Isaiah 9:1-4

There will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;

those who lived in a land of deep darkness-- on them light has shined.

You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy;

they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder.

For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.

Psalm 27:1, 5-13 Dominus illuminatio BCP-617

(Anglican Chant Sung by the Choir) Lionel Dakers

1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear? * the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid?

5 One thing have I asked of the LORD; one thing I seek; * that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life;

6 To behold the fair beauty of the LORD * and to seek him in his temple.

7 For in the day of trouble he shall keep me safe in his shelter; * he shall hide me in the secrecy of his dwelling and set me high upon a rock.

8 Even now he lifts up my head * above my enemies round about me.

9 Therefore I will offer in his dwelling an oblation with sounds of great gladness; * I will sing and make music to the LORD.

10 Hearken to my voice, O LORD, when I call; * have mercy on me and answer me.

11 You speak in my heart and say, "Seek my face." * Your face, LORD, will I seek.

12 Hide not your face from me, * nor turn away your servant in displeasure.

13 You have been my helper; cast me not away; * do not forsake me, O God of my salvation.

1 Corinthians 1:10-18

Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers

5

and sisters. What I mean is that each of you says, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power.

For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Gradual Hymn “They Cast Their Nets in Galilee” H-661

Georgetown

The Gospel (please stand) Matthew 4:12-23

When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

“Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—

the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light,

and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.”

From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.

6

Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.

Bishop’s Litany for the Nation Almighty God our heavenly Father, guide the nations of the world into the way of justice and truth, and establish among them that peace which is the fruit of righteousness, that they may become the kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. O Lord, our Governor, bless the leaders of our land, that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the earth. Lord, keep this nation under your care. To the President and members of the Cabinet, to Governors of States, Mayors of Cities, and to all administrative authority, grant wisdom and grace in the exercise of their duties. Give grace to your servants O Lord. To Senators and Representatives, and those who make our laws in States, Cities, and Towns, give courage, wisdom, and foresight to provide for the needs of all our people, and to fulfill our obligations in the community of nations. Give grace to your servants, O Lord. And finally, teach our people to rely on your strength and to accept their responsibilities to their fellow citizens, that they may elect trustworthy leaders and make wise decisions for the well-being of our society; that we may serve you faithfully in our generation and honor your holy Name. For yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. O God, you have bound us together in a common life. Help us, in the midst of our struggles for justice and truth, to confront one another without hatred or bitterness, and to work together with mutual forbearance and respect, through Jesus Christ our Lord. THE HOLY COMMUNION

Anthem He Comes to Us Jane Marshall He comes to us as one unknown, without a name, as of old by the lakeside He came. He came to those men who knew him not. He speaks to us; He speaks the same words, “Follow! Follow thou Me,” and sets us to the tasks which He has to fulfill for our time. He commands. And to those who obey Him, whether they be wise or simple, He will reveal Himself in the toils, the conflicts, the sufferings which they shall pass through in His fellowship, and as an ineffable mystery, they shall learn in their own experience who He is..

O Morning Star, how fair and bright Thou beamest forth in truth and light! O Sovreign meek and lowly! Thou root of Jesse, David’s Son, My Lord and Savior, Thou hast won My heart to serve Thee solely! Thou art holy, fair and glorious, all victorious, Rich in blessing. Rule and might o’er all possessing.

Organ Postlude Prelude and Chorale on “Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern” Hugo Distler

It has long been the custom at St. John’s Church for the congregation to be seated and listen to the Organ Postlude. Please do not feel compelled to do so; but if you prefer to leave immediately after the candles are extinguished, please depart quietly so those who wish to do so may listen prayerfully to the Postlude.

We welcome Father David Laquintano back today. Father David is a retired priest of the Diocese of New Jersey. He was last rector in Ocean City, NJ. He and his wife, Christine, live in Swarthmore, PA. 8:00 a.m. Today’s flowers at the Chapel Altar are offered by the Laning, Peterson, and Runkle families in thanksgiving for Matthew Wayne Runkle’s 2nd birthday and his great grand Pop, Joe Peterson Sr.’s 82nd birthday on January 23, and they are also offered for Ella Mae Peterson and JoAnn Dougan. 10:30 a.m. The Altar flowers today are given by DeeAnn Harris and Susan Burt in loving remembrance of their parents, John and Dorothy Mangan, and their grandparents, Norman and Pearl Sharp.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Music in today’s liturgy: Today is the Third Sunday after the Epiphany. As always at St. John’s, all of the music, hymns, anthems, organ music, reflect or amplify the themes found in the lessons and prayers for this day. The Organ Prelude is a Partita (set of variations) based on the great Epiphany hymn, “O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright”. The setting is by Jan Bender (1909-1994), a Dutch-German organist (St. Michael, Luneburg), and composer, who was imprisoned for a short time in a Nazi concentration camp for his association with the Confessing Church. He emigrated to the USA in 1960, and taught at Concordia College, Minnesota. The choir will sing Psalm 27:1, 5-13 in an Anglican Chant setting by Lionel Dakers (1924-2003), an English organist (Ripon & Exeter Cathedrals) and teacher (Royal School of Church Music). The Choir’s Offering Anthem, He Comes to Us, is a setting of the Epilogue of Albert Schweitzer’s book, The Quest of the Historical Jesus, by Jane Marshall (b.1924), a longtime member of the Sacred Music graduate faculty at Perkins School of Theology, SMU. The anthem concludes with a verse of the Epiphany hymn “O Morning Star”. The Organ Postlude is based on that same Epiphany Chorale (as is the Organ Prelude). The setting is by Hugo Distler (1908-1942), a German organist (St. Jacobi, Lübeck), choral conductor, teacher (Spandau School of Church Music), and composer. Though he was forced to join the Nazi party in order to remain employed, he was depressed due to conflicts of conscience, and committed suicide rather than serve in the Nazi army. Food Pantry: The Food Pantry distribution day is now only on Tuesday from noon to 2:00 p.m. This decision was made after some careful research which noted that there are a number of other pantry sites within Salem City which cover all the days of the week with the exception of Tuesday. There are copies of the distribution sites on the hall counter in the Parish House. Please note that we continue to need volunteers and contributions. This week we served 58 people. January’s calendar is posted for volunteers to sign up. 1/3 Bill and Peg, 1/10 Aud, 1/17 Sue, 1/24 Rich and Bonnie, 1/31 Open. Please help if you are able. DONATIONS REQUESTED: We are collecting hats, gloves, and scarves to lay out on the fence on Sunday, February 5, after the 10:30 a.m. service. Please bring any items to church or to the office throughout the weeks before the 5th.
