ST. JOSEPH CHURCH NEW PALTZ, NY
Veteran’s Day 11/11/16- Remember to thank a veteran for their
service to our country.
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN- As we have reported in the past few
weeks, a capital campaign will soon begin
that will help us to address important needs
within our parish, including major
maintenance repairs and upgrades and, just as
importantly, evangelization and faith
formation initiatives.
Part of the funds generated through the capital
campaign will go toward several critical
maintenance projects for all of our buildings: the church
(including the hall), the parish center, the friary and the convent.
This will also include weatherization and necessary safety
improvements. As you well know, deferred maintenance is more
expensive in the long-term than maintenance done in a timely
manner.
We will describe the other initiatives in the weeks to come, and
please pray for the success of this campaign. As always, many
thanks for your great generosity toward this parish family.
HELPING THE HOMELESS- For the past several months, the
New Paltz Church Council (of which St. Joseph’s is a member)
has been able to provide hotel vouchers for homeless people
coming to our congregations for assistance. The funds for this
program are starting to run low, and with the cold weather
coming soon, we will soon need help in keeping this program
going. If you would like to make a donation to this ministry, it
would be much appreciated. Checks should be written out to “St.
Joseph’s Church” and can be dropped or sent in to the parish
center, or put into the collection baskets (in that case, please write
“Voucher Program” on the envelope).
BIBLE STUDY- A faith enrichment class entitled “An
Introduction to Sacred Scripture or What is the Bible Anyway?
will be offered on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 P.M. in the parish
center December 2nd. Topics will include:: How did the Bible
come to be; who wrote it; how can we have a fuller understanding
of teachings written over 2000 years ago; what are its historical
and linguistic challenges; what does the Church teach about study
and interpretation; how to pray with Scripture and more. The
Church teaches that our faith is based on Sacred Scripture and
Tradition. These classes will be an opportunity to deepen
understanding of ancient Scripture in order to enrich our faith and
practice in the 21st century. Come and make better acquaintance
with our sacred book. The presenter is Hildegard Pleva, a
graduate of the Institute for Religious Studies at St. Joseph’s
Seminary, Dunwoodie.
ONE BOOK ONE NEW PALTZ- The book $2.00 a Day:
Living on Almost Nothing in America has been chosen as the
2016 New Paltz community read. There will be
several events around the book during the week of
November 13-20. For more information, please go
to www.onebookonenewpaltz.com.

CAMPUS MINISTRY- Are you a SUNY
New Paltz student who would like to be a part
of a vibrant Catholic community on campus?
If so, Catholic Campus Ministry (CCM) may
be what you are looking for. CCM meets every Wednesday night
at 7:30 PM in the Student Union Building for fellowship, faith
sharing, and pizza. CCM sponsored events include: community
and parish service, retreats, monthly student masses, fun events,
and an annual mission trip to the Dominican Republic. For more
information contact Hank Grimsland, Catholic Campus Minister
at: [email protected] or by phone at: 845-255-8536.
CRYING ROOM- Just a gentle reminder that we have a crying
room in our church (also known as “The Mother’s Chapel”) and
that if your child is getting restless or just needs to have some
more space while the Mass is going on, you can bring them there
for as long as you need to. You are of course still very much part
of the congregation while you’re in this room and you are able to
hear all that is going on within the main body of the church. We
appreciate very much the efforts of parents to bring their children
to church and we want to make that experience of being at Mass a
better one for the parents and their children.
CATHOLIC APPROACH TO VOTING-
An important part of our life as Catholics is our par-
ticipation in civic life. Catholics, as people of faith
are called to bring the values of the Gospel to the worlds we are a
part of, including the political world. Therefore, we all have a
responsibility to vote with an informed conscience so that our
communities will reflect a spirit of justice for all people. To read
the document from the US Conference of Bishops on voting enti-
tled Faithful Citizenship, please go to www.usccb.org/issues-and-
action/faithful-citizenship
