ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH MAY 2014 ISSUE OF THE CHIMES From Pastor Mark's Desk: Alleluia! Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! Alleluia! You can always tell that Easter has arrived when you hear these words. I am writing this with the memory of the celebration of this past Easter Sunday fresh in my mind. I always feel an electric thrill run through me on hearing these words, and what a grand and glorious celebration we shared! For me, the miracle of the resurrection has always been an amazing display of how much God loves us . I hope that this particular Easter is giving us all a renewed sense of the wonder that is found in the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Now, I say all that as I begin to think ahead to what will be happening in congregations all over the world this coming Sunday. We pastors all know the truth that this coming Sunday is one of notoriously low attendance. So many of us will lament the reality of seemingly fair weather Christians. (I often call them Chreasters - for Christmas and Easter attenders.) The problem with this reality is that so many people who profess to be Christian are not really on fire for what God calls us to be and do. It really is a question of spirituality. One of the things that our council has undertaken in the past is to examine our congregation and look at what we do and how we do it. We did a survey and found that one of our weakest factors is passionate spirituality. Christian Schwarz, in his book, Natural Church Development, defines passionate spirituality this way: "Are the Christians in this church 'on fire ?' Do they live committed lives and practice their faith with joy and enthusiasm?" I really believe that when the answer is no, then that is how we get Chreasters! We are constantly challenged by the world around us, and it is just not chic to be all Christian. I also know that we Lutherans have a great deal of trouble with this kind of talk. After all, with our German and Scandinavian roots, we know that you are not ever really supposed to be excited. We have been trained that we are not supposed to show our emotions, no matter what. But the Bible calls us to something completely different. St. Paul, in his letter to the church in Rome, says this about the marks of Christians: .. . love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. (Romans 12:10-12, NRSV) It is true that we do very well with parts of this passage. I am always amazed at how this congregation responds when someone is in need. I am thrilled to see how much care you hold for each other - providing meals and assistance in times of life crises. However, I am forced to ask some questions. How do we do in terms of zeal? Are we ardent in spirit? Are we rejoicing in hope? I know that these questions are not easy to answer. So let me see if I can ask it another way. Are we excited about the things that happen within and through our congregation? I know this is not true, but there are times when it seems that hardly any of us are excited about our church. Which leads to the question of what are we going to do about it? The answer to that question is really pretty straightforward. It is the challenge ofliving out what St. Paul says in the quote from Romans. Don't be afraid to let the light of Christ show through you to the world. You never know, but I am fairly certain that many of us will be surprised by how some things happen to bring glory to God. We may even find ourselves proclaiming with joy that Christ is Risen Indeed! Alleluia! And what is really amazing is when we get to experience hos that kind of zeal is contagious! Until next time. See you in church, '-'1 J

From Pastor Mark's Desk:

Alleluia! Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! Alleluia! You can always tell that Easter has arrived when you hear these words. I am writing this with the

memory of the celebration of this past Easter Sunday fresh in my mind. I always feel an electric thrill run through me on hearing these words, and what a grand and glorious celebration we shared! For me, the miracle of the resurrection has always been an amazing display of how much God loves us.

Christian Schwarz, in his book, Natural Church Development, defines passionate spirituality this way: "Are the Christians in this church ' on fire?' Do they live committed lives and practice their faith with joy and enthusiasm?"

I really believe that when the answer is no, then that is how we get Chreasters!

St. Paul, in his letter to the church in Rome, says this about the marks of Christians:

.. . love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. (Romans 12:10-12, NRSV)

It is true that we do very well with parts of this passage.

See you in church, '-'1 ~ J /~~

Missionary, The Rev. John S. Lunn He will be visiting July 6

Greetings to my sponsoring churches! Thank you for your response to my home assignment visits! The schedule is taking shape and I am looking forward to seeing some of you this summer. I still have some openings in July and August - especially if I can visit you midweek.

When I wrote last month, I was in Vellore, India, and still leading a restricted life after surgery to straighten two toes. Toes seem pretty small in the grand scheme of things, but they have surely been dictating my life lately! I was released from house arrest and was able to run errands and visit with the Palliative Care Team and other people that I felt might be willing to do some volunteering in the future. Thank God for computers, email and cell phones! A.k.a - Office!

I got to preach in the hospital chapel on the second Sunday of Lent after what seemed to me to be a very long absence from the pulpit. The Gospel that week was John 3: 1-17 and I focused on verses 16 and 17: 'For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. ' The department being remembered in prayer that week were the various pediatric units. I talked about how an American toddler hears the word "No!" 400 times a day. Imagine that! I couldn't find out how many times they hear "Yes" but you can imagine it would be far less. I said that based on John 3:16-17, we can be assured that God is continually saying "Yes!" to us all. When all you hear is "no," that is the one you learn, but if you hear "yes" that will affect the way we treat each other.

It was hot in Vellore and getting hotter. It was over I 00 degrees most days and didn't cool off much at night. Combine that with power cuts and it makes for some uncomfortable hours. And it wasn't even summer yet!

The hottest weather isn't until May. I wanted to get a thank-you gift for the Sisters who work in the hospice unit at Sneha Deepam. They gave me breakfast every morning during my stay there. A friend found a used laptop - bright red - that I could afford and I'm sure they will find it useful.

I learned that the Northeast Minnesota Synod ofWELCA has a project involving Phebe Hospital in Liberia where I spend time each year. They are raising funds to provide the hospital with solar panels so that there will be an alternate daytime source of power for the hospital. I am happy to hear this and will pray for their success. My plan is to be in Liberia in May, but there have been some cases of Ebola in Lofa County where Curran Hospital is located and my travel plans may have to be adjusted. Already, the May ELNEC workshops in Liberia have been postponed until November.

Mango season began in Vellore, but just a few days before I left for Tanzania a week ago. It's fall, going into winter in Tanzania, so no mangoes here. I am going to have to start planning my travel so that I am around for mango season wherever I go! My trip was uneventful except for when I got busted for an overweight carry-on bag. I tried a song and dance that has worked before, but this guy wouldn't budge so I had to put 7 kg of my stuff in a box to be checked. Guess I'll have to do some different planning - like not carrying two laptop computers! I flew from Chennai to Doha, Qatar, to Kilimanjaro and was met by a taxi there and driven to Arusha and my apartment.

My toes are acting up a bit and have to limit my activity, but I will be preaching on Easter and the Sunday after, and I will be ready for my home assignment which begins in June. Please continue to keep me in your prayers as I keep you in mine. Please pray for the people of Liberia and the medical community that cares for them as they face Ebola and the fear that it brings with it. Peace, John

Our Congregation has had the opportunity to participate in directing Choice Dollars since June 2012. If you are a Thrivent member you should occasionally receive Choice Dollars. Thrivent should notify you by a post to their web site. You have a choice in where those dollars go, including to St. John's.

Since June 2012, a committee has met periodically to decide how to use money that has been directed to St. John's. Your Choice Dollars have helped support: Klothes for Kids, Hospitality Ministry, purchase of couches for Vicar's office, Amazing Grace Day Camp and the parlor fund. If you wish to designate how your dollars are directed for St. John's you should contact Barb Stoneburner. If you would rather the committee choose how the dollars are directed, you need to do nothing more than contact Thrivent and direct your Choice Dollars to St. John's.

*** Currently Thrivent is offering additional support to congregations. During their "Direct Now . .. and add $20!" campaign from April 1 to May 31, 2014, Thrivent will give an extra $20 for each member who chooses to direct Choice Dollars to our congregation first.

Thank you to everyone who helped with the Lenten dinners on Wednesday evening at St. John' s. Your help in providing food, serving and cleaning up after the meals was greatly appreciated!

To the Members of St. John's: Thank you for the beautiful hyacinth plant I received. Purple is my favorite color. I also appreciated the card and the special card made by Alexander Combs. What a pleasant visit I had with the person who brought them-Doris Hina. God be kind to all. Doris E. Baker.

Thank You so much for the carnations for St. Patrick's Day that Mrs. Bridwell brought. It put a bright spot in a dark and gloomy day. We appreciate your kindness. Donna Miller and Carol Mix.

Dear Friends at St. John's, I want to thank you for the beautiful pink plant you brought me. It is very pretty and I want to try to keep it alive for awhile. I really want to thank you so much for thinking of me. Your thoughtfulness is very nice. Thanks again, Winnie Stiers

Endowment Fund Outreach Ministry Nominees

Amazing Grace Task Force: The Southern Ohio Synod funds the Amazing Grace Day Camps all over the synod area. They need our help to pay for the training, supplies and the counselors for the camps.

The Restoration: Is a local evangelism event that is hosted by New Hope Full Gospel Church. They reach over 1000 area youth including our own with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is held at Secrest Auditorium and done very professionally with Adam King as the main speaker and nationally known speakers and Christian musical artists.

Military Families Group: They send care packages to our troops, have assisted in fundraisers for injured troops, backed Eagle Scout improvements to Veteran's Memorial Garden in Woodlawn Cemetery, and in anyway honor those who have served and are still serving.

Lomo Camperships: Providing children who may not be able to afford camp some financial help so they too can be inspired from the camp's rich spiritual life.

Christ Table Kitchen Project: Christ's Table began right here in St. John's many years ago. They have received some much needed equipment for their kitchen. This equipment will save them some money as they go to a gas stove and update their facility. $5,000.00 will take care of the updates necessary.

First Church of the Nazarene Roof Project: The church has a leaking roof. Much of their money is tied up in litigation over the shingles a contractor used on the roof. Meanwhile, they try to raise the money to fix the roof properly.

Eastside Community Center: No Specific Project

Regarding my faith journey, I had a history of seeing my grandfather in Germany hiding Jews in his barn during the war. It was similar to America's Underground Railroad, and carried the risk of death if he had been caught doing this!

Also, for me when I first started coming to St. John's, the pastor at that time, Pastor Haner, would come to my home and talk with me to help me through my transition to America from Germany. This was a big memory of faith for me at that time.

Registration forms are available at the church office June 1.

Amazing Grace is just around the corner and, as always, we cannot participate in this grace-filled ministry without your help! For those who might be new to AG, this is a wonderful opportunity for children to experience Jesus' Gospel oflove, hope and new life. It likewise provides a camping experience for children who may not be able to attend a resident camp.

Amazing Grace is truly a team effort; many hands are needed so that it might flourish. Please prayerfully consider volunteering whether you're available the entire week, a few days, or just a few hours. Volunteer roles and tasks are listed below.

Please also note that, for the safety of our campers, all volunteers will be asked to sign a Voluntary Disclosure Statement, which will then be cross-referenced with the National Sex Offender Public Registry. A member of St. John's professional staff will review the information and your confidentiality will be protected.

All volunteers are also required this year to attend a volunteer training session led by Vicar Amanda Highben. Several dates and times will be available to accommodate personal schedules. Please stay posted for more information.

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Council Vice President Doug Smith ([email protected]), Vicar Amanda Highben ([email protected]) or Parish Administrator Renee Thorn ([email protected]). We may also be reached by calling the church office: 740.452.7569.

Thank you in advance for your support and help. May God bless us with another transformative week of Amazing Grace! Your AG Co-Coordinators: Doug, Renee and Amanda

St. John's Lutheran Church Financial Report- January thru March 2014

Thanks be to God for our wonderful Easter celebration and, especially, the reason that we celebrate!

For the first quarter of 2014 (months of January through March), our total YTD (year-to-date) General Fund income from all sources was $48,115.72 (compared with $50,881 .17 for the same period in 2013). This included General Fund giving from members totaling $48,102.14 (v. $45,588.62 in 2013), which is a 5.55% increase over last year! Unfortunately, income from charitable trusts and investments totaled only $13.58 (v. $5,292.55 in 2013). The first quarter charitable trust and investment income was much less than last year because of an unusually large distribution from the Ruth Young Trust right at the end of 2013.

Operating expenses totaled $67, 129.82, which were $846.24 less than the YTD budget of $67,976.06. Approved expenditures from other funds offset $14,918.33 of our YTD expenses, leaving a deficit of $4,942.00. So, although we are spending at a rate slightly less than budgeted expenses, there are two factors of concern that merit our prayerful consideration and response:

• Spending for the rest of the year will be at a higher rate as we pay for annual support of local social ministries and fund important youth programs including Amazing Grace Day Camp.

• General Fund income must increase in order to fund our budget for 2014.

Our ministries are active and need our ongoing involvement and support. Programs and ministries for all ages are active. If you haven't visited our website www.stjohnszanesville.org or our Facebook page lately, you are missing a lot of good information. You can see all the events and ministries that are happening, check out the calendar, and much more. Our website is first class and it provides a great "window" for visitors and prospective members to see what is going on at St. Johns and to get to know us better. The same holds true for current members, I might add.

We are blessed with the musical gifts of Mark Pinnick, who joined us as organist and choir director at the beginning of January. Our choirs and instrumentalists have provided beautiful music as they lead us in worship each Sunday.

We welcomed a number of new members earlier this year and we are excited about what we can accomplish at St. John's. Our 1751

h anniversary approaches on May 4. We will celebrate with a special service, luncheon, a talent show, a concert by the Waldorf College choir and other special events. A new church history has been written, documenting the rich heritage of St. John's Lutheran Church and providing a virtual tour of our magnificent building. The title is a statement of St. John's vision: Learning, Living, Growing; With Christ As Our Leader/

It takes all our help, all our involvement, all of our prayers, and all of our stewardship of time, talent and treasure to carry out the mission that God has given us. Together, we can accomplish what God exhorts us to do in this place, just as our predecessors did for nearly two centuries before us!

Let us move forward with joy, excitement and thanksgiving for God's grace! I encourage each member to take that joy and enthusiasm into your regular stewardship as we answer God's call to return a proportionate share of what He has first given us!

To the glory of God in Christ,

W. Norman Shade

THIEL C 0 L L E G E

April 7, 2014

Dear Pastor Mark, Renee Thom and the St. John' s Lutheran Church congregation of Zanesville,

I want to extend our heartfelt thanks for helping to organize our first visit to St. John's Lutheran Church in Zanesville. I appreciate the hard work that goes into publicity and all the details surrounding our visit. The setting in your sanctuary for our concert on tour was extremely rewarding. Our new connection with the St. John's Lutheran congregation, the Thiel choir alumni who came, and the church families in attendance made us feel very welcome. Please accept my personal thanks to you, to those who worked so very hard to find host families and provide a great meal, and the congregation for their wann hospitality.

It is always very special for me to perform for a congregation we have never visited before. It is also good for my students to view firsthand the life of the congregation as they extend the hand of fellowship to strangers like us. Performing that Thursday evening was rewarding for me because I am very proud of those kids and the music they are able to create without the music major most institutions enjoy, a dynamic I know you can appreciate. The maturing process which transforms the choir during concert tours is a source of great satisfaction to me personally. Beyond the music, however, I treasure lasting memories, renewing old friendships and the many friendships newly established.

With each new church on tour that we visited, the choir continued to grow musically and personally. Our home concert following tour on Sunday, March 16th was a huge success and we are two weeks away from our spring concert. Your kindness made a huge difference in the lives of the Thiel Choir and you helped to create a once-in-alifetime experience.

I look forward to renewing our friendship in the near future. Please accept my heartfelt thanks. May God bless and keep you till we meet again.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael R. ay, cha·;..=~~

Summer 2014 Vacation Bible School: Agency D3 Discover. Decide. Defend

St. John's, together with Grace United Methodist and Immanuel United Church of Christ, is excited to announce our plans for Vacation Bible School this summer. Scheduled for July 13 - 17 from 6:30pm - 8:30pm at Immanuel (105 S 7th Street), the VBS theme this year is Agency D3: Discover. Decide. Defend, where children (ages preschool - 6th grade) will leam more about Jesus. "Agency 03 is an organization comprised of highly skilled operatives -the best of the best - dedicated to discovering, deciding and defending the truth of Jesus. Cadets will be trained to answer the most important question, 'Who is Jesus?' They'll use evidence kits to follow eyewitness reports, physical proof and biblical accounts to collect and log evidence about Jesus." It will be a fun week that we hope many of you will be able to attend!
