A Reflection As summer is making its entrance it is good to take some time to reflect on all the activities that
have taken place at St. John‘s. It has brought excitement and an unbelievable joy to my heart to see
how members from every possible demographic at St. John‘s have gotten involved in all the different
ministries and events that were launched or are in the planning stage. It is an answer to Christ‘s prayer
in John 17:20-21: My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me
through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May
they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. St. John‘s is a congregation
that is centered in the message of cross, and because of that people from all different walks of life and
worship preferences come together to bring hope and healing to everyone we are called to minister to.
It is amazing to see everyone at St. John‘s moving forward into the same direction. From my
perspective, the Rachel Scott event from May 1 was the clearest expression of this. Members from all
age-groups or backgrounds came and brought friends along. It was not an event of one group of the
congregation, but of St. John‘s! From young teenagers to advanced seniors - all came, enjoyed the
evening and glorified God!
Christ has called us to speak openly about our faith. But in the experience of many believers, that is
one of the most terrifying aspects of being a follower of Christ. To see five of our member on May 1
come up front and speak to a packed sanctuary about how they experienced God in the different
challenges of their lives was nothing short of incredible. It is my prayer for St. John‘s that we become
comfortable speaking about our faith whenever there is an opportunity. It is wonderful to see how the
ministries Christ is leading us to start provide opportunities for members to share their faith in dealing
with the specific challenges of life: Financial peace, being a young mother, divorce, exercise, etc.
It has become obvious that St. John‘s has realized that reaching out and praying about new ministries
is not about ―growing numbers‖ or ―feeding our ego‖. It is about being faithful to what Christ has
called us to do: To go to all nations and to make disciples wherever we go. If Christ has called us to do
this, he expects that we pour our heart, our soul, our time, our resources and our skills into it. And we
do! And so St. John‘s has begun to establish a reputation not through marketing tricks, but through
genuine expressions of faith that we can be proud about: This is the most welcoming and caring
church I have ever seen. This is not my opinion, but the voices of guests and visitors. Just the other
day I had the chance to visit with some first-time visitors. They made sure to emphasize what a friend-
ly, welcoming and friendly congregation St. John‘s is. This has already become the standard line
whenever I visit with new folks: Wow – what a welcoming and friendly congregation St. John‘s is! St.
John‘s is this because of you!
Where do we go from here? It would be pretentious to assume we know what the future brings. But
what we can say with a degree of certainty is that St. John‘s will continue to focus and to be centered
in the message of cross. St. John‘s will continue to operate based on the realization that our biggest
assets are the people of St. John‘s. Therefore we will continue to seek to involve everyone in all the
different ministries we are doing. St. John‘s will continue to take to heart the invitation of our Lord to
reach out and to make disciples wherever we go. These are more than clichés – these convictions form
the foundation of everything we are and will be doing. Wherever that is going to take us – Christ
knows. And because it is Christ who is in charge and who is leading we can be assured that He will
lead St. John‘s and us as individual believers into a land where milk and honey flows. A land of
blessing and healing! It is exciting to be on this journey! It is a joy to be on this journey together with
you!

Thank you to all the Kingdom Quest families for allowing us to teach your beautiful children about
God and his word. We also couldn‘t do our program without the volunteers that show up each week
and help us out. We do appreciate each and every one of you. We ended our Sunday School year by
having the S.T.A.G.E.D. Puppet team from West Hills Church perform a show for us on May 1st. It
showed us how we need to ―Depend On God‖ every day. Enjoy your summer and we will see you
next September!

Outreach Ministries
SJLC Outreach Ministry continues to reach out to the community through the Health by Design
program. Forty people participate in a series of fitness classes each week. We had a series of fitness
testing over the past month, in which several people lost over five pounds, inches and decreased the
cholesterol. Fitness class schedules will begin a new session in late June. If you are interested in
exercise and a healthy lifestyle planning, contact [email protected].
We have started a running/walking club for SJLC and the Bennington community called ―Faithful
Soles‖. Runs/walks occur every Saturday morning at 7:00 AM. Please join us in the west parking lot
of SJLC, if you are interested. Thank you to Heather Roth and Cindy Giebelhausen for leading the

June 2011 Youth Newsletter Report
May has been a whirlwind month with all that was going on at St John‘s. The month started off with
our May 1st Rachel Scott event, continued with a great celebration with our graduates on May 15th,
and then we added in there the end of the school year and Memorial Day weekend. Throughout all
these events we continued our weekly meetings with the Senior High youth, and we ended the
confirmation year with a family fun night with food and some ―minute to win‖ it games.
Working with the students here at St John‘s has been amazing. The students here are full of life and
are passionate about the future. I am so excited to see what God has in store for us and the youth
ministry program.
This summer we will continue to meet with both the Jr High and Sr High youth. We will be doing
Bible studies, activities, trips, and spend the summer building relationships to encourage our faith in
Christ. Please watch the Sunday bulletins and your mail for details on the activities we will be doing
this summer. This should be a summer to remember.
We are also preparing for ministry next fall. We are planning confirmation, as well as a new Jr High
ministry program. The Sr High ministry is planning some exciting things as well. Please keep all our
students in your prayers along with all the adults who work with them.
One last note, if you have felt God calling you to work with our youth program in any way, please
give me a call. Please pray what God has planned for you, because I want you to use the gifts you
have been given. I look forward to hearing from you.
God Bless,

―Many are the plans in a man‘s heart, but it is
the Lord‘s purpose that prevails.‖ Proverbs
19:21 (NIV)
Have you noticed the things don‘t always turn
out the way you want them to? That sometimes
God has a better idea? It‘s okay to make your
plans, but remember that life is unpredictable
and God says we shouldn‘t presume on it. On
the other hand, we shouldn‘t worry about it
because God is in control.
James 4 tells us the proper attitude to have:
―Now listen you who say ‗Today or tomorrow
we will go to this or that city, spend a year
there, carry on business, and make money,
‗Why, you don‘t even know what will happen
tomorrow….. Instead, you ought to say, ‗if it is
the Lord‘s will, we will live and do this or
that.‖‖(vs. 13-15, NIV). James is saying it‘s
OK to make plans, but just realize that
ultimately God has the final word.
The right attitude is to always keep your plans
submitted to God. Make your plans but say,
―God, if this is what You want, this is the
direction I‘m going to go. I‘m doing this with
flexible faith.‖ Then when interruptions come,
you‘ll remember God is in control. It will
dramatically lower the frustration level in your
life as you remember it is not all up to you.

FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY
THRU THE W INDOWS P AGE 9
Financial Peace University (FPU) will empower you to handle money according to biblical principles. Over a million families have
enrolled in FPU and the average family eliminates $5,300 in debt and saves $2,700 during the 13 week class.
So, what is the goal of Financial Peace?!? Incredible things happen when you learn to manage your money according to scripture.
FPU will reach you to live like no one else, so later you get to live like no one else. What does that really mean? Does it mean we
want you to earn and have lots of money, so you get really wealthy and can buy whatever you want for the rest of your life? Of
course not.
There is nothing wrong with having money. There are a lot of people who have the idea that rich people are somehow evil. This
is simply not true! You see, money is amoral. It doesn‘t have any guiding principles on its own. Having money or not does not have
to change you. If you are a generous person and you become wealthy, you may become a generous, wealthy person. It is all about
whose hands the money is in.
So there is nothing wrong with having money. But as Dave Ramsey says, ―If you eat enough lobster, even it will start to taste like
soap.‖ Having stuff will never satisfy you. That is why the ultimate goal of taking control of your money is not about building
wealth for wealth‘s sake.
There are a lot of incredible things that happen when you learn to manage your money instead of letting it manage you. Here are
some ways families have experienced financial peace:
Financial peace strengthens relationships.
You may not realize how much your relationship with money affects your relationships with others. FPU will teach you how to get
on the same page as your spouse and eliminate money fights for good. Getting rid of this source of conflict is life changing!
Financial peace brings a sense of hope and freedom.
When you find out where your money is going instead of wondering where it went, it is amazing how much less stress you
experience in life. Not only are you not worrying about bills, but you have a plan for the future. This brings about a sense of
confidence and hope, and freedom!
Financial peace changes your family tree.
What kind of legacy do you want to leave for your family? You may not leave millions behind someday, but it is important to de-
cide what type of legacy you want to create. Let generations come to benefit from the wisdom you chose to live by. That‘s chang-
ing your family tree!
Financial peace allows you the freedom to give generously.
If you have ever experienced what it is like to freely give to someone else, then you have tasted the joy of giving. There is nothing
more fun and fulfilling to do with money than this! When you have debt payments out the wazoo, it is hard to feel like you can
give. It robs you of your opportunity to give from your God-given desire to help others and to meet the needs you feel most
passionate about. When you get in control of your money, you are able to meet needs with joy instead of guilt.
Experience life to the fullest and discover a sense of peace and freedom that reaches beyond your wallet.
Please join us Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm beginning June 1. Register online at www.davermsey.com/fpu, or at church by singing up on the sheet outside the sanctuary, or by calling the church
office. The first class is free. If you wish to continue then we ask for a donation to cover the cost of the materials, which is $100
total per family or $7.70 per week. Financial assistance available if needed.
