From Pastor Mark’s desk: I have to believe that it is because of the events in the world around us, but I have been think- ing a good bit about the idea of insiders and outsiders in the last few weeks. I don’t know if this is motivated by what seems to be becoming a war of race with law enforcement. Maybe it is because of the violent acts of terror that are being committed all around our world, or maybe it is just my reaction to the on-going political debate of another presidential campaign cycle with walls around our borders or around our convention. Whatever the case, it has become painfully obvious to me that we are di- vided in just about everything we do. The sad truth is that this kind of division has been going on forever. We have been battling this problem of insiders and outsiders since the creation. The challenge to us is: Is this the way we are supposed to behave in relationship to others? Are there supposed to be insiders and outsiders? The truth is that we Christians also operate this way. There is a clear distinction for us about who are the insiders and who are the outsiders at church. We do make a distinction about the differ- ence of insiders and outsiders. We talk about salvation and eternal life for the insiders. We talk about all the things that come with having that name, Child of God, given to us at baptism, and that is what gets me to how the church is different from the rest of the world. The world is very interested in keeping the distinctions of insiders and outsiders – that is why the players in the world want to build walls. For us in the church, the goal of life is different. Our challenge, given to us by our Lord, is to make all the world insiders. Yes, there are distinctions, but our mission is to bring everyone in. Jesus said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, bap- tizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20, NRSV). So, obviously, the question is how do we accomplish this challenge. I think the theme of Amazing Grace Day Camp for this year can help us. The theme verse is, “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us.” (Ephesians 5:1-2b, NRSV) I believe that it is really about following the example of our Lord in this world and how he went about his work. We are challenged to keep inviting people to come see what God has done and is doing for us. We are challenged to live our lives as Jesus did, taking care of the people we encounter in the world who are in need. Our goal, is to make the whole world into insiders as they experience the love of Christ in their lives. I know that it is a monumental job. I also know that we will not succeed in making the whole world into insiders, but that is not our worry. Our job is to do the inviting. Our job is to show who we are as God’s children by how we live in this world. The good part for us is that if we take care of what we are supposed to do, then God takes care of the rest. Amazing Grace Day Camp 2016
Join us on Sunday, August 21, at the YMCA facilities at 1861 Adams Lane for our annual church picnic. (NOTE NEW LOCATION!) We will worship at 10:30, followed by a potluck lunch. There will be games, Bingo, fun and fellowship for young and old. (Please note the pool will be closed by then, so no swimming.) Bring your favorite dish to share at the potluck. Table service including plates, plastic ware, napkins and cups will be provided. Drinks (water and lemonade) will also be provided. If you bring a cold dish you will need to provide a way to keep it cold (no refrigeration). You should also plan to bring your own serving spoon/fork/spatula. We are planning on having 35-40 prizes offered for Bingo winners. If you would like to contribute a prize or two, please leave items in the box on the stage at St. John's. You could also bring your donation the day of the picnic. Prizes might include such items as puzzles, mugs, paper pads, markers, coloring books, crayons, folders, bubbles, candy, nuts, etc. Directions to the YMCA Facilities at 1861 Adams Lane (based upon leaving St. John's parking lot) are: *Turn south on 7th St. to Market St. *Turn right onto Market St. *Turn right onto 6th St. *Turn left onto the I-70W ramp *Take exit 153-B onto Maple Ave. *Turn left at the intersection of Maple Ave and Adair Ave/Ohio 146 (first traffic light) *Turn right onto Adams Lane *YMCA Facilities are on the left-hand side of the street, approximately 0.5 mile from intersection. We have rented the Little Barn for our picnic. The facilities and park are a non-smoking environment. Vehicles must remain on roads or in designated parking areas--no parking/driving on the grass.

Four 70 sheet notebooks (2850-300 sheets total) of wide or college ruled paper approx. 8”x101/2”; no loose leaf paper
One 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other
One pencil sharpener
One pair of blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well)
Five unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rub-ber band
Five black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink); secure together with a rubber band
One boxy of 16 or 24 crayons
One 2 1/2” eraser
One sturdy drawstring backpack-style cloth bag approximately 14x17” with shoulder straps (no standard backpacks); recommended fabrics include cotton, canvas, denim, and twill.

Vacation Bible school 2016
Christmas in August!
You have probably already seen the Christmas tree outside the chapel and been reminded that it’s that time of year again! We are once again giving you plenty of time to shop for Operation Christmas Child, a project run through Samaritan’s Purse! On the tree you will find suggestions of gifts for boys and girls. Take a list off the tree and after you have done your shopping, bring your donations back and put them under the tree. Monetary donations are also welcome! We’ll use that money to pay the $7.00 shipping and handling fee that is requested for each box. Last year we were able to assemble, with your donations, 56 boxes that were sent in November to Samaritan’s Purse!
Maybe you would like to assemble your own box? It’s very easy and makes a great family project. If you would like to do that, we will have Operation Christmas Child boxes under the tree for you to take. Decide on whether or not you would like to shop for a boy or girl and then which age: 2-4 yrs., 5-9 yrs. or 10 – 14 yrs. From there use our suggested gift list or come up with some ideas of your own! We also have an excellent DVD that you can borrow and watch that will show you how to pack a box – we’ll gladly share it with you!

GOOD SAMARITAN PANTRY
A few weeks ago, two people stopped at the church during worship
services in need of help. Pastor was on vacation and no one really
knew how to handle the situation. We thought it might be a good idea
to start a mini food bank for instances like this. Then, when someone
in need stops in on Sunday morning looking for help, and Christ’s Table and Eastside Ministries are
not open, we could at least give the person a bag of groceries to get them through for a day or two.
If you would like to help with this new ministry opportunity, please bring non-perishable food items
that we could keep in a cupboard in the kitchen. We will mark a couple of cupboards that say “Good
Samaritan Pantry, “and you can simply place your items in the cupboards. Bread could even be kept
in the freezer. If you would prefer to make a monetary donation, please mark for “Good Samaritan
Pantry” on your envelope, and we will be happy to purchase items for you. Once we get this going, if
someone approaches you on a Sunday morning needing help, you can simply go to the kitchen,
grab a paper sack out of the cupboard, and fill it with groceries. Please let us know if you have any
questions or would like to help.
