The Fifth Sunday of Easter

April 29, 2018

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

Remain in me as I remain in you, says the Lord. Whoever

remains in me will bear much fruit. [John 15:4a, 5b]

In the image of the vine and the branches, Jesus is say-

ing that we are organically joined to him. So he wants us

to make our home in him, to live in him, to abide and

make our dwelling there, sharing in his life by heeding his

Word and obeying his commandments, taking time to

pray, allow ourselves to be stretched by the Gospel and be

held accountable for the things we said we were commit-

ted to. Spiritual formation happens in the midst of all this

dialogue as we discover that we need “pruning,” we em-

brace change as essential for growth. When we see how far

we have pulled back from our original commitments, we

can find freedom in confessing our shortcomings, then we

can move ahead to overcome what is in the way of com-

munion with Christ.

Remaining in communion with the Risen Christ is

both the “means to” and the “ends of” heaven. When we

get separated from Christ and don’t enjoy his company and

daily encounters through engagement with his Word, we

wither spiritually. We lose our way and our souls. How are

you serving Christ? How are you stewarding your gifts in

his company? Easter is the season of mystagogy, when we

explore the fruits and gifts of the Holy Spirit, and al-

low the mysteries of faith to unfold before our won-

dering eyes.

Question of the week: What does it mean to “bear

much fruit”? How have I borne fruit in my spiritual

life? What are the fruits of the Spirit? (Galatians 5: 22

-23)

Happy Easter! (Still!)

Fr. Bob Cushing

El Quinto Domingo de Pascua de Resurrección

29 de Abril, 2018

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos:

¿He da-

do fruto en mi vida spiritual? ¿Cuáles son los frutos del Espíri-

tu?: (Gálatas 5: 22-23)

¡Feliz Pascua de Resurrección! (¡Todavía!)

Word from Pope Francis:

Support the Catholic Home Missions Appeal today! Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the United States are considered a home mission territory because they are unable to fund the essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support funds programs, such as reli-gious education, seminary formation, and lay ministry train-ing, to build vibrant faith communities right here in the United States. Please be generous. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions.

Last Special Fundraiser for Youth Ministry this year: “Pre-Mother’s Day Dinner!” at 7:15 PM on Saturday May 5. Get Dad & Mom to dinner BEFORE Mother’s Day! See Loretta for tickets after all masses this weekend. Tickets are $20 per couple or $10 for individual. For an additional $5 per person, enjoy some wine with your spaghetti dinner prepared by the Knights of Columbus.

“Like a branch is part of a vine, Christians cannot distance themselves from communion with the Risen Christ. If, on the contrary, one should lose com-munion with Him, he would be-come sterile, or rather, harmful to the community.”

Next Sunday is Loaves and Fishes Sunday: Please br ing non

Tax-Free IRA Charitable Gifting

Did you know that federal law allows tax-free charita-

ble contributions of up to $100,000 directly from your

IRA?

To make a tax-free charitable contribution the follow-

ing requirements must be met:

The IRA owner must be 70 ½ or older.

Qualified charitable contributions must be made

by DECEMBER 31st

each year.

The charitable contribution must be transferred

directly from the IRA to the eligible charity.

A charity must be a 501 C (3) organization.

Distribution can be made to multiple charities in

the same year following the requirements.

Making a qualified charitable contribution as opposed

to a normal charitable gift has two main advantages:

A qualified charitable contribution counts toward

satisfying the donor’s required minimum distri-

bution for the tax year.

The distribution is excluded from the taxpayer’s

income; you do not need to itemize your taxes

in order to make an IRA charitable distribution.

Contact your financial or tax advisor for further infor-

mation.“

We thank the couple that has already done this

for the Parish!
