more information, please contact the Parish Office ASAP.
