In our Catholic Tradition there is no shortage of ideas to become holy every day, especially during the Lent. Instead of the many acts of omission (sacrifices), many are focusing on acts of commission (undertakings). It is easy to say I sacrifice something for a while and then start it all over again, whereas, if we embark on new undertakings that will really make a difference in ours or anyone else’s lives, it is a highly rewarding accomplishment. In this regard some of our youth members have very encouraging messages for us.

“Josh” was a confirmation student in another parish in the Triad. Teachers were complaining about his lack of interest, indifferent attitude, and disruptive behavior in the class. One day during the meditation time after the Holy Communion Josh saw his Mom sobbing and praying with her face in her palms and her husband comforting her. He heard her praying, “Jesus please help my son have a positive attitude to faith and an interest to love You Lord”. This really shook him up. That day’s sermon kept coming back to him throughout the day. This is the time of fulfillment. Reform your lives and believe in the Good News ..” Josh felt crying and started praying in his heart. He volunteered to be a Lector and an Usher next Sunday. He began to sing and pray loudly at the Masses and never gave a hard tome to the teachers, either in the school or in the confirmation class. He helped several other kids to turn around and be active in the church.

If Josh can change and help others to we also can. It all started with a loving Mother’s caring and trusting prayer.

“Ashley” was the leader of notorious social media group in the High School, frequently floating crude pictures and low rate jokes in substandard language. One day her Dad asked her if she could love Jesus more personally and use her talents for Him. On that Sunday the priest challenged the youth on how they were celebrating Lent showing their love for Jesus. Ashley felt touched by Jesus. She began to publish daily Word of God through her social media group and worked hard to get all her friends turn around for Jesus.

Like Ashley’s Dad, all parents can invite their children to use their talents and social influence to do something for Jesus during this Lent. Making sacrifices during Lent is a good practice but it should motivate us to do something more for Jesus every day.

We all have to reflect during this Lent on what can we do more to show our love for Jesus, that will involve our attitudes and behaviors, and will have an impact on others also to love Him more.

En nuestra Tradición católica no faltan ideas para llegar a ser santos todos los días, especialmente durante la Cuaresma. En lugar de los muchos actos de omisión (sacrificios), muchos se están centrando en actos de comisión (compromisos). Es fácil decir que sacrifico algo por un tiempo y luego lo vuelvo a empezar, mientras que, si nos embarcamos en nuevos emprendimientos que realmente marcarán una diferencia en la vida de todos o de los demás, es un logro sumamente gratificante. En este sentido, algunos de nuestros jóvenes miembros tienen mensajes muy alentadores para nosotros.

"Josh" fue un estudiante de confirmación en otra parroquia de la Tríada. Los maestros se quejaban de su falta de interés, actitud indiferente y comportamiento perturbador en la clase. Un día, durante el tiempo de meditación después de la Sagrada Comunión, Josh vio a su madre sollozando y orando con la cara en las palmas y su esposo consolándola. La escuchó orar: "Jesús, por favor, ayuda a mi hijo a tener una actitud positiva hacia la fe y un interés en amarte Señor". Esto realmente lo sacudió. El sermón de ese día siguió volviendo a él durante todo el día. Este es el momento de la realización. Reforme sus vidas y crea en las Buenas Nuevas ... "Josh sintió un llanto y comenzó a orar en su corazón. Se ofreció como voluntario para ser Lector y Usher el próximo domingo. Comenzó a cantar y rezar en voz alta en las Misas y nunca les dio un tomo duro a los maestros, ni en la escuela ni en la clase de confirmación. Ayudó a otros niños a cambiar y ser activos en la iglesia.

Si Josh puede cambiar y ayudar a otros también Podemos hacerlo. Todo comenzó con la oración de amor y confianza de una Madre amorosa.

"Ashley" era la líder del notorio grupo de medios sociales en la escuela secundaria, con frecuencia fotos crudas y bromas de baja calidad en un lenguaje deficiente. Un día su papá le preguntó si podía amar a Jesús más personalmente y usar sus talentos para él. Ese domingo, el sacerdote desafió a los jóvenes sobre cómo estaban celebrando la Cuaresma mostrando su amor por Jesús. Ashley se sintió tocada por Jesús. Comenzó a publicar diariamente la Palabra de Dios a través de su grupo de redes sociales y trabajó duro para lograr que todos sus amigos voltearan por Jesús. Al igual que el papá de Ashley, todos los padres pueden invitar a sus hijos a usar sus talentos e influencia social para hacer algo por Jesús durante esta Cuaresma. Hacer sacrificios durante la Cuaresma es una buena práctica, pero debería motivarnos a hacer algo más por Jesús todos los días.

Todos tenemos que reflexionar durante esta Cuaresma sobre qué podemos hacer más para mostrar nuestro amor por Jesús, que involucrará nuestras actitudes y comportamientos, y tendrá un impacto en los demás también para amarlo más.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Regresando a los tres pilares de la conversión, el ayuno es mucho más que el simple hecho de no comer, es aprender a negarme a mí mismo para que ya no sea yo quien vivo, sino Cristo que vive en mí. Es el negarme de ciertas cosas para dar vida a los demás.

El ayudar es poner en práctica la caridad y la justicia social. Es buscar el cargar con nuestra propia cruz y ayudar a los demás con la de ellos. En otras palabras, es practicar la misma generosidad de Dios quien hace caer la lluvia sobre los buenos y los malos, es amar sin distinción de personas.

Contemporáneamente, el orar es entrar en conversación con Dios, es recogerse para entrar en la presencia de Dios, con todo lo que uno es y todo lo que uno tiene, poniendo todo en las manos misericordiosas del Padre que nos ama.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The second Sunday of Lent every year recalls the Transfiguration of the Lord. Since the fourth century, Mount Tabor has been the focus of devotion to this event. As mountains go, it is not particularly lofty, rising about fifteen hundred feet, within view of the Sea of Galilee and very close to Nazareth. Scripture doesn’t identify the mountain, but in the year 348 Saint Cyril of Jerusalem said he preferred Mount Tabor to Mount Hermon as the site of the Transfiguration, and his opinion won. It has long been a strategic military site, and ancient fortresses are visible on the heights. Over the centuries, churches and fortified monasteries rose on the mountaintop, only to be destroyed by various invaders. Six hundred years ago, local Christians started to decorate the ruins with flags and banners on the Feast of the Transfiguration. In 1631, the Sultan granted permission to the Franciscans to live on Mount Tabor, and they have been there ever since, discovering the ruins of an old Crusader church and constructing the present church on the site in 1924. The top of the mountain is divided into Greek Orthodox and Latin (that’s us) zones. At one time, tourists arrived on the summit by bus, but this is no longer permitted. Some ride bicycles up a challenging and winding path, while others take the four thousand three hundred steps constructed for Christian pilgrims in the fourth century. It’s hard to imagine the fishermen following Jesus up this craggy mountain without complaint. Visitors will sympathize with Peter’s plan to construct booths and stay put with Jesus, Moses, and Elijah for a while, enjoying the view, and planning the trip back down —Rev. THE OBEDIENCE OF ABRAHAM AND JESUS

  God tested Abraham by asking not for an ordinary sacrifice, which would have been a partial burning with the meat divided between God and the people and eaten by those who sacrificed, but for a holocaust, a total burning of the sacrificial animal. This type of sacrifice consecrated the entire offering to God alone. This is what God was asking of Abraham in offering his only son, Isaac. When Abraham demonstrated his obedience, that was enough. This story from today’s scriptures foretells the completion of the blood sacrifices of the old covenant in the new covenant: the blood of God’s own Son, offered to us on the cross and in the Eucharist. Abraham’s obedience foreshadows the obedience of Jesus to God’s promise of salvation. The obedience of Abraham is rewarded in the birth to him, through Isaac, of many nations. Dios puso a prueba a Abraham pidiéndole no un sacrificio ordinario, el cual requería que se quemara parcialmente la carne y se dividiera entre Dios y el pueblo y fuera consumido por los que hacían el sacrificio, sino que le pidió un holocausto, la quema completa del animal expiatorio. Este tipo de sacrificio consagraba la ofrenda solo a Dios. Esto es lo que Dios le pedía a Abraham en su ofrenda de su único hijo, Isaac. Cuando Abraham demostró su obediencia, fue suficiente.
