1 St. John’s Lutheran Church June 2011 Church Bell From Pastor Disney How would you feel if we just skipped summer and went from whatever that was that we called spring and dived right into fall? You would probably feel like someone yanked out a part of your soul, right? As far as I know summer has not been canceled. It may have been shortened due to budget short- falls but there should still be plenty of sweat and bugs so that we all get our fill. Unfortunately, when it comes to our spiri- tual life, it seems that many people look at the calen- dar and just cross off summer. In the church year, the season of summer is called Pentecost. It is the season where we are supposed to grow just like na- ture does during summer. If you miss the season of Pentecost you might be missing the warmth and light of the Holy Spirit. During Pentecost our scripture lessons are filled with the parables and stories of Je- sus. We sit at His feet and let His words wash over us. Tiny miracles happen in our souls, each of them building the strong roots that can anchor us through a long winter. The church year was designed to be a kind of comprehensive course covering the whole counsel of God’s wisdom and instruction. In school nobody can say they have learned a subject fully if they have missed a fourth of the classes. I think that some of the best parts of our explora- tion of God’s Word and wisdom come to us during the summer months. I think someone smart once said there are basically two questions worth asking: Who am I, and, Who is Jesus? We spend a large part of the church year working on understanding who Jesus is. The journey starts in late fall in the season of Ad- vent as we consider the One who was promised to come. The Gift of Summer (Continued on page 3)

Then at Christmas we considerthe great mystery of His humblebirth. We consider this mysteryunveiled and revealed in theseason of Epiphany. The moodshifts as we begin the walk withJesus to the cross and to Hissacrifice to pay for our sin. Then, of course, the crowningday of the church year comes atEaster. Jesus’ Resurrectionopens the floodgate of clarity.Jesus is the triumphant Son ofGod.

After we celebrate Jesus’ ascen-sion into heaven, the season ofPentecost comes in with abang. God sends the Holy Spiritupon us and it is time for us toturn to our other question: Whoam I? The Spirit first whispersthe answer given to us in bap-tism; you are a child of God.From there the question getsmore complicated as the smallchoices we make each day cre-ate the answer.

Life can mean absolutely noth-ing if you let it, but if you sochoose it can be filled and over-flowing with profound purpose.God lets us choose. That is atonce the most liberating andfrightening news we can re-ceive. The trouble is that we arebroken. As Genesis says, “Everyinclination of man’s heart isevil.” As Paul said in 1st Corin-thians, without the spirit of Godwe can end up being very fool-ish. As Jesus said, once a treehas gone bad it is only going toproduce bad fruit.

Summer is a great time to workin the garden and make thingsgrow. It is also a great time towork on ourselves. The light ofthe Holy Spirit can transformus. It is time to get outside andenjoy the sun. It is also time tosavor the gift of growing in thelight of our living God. I hopeyou will enjoy both this summer.

Over 100 children depend on you to experi-ence VBS! There are many ways you canmake the adventure happen for the kids. You could donate supplies, help with regis-tration, teach, be a crew leader and more!

Here are some ideas of what your role could be:

Be a…Crew Leader: Through out the week kids travel insmall groups to stations with their crews and leader. Crewleaders are not Teachers! They’re simply part of the Crewfamily. They participate in all the activities and encouragekids to talk about and apply what they are learning. Lovekids, but hate to teach! This is the place for you.

Be a…Station Leader: Instead of leading independent, iso-lated classes, Station Leaders see all the kids each day. There are seven different stations and kids will visit eachone everyday. Each station features a different Bible learn-ing activity to meet the needs of different kinds of learners. Some of the stations are: Crazy Crafts and Missions, Chad-der’s Movie Mania, Treetop Treats, Bambo Blast Games, andWild Bible Adventures. Leaders will be in pairs for each sta-tion.

Donate Supplies: Beginning the end of June through Julypick up tags in the Narthex for the snacks and supplies weneed for VBS.

Call to Order: Stan MeyerOpening Prayer: Pastor DisneyAgenda Reviewed, approved.New Business: Pastor Call Process – StanMeyer spoke on the fact Pastor Bode hadreceived a call and left St. John’s. The Boarddecided to have the President of the SouthDistrict Lane Seitz join us to discuss what ourneeds might be for future decisions. Wemade the decision to send out a survey toeach and every congregational member sothat we can get some input as to what yourvision, your needs are for the future. So,when the decision is made it might be that wewill need leaders in other areas such as aDirector of Christian Outreach, a Director ofMusic, Director of Education etc. There aremany different people out there and manyways to get the job done. We want to makesure we do the right thing. We will need alittle time to do this, get the survey done, anddigest the input and then you will be hearingmuch more on this later.Pastor Report: Pastor Disney commentedthat his numbers had changed already fromthe written report with Baptisms at 14 andFunerals at 5. Attendance has gone up to anaverage of 383 through Palm Sunday fromthe last half of 2010 which was 355 so wemay be looking at the average attendancerising again. Saturday night has not seen amuch appreciable change even with shiftingthe time to 5:00 P.M. with an average some-where in the 40s. He still does not haveenough people to form a Contemporary MusicBand. So if you know anyone who maybeplays guitar, drums or any musical instrumentit doesn’t matter what age, anyone who wouldlike to play in this band please contact Pas-tor. The question was asked, how doe’s Pas-tor Disney feel about the call situation. Hefeels that the model of a Pastor leader with alot of generalists is a good model and hasseen this as a working situation where thechurches are really growing. He would love tosee us grow and have some dreams cometrue and is at the point where he would do

whatever it takes to get this done. The Ascen-sion service will be held on the following Sunday(June 5).Youth & Family Ministry Board – Education: Kelly Thole said the kids are getting ready forthe trip to Middletown, Ohio.
