And that is why I succeed.” - Michael Jordan It is that time of the year when we celebrate the success of many of our boys who have achieved so much in the academic, cultural and sporting areas of school life. These achievements will be recognised at the Prep Speech Night on Wednesday night. Inevitably with success also comes disappointment for those boys who are not acknowledged and rewarded. It is very important that we teach our boys that this is all part of our journey and the fact is that we will all face disappointments throughout our lives. When facing disappointment we tend to react in two ways: . We are angry: at our friends, the school, and the process. We often play the blame game in this situation; We blame others for our lack of success or acknowledgement. . We become discouraged and we begin to doubt ourselves and our abilities. This may lead to negativity and a ‘don’t care’ attitude. We need to teach our boys that feeling and showing disappointment is natural. In many ways it is a good thing, because it shows that they are passionate and care about the situation, but they need to get over it and move on. Four possible ways to help your son deal with disappointment could include: Allow him to express his frustration to his friends or to you as his parents. Teach him to celebrate the achievements of others, to be happy for those who have been successful, to congratulate them and be gracious about it. Look at the big picture with him: the reality is that not everyone can receive a prize, be awarded colours, etc. At the same time, encourage him to be honest about his potential and his ability. Help him to be patient and to learn from the experience. Bitterness and resentment are counter-productive. Receiving a prize or being awarded colours is no guarantee for success later in life. We all grow and develop at different rates and this is merely one stage of his development.

Staff We are very sad to say farewell to three of our teachers who are retiring at the end of this term. Formal farewells will be made at several functions over the next two weeks, but I would just like to thank them for their total commitment, passion and love of St John’s Prep. All three of them have left a significant and lasting mark in boys’ lives at St John’s. To Monique Hauptfleisch, Jill Arnold and Gill McCabe, I salute you and wish you all the very best in this new chapter in your lives. Thanks to your influence, our staff are wiser, the boys are richer and the school is a much better place. Thank you! Survey The focus groups for the, ‘How Good is St John’s Prep?’ survey are well underway and the action plans culminating from these will be published in the new year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved in the process; I feel that it has been an extremely valuable exercise. Conclusion To conclude, I would like to wish you all a wonderful holiday and blessed Christmas. Enjoy the time with you family and I look forward to seeing you all refreshed and ready to tackle whatever 2011 has in store for us. Patrick Lees Headmaster

As the year now rushes headlong to its end – we have had a number of special services, which will not be repeated in a hurry. First we had the tragedy of William Morcombe’s accident; the prayer and practical support offered by the St John’s Community, which was amazing; and finally his Funeral Service in the chapel. Then, and much more happily, we had a service where the Bishop of Johannesburg, Brian Germond, came and inducted Patrick Lees as Headmaster of the Prep. Now, as the year draws to a close, we begin to think about the great story of Christmas. The story of a God who loved us so much that He gave up all the joys and glory of heaven and humbled himself as a baby – tiny, dependent, and fragile – so that our fallenness could be overcome and our world could be given new hope. One of the tragedies of the school is that we close down at the beginning of December, and so the full wonder of this story is only briefly touched on; and the joyous family celebrations of Christmas are often detached from their foundation. Rather than try and extend the school year by three weeks, I would like to encourage you all to try and find a church where you are over Christmas and join in their celebrations as part of the great family of Christ. For those who are not going away, you are invited to join any of the churches nearby. To help you, I include a number of the churches and the details of the services they will be holding over this period: St John’s Parish, Houghton; (meeting in the school’s Crypt chapel) Sunday 5th 18h30 Carol Service Christmas 09h00 Christmas Eucharist St Michael’s, Bryanston; (Cnr Bryanston Drive & Mount Street) Sunday 19th 18h30 Nine Lessons & Carols Friday 24th 17h00 Crib Service 22h30 Midnight Eucharist Christmas 06h30 Said Eucharist 08h30 Sung Eucharist - Church Family Eucharist - Hall 10h30 Sung Eucharist - Church Family Eucharist - Hall

Basketball

For the first time in the history of the Prep, the 1st Team Basketball Squad went on a sports tour. The squad went on four day tour of Pietermaritizburg and Durban, over half term. A big thank you to the parents who made this possible. Basketball is very popular and well-resourced in KZN and so we came up against some very tough opposition. We played seven games in total and won two (losing two of the matches by two baskets). The boys gave a very good account of themselves and were wonderful ambassadors for St. John’s. They were all well behaved and showed great sportsmanship on the court. I would also like to use this opportunity to thank the following parents of their support of the tour and basketball in general at St. John’s:

• Mr and Mrs. Pan for the Vodacom shirts and water bottles • Mr and Mrs. De Oliveira for the stunning St. John’s branded tour shirts • Mrs Chamberlin for arranging the bags and tour shirts • Mr and Mrs Masianoga for the cash contribution towards the tour and new hoops

which we hope to put up on one of the courts • Mr and Mrs. Shaefer for carrying the costs of refurbishing the school’s main

Basketball court

If any parents would like to be part of a fundraising committee for basketball facilities in the school or make any contribution to the sport, please kindly contact Mrs.Glynnis Chew from the school tuckshop. ([email protected] , work 011 645 3188, cell 082 376 7576)

SECOND HAND TACKIES and SCHOOL SHOES

We’re collecting second hand shoes for Isaac Moore Primary School in Atteridgeville. Our aim is to collect a pair of shoes for each child in the school during the year. There are about 376 pupils.

Where: Please put shoes in the bin outside Brigitte's office.

How: Please wash the shoes and put them in a plastic packet tied with a knot so that we can keep the pairs together.

When: We will be collecting for the remainder of the year

About the school: Isaac Moore Primary School is in a poor community in Atteridgeville, Pretoria. The school is led by an amazingly motivated headmistress who encourages an all-round approach to education including sport, culture and education, despite having minimal funding and relying mainly on charity.

Art club and extra classes From the beginning of next term, Mr Poco is starting an Art Club (for LIII and UIII boys) and extra art classes for junior boys. Senior boys are encouraged to join the Art Club on Tuesdays from 14h00 -15h00 or Thursdays from 15h00-16h00. Juniors may arrange extra art lessons with Mr Poco at alternative times and on alternative days.

We hope to see the senior boys joining the Art Club to create various exciting art works with mediums they do not normally use in class, such as print making, photography, oil painting and many more. This will be a fantastic opportunity for any boy who wishes to develop his art skills.
