MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK Did you know Easter isn’t over? Easter is such a wonderful event, we can’t contain our joy in the fulfilment of God’s promise to us to send us a Savior, and so we continue to express our joy in the resurrection of our Lord for 50 days. I don’t know if you noticed or not, but as we remember God’s faithfulness to the human race, there is a change in our readings. What’s different you may ask? During the Easter Season we don’t have a reading from the Old Testament. Nope. We don’t need to be reminded of God’s promise; that was fulfilled in the Resurrection. Our first reading for the Easter Season (until Pentecost) is taken from the Acts of the Apostles, the life of the early Church. Instead of looking back to what God promised (the Old Testament readings), we now look forward to what that promise means for us, and how we are called to live. And it wasn’t always easy to live out the faith. As most of us know, change isn’t easy. Last week we heard how Thomas couldn’t believe the extraordinary news of Jesus’ resurrection, and today, we hear of Jesus appearing to the disciples who continue to find it hard to believe and think they are seeing a ghost. For some, it took some time for the reality of God’s faithfulness to sink in, but once it did their lives, and the lives of their community were changed as the Good News was spread throughout the world. In our first reading Peter addresses the Jews who came to the Temple on a regular basis, but didn’t fully live out their faith because of the situations they found themselves in. I was reading an article in Priest magazine which addressed our first reading: Peter spoke to a city that suffered under occupation by a foreign power. Civil leaders were not always the most honorable of men. Too many of them coveted and misused their authority and became petty tyrants. Taxation was close to 90%. … In his sermon, Peter touches the people’s suffering and fear, and he offers Christ as the way to find joy and hope. To repent was to make a conscious choice to live differently. … Their pain and suffering got them into the Temple, but it would be the choice to embrace what they were taught there that would create change in their lives. Week after week we gather together to hear the story of our faith. Week after week we hear of God’s faithfulness and mercy. But do we really understand what God did for us? Do we let it sink in and change our lives or do we find ourselves only coming to church to ask God for something? Do we make that conscious choice to live out what we profess? The Good News is that Christ is risen! Now, let’s make a choice to live what we say we believe.

In Baptism we are reborn as children of God, made members of His Church, and heirs to the King-dom of Heaven. With this in mind, we welcome these children of God who were baptized on April 12, 2015: Timothy Noah Alacbay Jagmis son of John & Judith; Ethan Edward O’Connor son of Daniel & Deanna

ST. JOSEPH’S CHURCH HERNDON, VIRGINIA THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER April 19, 2015

“Wake Up The World” 2015

Year of Consecrated Life

There’s a story told about a woman who prayed to the Virgin that one of her sons would become a priest. She had seven sons, but all of them married and raised families. Then she prayed that one of her grandsons would become a priest. She had many grandsons, but none chose that life. The woman continued her prayer. She was almost a 100 years old and near death when one of her grandsons, at the

age of 33, decided to become a priest. She died a happy woman knowing her lifelong prayer was finally answered. The story is true, told by the priest himself. Prayer works; you just have to keep at it. —Take Five for Faith

Catholic Home Missions The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place next week. One way that this appeal works to strengthen home mission dioceses in the United States is by funding seminarian forma on in poor dioceses. The blessing of seminarians places a financial burden on these dioceses, where educa ng each seminarian costs $35-40,000 per year. Your support is needed for these young men so that they might go back and serve their parishes. Please strengthen the Church at home by making a generous gi to next week’s appeal.

IT'S COMING NEXT WEEK!!! . . . THE BABY BOTTLE DRIVE to benefit HOPE in Northern Virginia is approaching. Your donations will help provide many of the material goods families depend on such as cribs, car seats, high chairs, clothing, diapers and formula. Take a bottle after Mass on April 25/26 – fill it with coins, bills or checks and return it to Mass on May 2/3. HOPE provides pregnancy counseling and assistance to women of all ages. For questions, please contact Peggy Bauer (703) 435-2294 of the Respect Life Ministry.
