Spiritual Notes:We close our liturgical year with the Solemnity of Christ the King, established in 1925 by Pope Pius XI. It serves as a reminder that we as Christians are called to acknowledge Christ as king of our hearts, pledging our lives to Him who gave His life for us. After the death of Soul, Israel’s first king, the southern tribes accepted David as king while the northern tribes, known as Israel, refused to accept him for more than seven years. Today’s first reading narrates their ultimate acceptance of David when the elders of Israel and David made an arrangement. David’s reign is the beginning of the dynasty that will rule in Jerusalem for more than four centuries. After the monarchy ceased, biblical Israel looked to the future with the expectation that God would reestablish his rule with a descendant of David. For us as Christians this hope is fulfilled in Jesus. The letter to the Colossians, thought to have been written by Paul while he was in prison, presents us with an early hymn concerned with Jesus’ identity. The beloved Son is the image of the invisible God, we are told and all things were created through Him and for Him. As head of the body of the church, Christ has made peace by the blood of his cross, reconciling us to God. A king dying on the cross is not what the world would expect, but that is how our king saved us. Though the inscription announced Jesus as the King of the Jews, the witnesses to His execution mocked Him as a false king. Only one person is presented as recognizing Jesus’ true identity, the good thief, who pleads with Jesus, remember me when you come into the kingdom. And Jesus, whose death means life, promises Him a place in Paradise. For Reflection: Is Christ central to my life? Do I accept Him as king? How can I better serve my king with my life?

The Parish Office will be closed on Thursday, November 24th and Friday, November 25th in observance of Thanksgiving. If you have an emergency, please call the office and leave a message, someone will return your call.

A Special Note from Our Deacon-Intern…

I had the opportunity during this past week to reflect upon my ordination which is now only a week away. My classmates and I recently did a “run through” of the Ordination Rite at the Cathedral. It was a beautifully-odd feeling to realize almost a decade of study and formation would be coming to a close. What struck me more, however, was not that this period of preparation was ending but rather, how it began.

One’s call to a religious vocation is not his or her own. When a man or woman is called to religious life – whether through the Sacrament of Orders or Sacred Vows - it is a reflection of the faith life of the parish from which he or she has been called. Each offers him or herself as a conduit of faith extending from the local community to the People of God throughout the world. The seeds of faith are sowed in community soil but reaped world-wide to benefit His kingdom which is why it is so important to pray for religious vocations.

Those of you who have been life-long members of the parish have seen throughout the years many young men and women enter religious communities and all of us have been blessed to witness recently the call of faith in the lives of Sr. Maria Ecclesiae and Fr. Tony Davis each of whom exhibit daily the foundations of faith first formed here at St. Joseph Parish.

None of us knows precisely what God has in store for our lives nor where His love will take us when we say “yes” to His call. To this end, I have not been told to which parish I will be assigned; however, I do know this… although I attended Catholic schools, participated in parish life, and received many of the sacraments in a parish outside of the Diocese of Columbus, it is St. Joseph Parish that I call home and from which I have been called to serve. For this – and for you, my parish family - I am eternally grateful.

With the assistance of the Family Life Committee, my wife and I would like to extend our thanks to the parish by hosting a short Cookie and Punch reception next Sunday in the Parish Hall following the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Please stop by and celebrate with us the faith life of St. Joseph Parish and the Sacrament of Holy Orders.

A Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated on Thursday, November 24, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. This Mass gives each of us an opportunity to thank God for all that we have; our faith, our family and friends, our health, and all the many blessings we enjoy each day. Each year, this Mass concludes with a special blessing of the foods we will eat at our Thanksgiving Day meal. A table will be set up in front of the church for those foods. The collection at this Mass will be to support our Poor Fund.
