Madeline Island Blood Drive
By Becky Hogan
Wednesday, July 22, 11 am - 5 pm
La Pointe School
Donating blood is essential to community health and the
need for blood is constant. The Red Cross urgently
needs blood drives to run as planned. Healthy
individuals are encouraged to book an appointment. At
each blood drive, the Red Cross follows the highest
standards of safety
and infection control,
plus additional
precautions are being
implemented as well.
Volunteer donors are
the only source of
blood for those in need.
There is no known end date in this fight against
coronavirus and the Red Cross needs the help of blood
donors to maintain a sufficient blood supply for weeks to
come. In times of crisis, the Red Cross is fortunate to
witness the best of humanity as people roll up a sleeve to
help those in need.
Call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or
visit redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment.
We greatly
appreciate the
generosity of the
public to keep
hospital shelves
stocked during
these uncertain
times.
If you are available
to volunteer to help
out with the blood
drive, please call
Becky Hogan at
218-310-6092.
Reflections from Rachel and Debbie
Dear friends,
As people of faith, we are
hearing and responding to the
call for racial justice in our
country and in our world. St.
John’s has a long history of
standing in solidarity with the
native peoples of this place
which we all love, and of
participating in activities for
social justice. We have
recently witnessed this to be
particularly true in the
extensive activities at St.
John’s to support the resolution of the Wisconsin
Conference of the United Church of Christ to repudiate
the Doctrine of Discovery.
We are fortunate to
be part of a larger
community that
shares our
commitment to racial
justice. Within the
UCC Wisconsin
Conference, that
commitment begins
at the very top, with Conference Minister Franz Rigert
and his colleagues. I invite you to read the letter Franz
shared with the 200+ UCC congregations in Wisconsin
earlier this week. We add our names, as your Pastor and
Council President, to our colleagues in their commitment
to the work of anti-racism and building the Beloved
Community.
We are also fortunate to see the fruits of our work in the
past year. The Alliance for Justice, Inc., was formed
under the leadership of
Larry Littlegeorge (Ho-
Chunk Congregation)
over the past 12 months
as an outgrowth of the
work of the Wisconsin
Conference of the UCC
to repudiate the
Doctrine of Discovery.
Larry Littlegeorge
The mission statement of the Alliance for Justice reads,
in part, “The Alliance will support the efforts of UCC
congregations, especially in Wisconsin, in advocating for
improved conditions for people impacted by injustices
stemming from the Doctrine of Discovery. The Alliance
for Justice will use education and faith to create
community and heal the wounds inflicted by the Doctrine
of Discovery.” Regina Laroche and Joe Scarry were both
involved in getting the Alliance
for Justice up and running and
Joe is serving on the Alliance
Board of Directors. We invite
you to read the most recent
statement from the Alliance,
reproduced on the next page.
Let us prayerfully consider how
we are called, individually and as a congregation, to
commit to join in anti-racism work. We look forward to
being in conversation with you as we continue to move
forward together.
Peace, Rachel and Debbie
Rev Rachel Bauman, Pastor St. John’s
Debbie Knopf, Council President
United Against Racism
St. John’s is joining with Bayfield communities of faith in
co-sponsoring this silent march on Saturday, July 4 at
11:00 am. We are committed to doing this in a safe and
socially-distanced manner and so there are four different
starting locations (see flyer for details). Rev. Rachel will
be leading a prayer at the Coast Guard Park. Please
wear a mask!
Alliance for Justice Promotes Racial Justice
The Alliance for Justice, Inc., is grateful to the leadership
of the Wisconsin Conference of the UCC in calling on all
congregations to work for racial justice.
Wisconsin is home to one of the largest populations of
native people in the United States.
Image above reproduced from interactive map at
https://wisconsinfirstnations.org/map/
“Explore whose treaty lands and which nations are
located closest to your school using this map.
Try turning on the county and city layer to help you
find the correct location.”
As Wisconsin congregations respond to the call of
conference leadership to work for racial justice, we ask
that you include in your work attention to the justice on
behalf of the native people of this place.
We recommend three ways to do this:
● Learn the true history – Refer to
https://wisconsinfirstnations.org and your local library
to begin a project of learning that includes your
entire congregation. In 2019, Wisconsin
congregations voted to repudiate the Doctrine of
Discovery. In 2020, congregations should move from
the general to the specific, understanding how the
Doctrine of Discovery affected people in the places
you now occupy.
● Advocate for civil rights – There are ways your
congregation can support civil rights for native
people, starting today. Familiarize yourself with
some possible areas for advocacy on the Services
and Programs page of the Indian Law Office page of
Wisconsin Judicare:
http://www.judicare.org/Content/ILO-Services-and-
Programs.cfm Dive deeper into the legal background
in Wisconsin on the Wisconsin Bar page on Indian
Law:
https://www.wisbar.org/NewsPublications/Wisconsin
Lawyer/Pages/Article.aspx?Volume=88&Issue=5&Ar
ticleID=24068
● Protect the environment – Support the leadership
of native people in efforts to save this place
according to the traditions and worldview of
Wisconsin’s native people. Groups include:
o Inter-tribal Water Walkers of Wisconsin
https://www.facebook.com/Intertribalwaterwalkers
o Stop Line 3: https://www.stopline3.org/
o Frac Sand Mining:
https://www.fractracker.org/2018/10/living-with-
silica-sand-mines/
o Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission
https://www.glifwc.org/
In the weeks ahead, the Alliance for Justice, Inc., will
reach out to all UCC Wisconsin Conference
congregations to learn more about how you are
undertaking this work, and to determine how we can best
assist you.

Letter to the congregations
and clergy of the
Wisconsin Conference:
"Do not rock the boat."
"Color inside the lines."
"This country has not been good to us."
Pay attention to the "apparitions, phantoms and ghosts"
that lie behind the founding values and principles of this
nation.
These words of challenge along with a call to confession
were shared in this statement from the Alliance for
Justice of the Hocak UCC. They describe the
experiences and the reality of the HoChunk people and
all people of color in our nation. The voices of our
HoChunk siblings join the voices raised all over our
country as the Black Lives Matter
movement gains momentum
following the brutal murder of
George Floyd.
As members of the Wisconsin
Conference pastoral staff, we hear
the voices calling for racial justice and
the dismantling of the racist systems and structures that
keep all of us from living in the Beloved Community
envisioned by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We stand
in solidarity with the Alliance for Justice, the HoChunk
Nation and all people of color. We acknowledge our
complicity in the systems and structures that have
perpetuated injustice in this nation for so long.
In particular, we listened to the Alliance for Justice call for
confession. We confess...
• This country is built on racism.
• Racism is alive and well in this country and not
letting up.
• Demands for justice for people of color will be likely
met with more laws and policies against them.
We ask God's forgiveness and grace as we commit to
these actions in response to this confession:
1. To do anti-racism work as a staff
2. To embrace anti-racist practices within our work to
the best of our ability
3. To educate ourselves about the impacts and
effects of racism and white privilege on us, our
work and within the structures, programs and
policies of our conference
Most of all, we commit to listening to our siblings of color.
We decided to share our commitments publicly with you
as pastors, leaders, and friends of the conference
because we hear God speaking through the movements
for racial justice. Can you listen with us? Can you make
a commitment to join in anti-racism work?
We acknowledge that we are
not experts. We admit that we
all have work to do and we
pledge that as a staff we are
committed to walking with
people who are in the
movement for justice and peace
both within and beyond the
church. We will stand with every person in the Wisconsin
Conference who is walking on the path toward justice and
peace and we will raise our voices and not be silent.
Just as Jesus overturned the tables in the temple, we
heard the call to overturn the tables of white privilege and
racism. We need to upturn systems and structures that
divide us from one another and cause harm to our
beloveds.
We are calling congregations and pastors to join us in
doing this much needed hard work. We as a staff are
here to support you, challenge you and encourage you in
this work. We are all implicated in the pain and suffering
of our world. We are called together to see this, to
respond to it and to heal it.
In addition to the commitment we have made to each
other, as staff, to understand our own implicit racial
biases, we are convening a conversation with the racial
justice task force as an umbrella group for various
working groups (e.g.
the immigration
working group) and
will be paying
attention to the
recommendations
that emerge from
this group.
We understand the work before us will be long and
painstaking. Together we will work to create the space
where mutual understanding and healing can begin and
the hope for the Beloved Community can be ushered in.
In his recent sermon "When Is Someday?" the Rev. Otis
Moss III focused on the words from the spiritual, "We
shall overcome someday." He asked, "When is
someday?" More than once in the march for racial justice
people of faith have responded, "Someday must be
now!" We join our voices with so many others who feel
the urgency of the moment, proclaiming again: Someday
must be now!

St. John’s to Discuss “Stamped From the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America”
As we protest and mourn the murder of George Floyd
and so many other fellow Americans, the opportunity
to learn (and unlearn) calls.
Structural racism, unconscious bias,
police reform, anti-racism and more
are all deeply important issues.
You are invited to join Sarah Ross
Caruso and Rev Rachel Bauman for
the inaugural meeting of the St. John’s Book Club
from 5 - 6pm on Wednesday, July 1.
We will be discussing Stamped From the Beginning:
The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America in
which award-winning historian Ibram X. Kendi
chronicles the entire story of anti-Black racist ideas
and their staggering power over the course of
American history. Zoom link:

Worship theme for June and July:
Unraveled: Seeking God When Our Plans Fall Apart *
“What happens when our world falls apart? How do we
press on when our tightly-knit plans unravel into loose
threads? What do we become when our identity – or the
path we’re on – comes undone? What if all of this is not
the end we fear it will be?”
In our unraveling, sometimes life surprises us with
unexpected joy, love, and hope – with a new beginning
we couldn’t have imagined. Sometimes we need God to
unravel us, for we long to be changed. Join us for online
worship in June and July as we explore stories of where
and how God meets us in the spiraling; unraveling our
plans – and us – into something new.
